MY FAILED MICROSOFT SUPPORT QUESTION One drive duplicate files with computer / laptop / pc name

One drive duplicate files with computer / laptop / pc name

I have onedrive account and I don't sync it with any folder like dekstop or documents, its purely a cloud based solution system of folders.

Only 1 laptop is using this onedrive, it is not connected to any other pc

However, when I drag/create files, it works BUT after restarting laptop I see onedrive is going crazy with duplicating video files and attatching my laptop name at the end.

Example:

Video1.mp4 (Original)
Video1-Laptop1.mp4 (Onedrive created, I want this DELETED, and I don't want these ever created)

Why do these get created? How to stop them from spawning? Why does noone else have my issue? It has happened many times in the past and I'm forced to delete them one by one which is anoyying af.

The filename-machinename convention is used by OneDrive when two machines have different versions of the same file. Obviously there is no reason for that to happen if you only have one machine. I wonder though, are Video1.mp4 and Video1-Laptop1.mp4 different in any way? Do they have the same file size? If possible, try to compute their MD5 hashes.

If they are different then you need to consider that you might have a process running that is modifying them. If they are the same then I have no answer as to why OneDrive is doing that.

they are the same in both size and custom meta data(I added stuff with fmpeg like media created and date modified), and I'll try to compte their MD5 hashes.

I use it as intended what do u mean? I just don't sync it with pictures documents or desktop. That shouldn't have caused any problems

Do you have the OneDrive app on an iPhone? I wasn't having duplicates on my PC, but on the iPhone app. Turned out that iCloud was trying to backup the OneDrive files. I turned that off in settings and it resolved. The OneDrive syncing on my PC also smoothed out.

This has been an issue for years. At one time, I spent some time every few months searching my entire OneDrive folder for that device name ending in file names to clear them out. I don't think I ever found an actual solution, but it hasn't been a problem for a while for me. I just checked and I currently have none of these files, but I know it is a real pain. If you don't have too many, and have a good connection, you could try re-syncing, but that can take a really long time.

There are plenty of guides online. It basically makes OneDrive sync everything in the folder again. It can solve some syncing problems, but it can naturally take a long time if there are a lot of files. It is very simple, but if I were to do it, it would take my OneDrive the best part of a week with a high-speed, fibre broadband connection.

I have the same issue from time to time. It’s a pain in the a$$. Since it uses a distinct naming convention you can search and delete when it happens but it’s a chore to say the least. I dug into it once and thought it was a sync issue but not totally sure / convinced

OneDrive started copying my shortcuts onto my desktop and folders, so I finally decided to uninstall it, I am now free from the torture of Microslop
