Painting My very first painted mini! Around 10 hours of work, what do you gitz think?

I'm very proud of my first mini but I think that I took too long painting that one. I guess that is normal since it's my first one but I'm curious to know how long it would take to someone with experience to get this result. How can I improve to paint quicker?

For the future when you feel confident get a airbrush and you will be able to paint a whole army in minutes

Frustratingly good for a first ork mine looked like shit. 3 things. Get like a dark tan skin tone, and paint the top of his nose tops of his ears, tips of his elbows and Especially the lower lip. It adds a lot for like 2 mins of work. Also tou might consider dry brushing a lighter green on the dark to add some definition. But if you really want to save time Just paint his eyes red. It will save you about an hour of finicking with pupils and almost always looks better. Welcome to the Wagh.

Nice! How did you do that rust on the shoulder?

I used Grim Rust effect paint from the Army Painter, I also used that on the Power Klaw ๐Ÿ™‚

Looks great! Only thing Iโ€™d suggest is over the model in a green wash on the skin and black on the armor, itโ€™ll really bring the details out

Significantly better than my first mini, thats for sure!

I like him. I paint since about half a year and manage to get a boy done in 5-8 hours depending on how difficult his pose is (like a rifle close to his body held with both hands makes it much more complicated than a slugga and choppa)

What I'd recommend is to use washes like agrax earthshade on the leather and a bit of seraphim sephir on the white belt buckle. Also take a nail and put a little silver dot on the rivets. This will take you 20 min at worst and will insanely improve the look.

I hate to say this after you did such an inexplicably good job with the eyes. Orks are depicted in cannon as having red eyes, often with black pupils

Looks good for your first mini! I remember spending around 10 hours painting my first Allarus Custodes Terminator too!

A few tips to improve:

  • Watch miniature painting tutorials on YouTube.
  • Use a wet palette to help thin your paints.
  • Most importantly, invest in at least one good-quality brush.
  • Expand your paint collection and experiment with washes.
  • Learn the basics: basecoating, washing, and highlighting.
  • Keep painting to improve your brush control!

Most importantly, enjoy the process and have fun!

Good luck! Keep it up!

Thanks! These are a lot of good tips! Someone commented that my paint was too thick but I did thinned it down on my wet palette and tested the paint on my skin before application. Should I thin it more?

Edit: I saw your minis and they are incredible! Do you have an IG account I can follow?

One thing you can try after thinning your paint is testing it on your thumbnail first to check the consistency.

Also, two thin coats are better than one thick coat. Let the first coat dry completely. It might not cover everything, but donโ€™t worry! The second coat will give you much better coverage and a smoother finish.

Not bad but maybe paints are abit thick

Sounds daft

But you may be better doing batch painting

Pairing green on 3-5 lads then brown etc

Like a conveyer belt, then you donโ€™t have to wait around for it to dry

I plan to do that next with the boyz ๐Ÿ™‚ I really wanted first to focus on one model to gain some skills on a few techniques

Good plan!

Pretty reasonable, I did the same for my first mini. Now i batch paint to save time.

Edit: ok i should clarify, my first time painting was at a warhammer store. I got a free mini, got to paint it in store, ask questions from the staff etc. Afterwards i walked out with a combat patrol, paints, brushes, clippers and glue.

I started with eldar and honestly, they were easy. Cover the whole model in blue, white helmet (primed separate), glue together, black weapon and add some minor details like highlights and gems.

Orks iz much tuffa.

The skin is easy enough with a speed paint, teef and eyez is a bit triky, but the numerous small details can be so overwhelming. Stitches, random armour plates, metal trim on boots, pouches, badges, holes in their cloth, beautiful models but a huge step up in complexity. And then youz went and gave 'im checkerz on iz shoulda! Beautiful work.

As the other rsaid, 10 is a lot, but it's a nob and you've made a great first start.

If you can spare the extra cost, look to get mirco set and micro sol. 2 liquids tht make adding the paper decals much easier and saves you drawing the skull in future. Loads of easy tutorials to follow online.

Oh, for easy skin: white paint, rough brush, green speed paint. Prime black, generously dry brush with white, apply speed paint. Done.

2

u/FrenchPoire 22h ago

Thanks! I didn't draw the skull, it's a decal but I wanted to add battle damage effect ๐Ÿ˜Š Though, I'll follow your advice. Can I have them matt?

2

u/MobileSeparate398 22h ago

Micro set will make it stick better, micro sol will dissolve it to really adhere. I also have a matt wash to make them blend in and avoid the decal glare.

1

u/FrenchPoire 22h ago

Yeah because I have the decal glare now, can I add that after or it's too late?

2

u/MobileSeparate398 20h ago

Sorry, valejo matt, not 2 thin coats!

2

u/MobileSeparate398 22h ago

After, a matt wash will make the glare lesser and the whole area washed will appear more matt.

The two thin coats one is good, costs about ยฃ3 if I remember correctly

Ive never seen a blue eyed ork before! Though I do recall seeing orks eyes blew over there .

1

u/FrenchPoire 22h ago

Blue eyed orks are not lore accurate?

3

u/flipsix3 22h ago

They generally have (all) red eyes, but your models are yours.

The eyes do look a bit odd, but otherwise as a first model you e fine a great job and some really cool elements like your rust, checkerboards, etc.

Heโ€™ll look great on the table with a bunch of mates.

2

u/FrenchPoire 22h ago

Thanks, I didn't know about that. I'll pay attention for my next models ๐Ÿ˜Š

1

u/flipsix3 19h ago

Hey, your tours your choice ๐Ÿ‘

2

u/Ill-Investigator4303 22h ago

I'm very impressed by the way you painted the eye. I also love the rust effects.

1

u/FrenchPoire 22h ago

Thanks, the eye was the most counter-intuitive part to paint. I started painting it white and I didn't like the result at all. Then, I looked for a tutorial on YouTube and understood that I need to paint it brown first, then beige, then the color I chose for the eye (blue) and finally black. That was really difficult for me! I'm glad the result is ok

10 hours is a long time indeed, but if this is your first then itโ€™s normal to be slower. You will be faster with every new mini you practice, just keep painting. This would probably take me 2.5-3 hours as someone who started Warhammer in June this year. It looks very good for a first btw

Thanks a lot! This is encouraging ๐Ÿ˜Š
