Oof. Very cool.

Not quite $80 cool.

Might steal your idea and make my own for for a $4 clamshell and $13 lights tho!

We will find an Etsy seller who is native to earth and understands current economic conditions one day, but probably not today

So you destroy actual VHS cases for these?

Definitely not. Looking at their Etsy store, it looks like they bulk bought those clear cases like we used to see in video rental stores (< $3-$4 each when bought in bundles) and then printed reproductions of the original covers (likely on a clear sheet on Inkjet Transparency Film that's ~ $8 for a pack of 30) and tosses in a cheap remote control LED light (most <$10 on Amazon) and sells them for about $80 when you fold in the shipping.

That explanation makes sense and is how I would go about making these, but how would they be "upcycled" if nothing is actually reused?

Marketing language. From their own listing: "All covers are high resolution scans of the originals and all of the cuts are done by hand." The only thing I can think of that would be considered "upcycled" would be the blank clear cases may have been laying around for a while.

They would have to be used, though. “Upcycled” makes it sound as though you’re getting, well, an upcycled VHS.

That’s pretty much my point. “Upcycled” in this case, is nonsense. There is no VHS, no original label (they are printed off scans of the original labels), and just maybe an old clear VHS storage case. For $80.
