u/Moony_playzz 18h ago
I'm so fucking tired of it man, I'm a writer, I wanted to publish. Now everyone I know is getting falsely accused left and right of using AI and I don't wanna go through all the sweat and effort to self publish only to get assfucked by a false accusation and blacklisted.

u/HibiscusGrower 17h ago
I'm a professional illustrator and AI is a bane for anyone working in an artistic field. Fuck genAI, from the bottom of my cold, bitter heart.

If it helps I have my Libby and other reading source preferences set to “human only”. It’s small but I am trying to fight back.

I hear this. I’m a musician / songwriter who publishes music on the major streaming platforms. I write it and record it myself - performing all the instruments and vocals in my spare room. My wife played one of my older songs for her friend whose immediate reaction is to say “it sounds like AI…” because I used an arpeggiator on a vocal bridge. It took everything in me not to levitate off the floor with glowing eyes like a supervillain and shout “Bitch, AI sounds like ME!”

I write fanfic and you can pry the em-dashes from my cold dead hands

u/bikeonychus 9h ago
At this rate, I feel like the only way to get around AI accusations, is to handwrite each copy of a book yourself.
I used to be a digital artist and would sell prints of my work on the side. I can't do that anymore since AI. It's not worth it. But at least I can go back into traditional art if I need to (not that it's particularly profitable right now either, everyone is skint). I've been doing a lot of block printing work lately, but it can be expensive to start.
2
u/Moony_playzz 9h ago
If only my wrists would allow me :/
2
u/bikeonychus 9h ago
Yeah, that's been an increasing issue for me too. I have hypermobile joints and it's making things very difficult these days.
I find KT tape is more effective than wrist braces. If you haven't tried it, I would recommend it (with the help of a physiotherapist then first time)
-2
u/CreamCapital 12h ago
you don’t want to write because of hypothetically getting accused of using AI?
9
5
u/Moony_playzz 10h ago
Nothing will ever stop me from writing, but I'm very afraid to publish
-1
u/CreamCapital 7h ago
sorry like who specifically are you afraid of? genuinely curious here i’ve never heard this concern before
2
u/Moony_playzz 7h ago
So when you self publish, you're totally, utterly alone in the world with zero help with anything, including marketing. I have to be my own publishing company, which costs money and time.
If social media, like bookstagram communities or booktok, falsely accuses me and I can't fight off the accusations, I'm fucked. All the money I've sunk in, likely several thousand dollars including a cover artist, program subscriptions, time making posts, all of this is entirely pointless because nobody wants to read AI novels. You get blacklisted forever from social media and reader communities, it's witch hunting.

30
u/microfishy 19h ago
Y'all have been repeating that line for a year and it still hasn't cured cancer. Because it can't.
Real good at making eight-fingered anime porn though.
-18
u/Lockner01 Nova Scotia 19h ago
Cancer isn't a singular disease. AI has improved prostate cancer surgery exponentially. 25 years ago, if you had to have your prostate removed you were pretty much guaranteed to never be able to get a boner again. Now AI can identify and help surgeons with precision cutting that allows them to leave nerves that control erections-- greatly improving your chances of being able to get a boner without the use of Viagra or other similar drug.
8
u/fbueckert 10h ago
AI has improved prostate cancer surgery exponentially
Prove it. And make SURE it's LLMs, because you are absolutely conflating the midwittery that is LLMs with actual useful technology.
You won't be able to, because it's a deliberate strategy to muddy what AI actually means, so LLMs can tag along with valuable tech and handwave away it's massive problems.
-7
u/Lockner01 Nova Scotia 9h ago
You're welcome to come to my house to do a digital exam
5
u/fbueckert 9h ago
So no proof. Just random ravings.
As expected.
-1
u/Lockner01 Nova Scotia 9h ago
What do you want for proof? Fine you're correct: the health care industry is using zero AI. Your cel phone uses zero AI. Nothing you do uses AI. If that makes you feel better then great. But it means you are in the large sector of people that don't know when they are using AI
4
u/fbueckert 8h ago
There's the constant hypebro claim to ubiquity. Along with the omnipresent "so you participate in society" meme.
So, so tiring, and still utterly false.
-1
4
u/microfishy 9h ago
What do you want for proof?
I dunno, maybe one of the LLM AIs curing prostate cancer? A research paper, or a double-blind study? That's usually how science works.
"Now AI can identify and help surgeons with precision cutting"
Got a source for that besides fishing around in your own ass?
1
u/Lockner01 Nova Scotia 8h ago
So you know nothing about cancer. Got it. I don't understand why people keep going to llms. Does facial recognition AI rely on LLMs?

