Seeking Recommendations Looking for wide-brimmed hat for overseas fall/winter travel

I'm looking for a wide-brimmed hat for sun/rain/snow protection that I can wear as part of my Europe/Japan fall/winter onebag capsule wardrobe. I know wide-brimmed hats aren't commonly worn in cities but I'd still like something that blends in somewhat. I would appreciate recommendations.

Options I've considered:

  • Outback Trading Kodiak. The last time I was in Japan in the summer I wore the mesh-crowned version every day. I liked the practicality of the oilskin and wide brim but it looks like I'm going on a safari.
  • Conner Hats Northern Front. The oilskin and brim are features I like. the shape looks slightly less safari to my eyes.
  • Filson Tin Cloth Brush Hat. Slightly less structured than the Conner but more than a Tilley. Not my favorite and only available in green.

Options I'm not keen on:

  • Wool hats. Don't hold up well to moisture even when sprayed with waterproofing spray.
  • Baseball caps. I have a plain black waterproof one but baseball caps in general aren't my thing.
  • Bucket hats/boonie hats/Tilley hats. Not a fan of the lack of structure.

For style context, here is the core of my cool weather capsule wardrobe. It's not the most fashionable but I'm a solo traveler who values practicality.

  • Plain black jacket
  • Button-down shirts in navy blue, burgundy, and dark green
  • Gray chinos
  • Black trail running sneakers

The outfit consists of bucket hats, Skechers sneakers, Lululemon zip jackets, Dockers chinos, and aloa shirts

That's not far off from what I'm wearing. I like that the hat crown and brim are more structured. I'd prefer a wider brim though as the goal is protection from the elements.

You have your halloween costume as well then.  You just need a scope to carry around with you.

Check out the Australian brand Kooringal. They have a ton of structured (and unstructured) hats designed for travel.

  • Tilley T5: wide brim dun and general purpose. In Santa Fe today.
  • Merino beanie: compact cold weather and rain under a hood
  • Sunday Afternoons Sun Guide cap: folding bill cap with removable sun cape
  • REI Elements cap: waterproof breathable ball cap for rain under a hood to keep the rain off my glasses.

I found the Tilley TWC7 which is a waxed cotton variant of the T5. Looks promising. I'm an REI member so I'll have to stop in next time I go by my local store to see what sun/rain hats they have.

Check out the Tilley Air-Flow Chapeau

Since this is going to be a fall/winter hat, I'm not looking for airflow. The Chapeau doesn't seem to be available in the USA where I am.

I really like the duluth crusher hats. wide brim, comes in ALL head sizes, and well ventilated + great for summer (I know you said for winter/fall travel). sturdy brim holds up pretty well in wind

Looks similar to my mesh Outback Kodiak. I see that they have a felt one for cooler weather but I don't think it would have the water-resistance I'm looking for even if sprayed with waterproofing spray. Duluth makes good stuff though.

I would suggest limiting your search to crushable hats, it will give you greater flexibility on days you don't wish to wear your hat. Outback has some crushables similar to they style you like.

did you look at Tilley too?

You are not "blending in" in a wide brim hat.

I know, which is why I'm asking for recommendations for ones that pass for not looking like I just came from a safari. Something with a little more brim than a fedora but less than a cowboy hat. I'm a white guy with a long beard so I'm going to be a little out of place anywhere.

Seeking bag/backpack recommendations?

Bag requests must be made in the pinned weekly Bag Finder Megathread.
