NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION SubI in one state?
Current MS4 in a research year. Home state is NY and looking to maximize chances at matching in NY. Besides doing a subI at my home program (which is not in NY), is it a bad idea to do all my subIs in NY? Do you think programs (mainly outside of NY) see this as a red flag when it comes to interview offers and making match lists?

Over 70% of matched orthos either did a sub-l at the program they matched, or that is their home program. It’s because the older residents have great power in the matching process and will advocate for you if they like and know you. They don’t care wherever else you applied. They all get that. So don’t worry about that, you need to just be a rock star wherever you rotate.
Remember, the places you rotate, the academics just get you in the door. Once you come in to rotate, they don’t care about the numbers anymore. You already did that to be allowed to rotate there. They are more interested in your personality, work ethic, and if you are a team player. It’s an audition, a month long interview.

You should do subIs where you have the best chance of matching (which is where you have connections). Everyone who matches at the top programs in ny are having people make calls that are connected . If you don’t have that up your sleeve I would caution you against rotating only at nyc programs

We often don’t even know where you did your sub-I’s, and if you choose to disclose that rather it be in one geographical area to show you’re serious about a certain location due to close ties

Thank you. I thought where you rotate is listed on your transcript/deans letter, is it not?

Only three grades seen on the transcript, and a lot of the schools won’t have the location on MSPE, just the comments! Also some schools upload MSPE’s well before ERAS is submitted, so often students don’t have comments or rotation grades included from Aug-Sept

You should rotate at places you want to match at. Why do sub-I’s in Texas if that’s not where you want to be?