-3
u/Lockner01 Nova Scotia 18h ago
So you're telling me that multiple doctors have lied to me?
14
u/Moony_playzz 18h ago
Medical doctors don't know shit about computers. Machine Learning Models can be run on a tenth of the computational power of a Large Language Model, probably less than that. ML Model Analytics are what identifies cancers. LLM are the AI that need data centres, they're generative, they're completely fucking different from Analytical ML models.
-4
u/Lockner01 Nova Scotia 18h ago
Yeah doctors are pretty stupid.
10
u/Moony_playzz 18h ago
I didn't say stupid, I said they don't know shit about Machine Learning vs Large Language Models, most people don't know the difference including you. I'm really sorry you had cancer, it fucking sucks, I'm glad the MACHINE LEARNING could help. IT IS NOT THE SAME THING.
-1
u/Lockner01 Nova Scotia 18h ago
Ok. You disagree with multiple doctors I have. If course they aren't stupid. I find it hilarious that you think someone would perform surgery without being educated on the machinery

0
u/Lockner01 Nova Scotia 18h ago
That's pretty much what you said. I never brought up llms.
11
u/Vinen88 Alberta 18h ago
Define misled and misunderstood.
LLMs are relevant to the conversation because we are talking about a datacenter being built for Anthropic Claude LLM. You conflated that datacenter with curing your cancer and I refuted that doctors generally use machine learning for cancer tagging.
Now you are just doubling down because someone said you were wrong and you don't like that.
For the last time, have a good night, I'm glad you kicked cancers ass.
1
u/Lockner01 Nova Scotia 18h ago
I'm not conflating it. People are saying fuck AI without realizing how much they use it every day. AI needs data centre's and as someone who lives in Nova Scotia I've read every article I can on the data center. Anthropic is buying into it but I haven't seen that it's only going to be supporting Claude. It's also like to see data centres in Canada because I think it's a mistake to rely on centers that are located in the USA
→ More replies (0)27
u/jokerTHEIF 20h ago
Purpose built ai for specific tasks such as those used in medicine, do not require hyperscale data centers.
1
-21
u/Lockner01 Nova Scotia 20h ago
The require data centers. You're just talking about scale.
The point is there are tons of people who are claiming they never use AI. They do but they don’t realize it. I’d prefer to not be 100% reliant on centers that are based in the US
13
u/Vinen88 Alberta 18h ago
They do not. ML relies more well defined datasets and training doesn't take that long. It's not injesting every piece of written language to ever exist.

Built by an American company and leased by an American company.
Only good part of this is billions in renewable power (wind) they're also building.
41
u/Xalipu 18h ago
Supposedly building. This company is fishy as fuck, already fumbled a previous “green” energy project here, and owes millions to Newfoundland for another failed project.
5
u/Kyouhen Unofficial House of Commons Columnist 12h ago
Don't forget that the feds just announced they're building a wind farm that, in its first phase, will generate double the amount of power Nova Scotia needs. I'm sure these two announcements are a coincidence.
8
u/Xalipu 11h ago
No, it’s “research, data collection and analysis required to advance offshore wind development and help position Nova Scotia as a global clean energy leader”, and “ licensing up to five gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030”.
No building, but money going to private companies by 2030 who might build. Or sit on it.
7
u/East-Specialist-4847 12h ago
They aren't building any additional power structures. There will be no benefit to a data center

Tim Houston was caught having secret meetings/dinners with Everwind CEO Trent Vichie at his New York home in 2024.
In June 2026 Tim said they're not considering data centres in Nova Scotia saying they were "not a today, not even a tomorrow thing"
Then less than 100 days later (Sept 2026) Tim says he's softened his stance on data centres in NS and that Everwind was considering building one. They wouldn't say what it's for.
Then 24 days after (Oct 16 2026) they announce that they are building a data centre and that it's been leased by Anthropic for TWENTY YEARS.

u/Squawking_Macaw 21h ago
Where's Ukraine when you need them?
I have been thinking about this long and hard and so far I have come up with five purposes for AI.
1) To give wealthy people access to skill, while limiting the ability of the skilled to access wealth.
2) To eliminate artists, since in the capitalist mindset they "contribute nothing" to anyone's bottom line.
3) To make it fundamentally impossible to determine what is true, so that the population is easily controlled. When you can make anyone say anything, the safest course is not to say anything at all.
4) To dumb people down by putting intelligence on a "meter", as Sam Altman says. Smart people are a risk to regimes everywhere, and only the rich are to be "smart".
5) To surveil everyone's every word and action in real time, so that punishment can also occur in real time. Post something about attending a protest? No, you're not attending, because your car won't take you there, and maybe it won't even start for a week or so. Say something against a politician? ZOT! Your bank account is now empty.
If you say "but AI will do so much GOOD", read those five points over again and shut up lest you be mocked relentlessly.

The biggest use is wage suppression and it has been delivering on that.
People who think theyre going to be replaced wont ask for a pay increase. You dont even need to use AI, just need to be thinking about it.
18
u/lor_louis 18h ago
Yup, I make a decent salary in tech, but the fact that my company was able to layoff ~20% of the engineering staff and that, as far as I can tell, we are still about as productive, really puts me at a disadvantage when asking for a raise.
•
u/ExpressTumbleweed195 2h ago
The fact that three different people in our company have redone every service we've been paying a dev team for, for years, being better an fixed more efficiently. Every new tech has fallout of some sort. I'll take my pay raise, the money I'm saving the company, and having to spend less time doing my main job because I automated it.

Healthcare is relying heavily on AI. If you get a colonoscopy it’s AI doing most of the work.
24
u/Vinen88 Alberta 19h ago
That's not an LLM.
-8
u/Lockner01 Nova Scotia 19h ago
Is still AI. AI doesn't mean just chatGPT
25
u/Vinen88 Alberta 18h ago
Let's not call everything AI it conflates the argument. Claude is an LLM. Medical imaging and identification by "AI" in those cases, are done through machine learning models. Not large language model, which this datacenter is for. Claiming that it will help with medical imaging is misleading.
-13
u/Lockner01 Nova Scotia 18h ago
You're disagreeing with my doctors.
16
u/Vinen88 Alberta 18h ago
When did doctors become experts in AI? I fully respect a doctors opinion when they are an expert on the subject matter. I work in the field so would know better.
-1
u/Lockner01 Nova Scotia 18h ago
One example. When I had a colonoscopy I watched the entire thing on the monitor. I saw AI identifying polyps quickly. I asked the surgeon about AI use. He said AI does all the lifting and the data gets fed into the larger data bank.
Similar situation with my robotic prostate surgeries. But sure I guess surgeons use tech they aren't that familiar with.
19
u/Vinen88 Alberta 18h ago
Yeah, you misunderstood him and you are misunderstanding me or just being obtuse at this point.
The data from your operation is tagged and added to the next training set. Each additional, well tagged piece of data helps make the model better. If it is live tagging like that it is running locally. They do not require datacentes. The only compute intensive bit is actual training and that is usually done fairly quickly by nothing no more powerful than a high end gaming desktop. At most a few $10k - $20k GPUs if they are really impatient for whatever reason
Its not hard to look up how machine learning works or computer vision for that matter. Go watch some basic YouTube videos and you will probably be better informed than your doctor. I have been to numerous talks by experts in the field and have read numerous papers on it and have had internships in the field and currently work in an adjacent related field, but sure I'm totally wrong and have no idea what I'm talking about.
11
u/Moony_playzz 18h ago
It's completely different models, Machine Learning vs Large Language Model (the scrapers that make wonky pictures and shitty novels).
Machine Learning is significantly less computationally difficult. All ML is doing is comparing A and B and seeing if they're both potentially the same as X. You can run this on a laptop, it's how NASA identifies star clusters and stuff.
Edit: lol you totally said this oops

That's nice. How long until it decides to kill us instead of helping us?
And even if you think that's nuts -- hell, maybe it is, although I don't see why -- they're replacing human doctors. Human doctors who have invested years and fortunes into their professions. Thousands upon thousands of high end jobs, gone.
And what about judges? Who needs a justice system when AI can scour every law library that ever existed in three quarters of a second? Or maybe the judges could be AI themselves, subject to random hallucinations they'll never breed out of AI -- or worse yet, programmed with a vastly more primitive set of laws, to wit: obey or die.
5
u/Classic_Appa 10h ago
In general, I believe that I agree with you. AI is not inherently bad. What is bad is all these LLMs like Claude, ChatGPT, etc. that cannot provide the scale of benefit comparable to the investment.
The AI that medicine is using is machine learning (ML). These ML models use small, highly curated data sets that an expert in medicine is verifying or validating the data going into the model. They are incredibly useful and specific. As we get more medical data, we can make these medical models able to diagnose or identify more potential problems.
But the ML model for medicine isn't scraping WebMD or the /r/MedicalGore subreddit to be able to identify those polyps. It doesn't require a billion dollar data center to run. If a billion dollars has been spent overall on medical ML models, it has been spread across the world and the majority of that has been for the wages of people validating the data. The data is collected gradually.

In an ideal world we would have had proactive legislation to protect copyright, people's safety, privacy and the environment in place ahead of these investments.
We don't so we have to be pragmatic. Claude and its like already exist so we should at least host them in Canada rather than abroad to keep the possibility of legislation alive.
I work in tech and the lack of Canadian options for infrastructure or products is terrifying. It should be a national strategic concern.
8
u/Commando_Joe 7h ago
Your pragmatism is disconnected from the local lives impacted by the negative fallout on their local infrastructure, environment, quality of life and utilities. Pragmatism is often pretext for 'sacrifice' where the cost is paid by others.

Fucking knew it. When they announced that absurdly large wind farm (absurdly large relative to Nova Scotia's needs, first phase was already going to produce double the amount of power that Nova Scotia currently uses) I knew a data centre was on the way. $10 says these guys aren't going to start building their wind farm until well after the data centre is up and running, leeching off public generation as long as possible.
