Discussion Playing pathologic 3

I’ve recently just finished my first run through of pathologic 2 and enjoyed it a lot once doing a deep dive into story and playing both endings. I don’t think I could play another run of pathologic 2 for a while because it is genuinely a draining experience, but how far does pathologic 3 differ?
I’ve heard it’s a bit more forgiving in the sense that it’s not “as hard of a game” I’m interested to play it but if it’s anywhere near as crushing as pathologic 2 can be I think I may just need to take a little break and come back to the series at a later point.

It's not like 2 at all. 2 is a hard-core survival game, 3 feels more like a psychological horror game to me, you have to keep your mental state in check instead of hunger, sleep etc. It's also easily the best "doctor" game in the series, the diagnosing is really in-depth and probably my favourite part of the game.

That sounds like possibly a more enjoyable experience for me, I will definitely consider picking it up soon if this is the case because I loved the hardcore survival but it’s just a bit too much for me to go straight into another play of it. I do love psychological horror and would be very interested to play the bachelors route, thanks for the reply!

I'd add! P3 is a much longer game, its more of a... pondering the meaning and concepts as you unfold to them to understand what you are trying to understand and how to accomplish it. "I KNOW there is an answer, I know there is! But how do I get there?" It fits the bachelor quite well, I think.

Yeah I really love both games personally. I didn't even mention the actual best part of 3, which is that you play as the bachelor and that means you can be a total dickhead to everyone

So I saw somewhere that when pathologic 2 first released it was supposed to have a changeling and bachelor route but got scrapped due to workload and other reasons. Is pathologic 3 supposed to be the bachelors route? Meaning it’s the same plague with same characters, and sort of second part of question if this is true I’m assuming a lot of characters from P2 will be different levels of important for P3? Like Lara and Rubin will be in the game but not as important and other characters will be more story involved if you get what I mean.

Yes exactly, it's the same overall story but from a completely different perspective. The bachelor route has always been the most political of the 3, you're mostly talking to the leaders and upper class citizens, dealing with civil unrest, signing decrees, administering vaccines, etc. I have no idea what the changeling route will be like in P4, but I hope it's as radically different as 3 was.

Thank you for taking the time to answer, feel a lot more inclined to play P3 now rather than wait a bit

If you can, avoid all spoilers before going in. I managed to not know anything and the plot twists ended up being incredibly effective for me. Once you decide you're going to give it a shot, stay off this reddit, avoid discussion, just get in there.

But as someone who has 75 hours in P3 now... it's a game that is taxing mentally and psychologically but all of that is purely narrative. In P2, Artemy's journey is harrowing and difficult, but what exacerbates that is the constant balancing of meters. It's hard to keep Artemy alive and if you fail, the game becomes harder. You know all this.

With Daniil, the meter you need to track to keep him alive is "how many calomel do I have on me" with a side of "is my mood high enough that Apathy isn't going to drain my time travel juice." For real: Apathy will ruin you faster than Mania.

But to me it feels like the devil's bargain for not having to handle the survival meters is two-fold. One: This game is extremely good at simulating the mental strain of being a time traveler. Esp from day 7 thru 12, trying to line up events the way you need to requires you to remember a huge amount of information and to predict the effects of your interference accordingly. (Unless you use walkthroughs, i guess. I didn't touch one until I hit a questline I just could not solve and guess that, none of the walkthroughs cover it anyway! Ha.)

Two: This is purely subjective but I think the horror of Daniil's Fun Steppe Vacation easily outstrips the horror of Artemy's. I love Artemy to death and I will never say he's got it easy. But the sheer amount of "oh what the actual fuck" moments in Daniil's P3 route is just worse.

The reason all that avoids being as crushing as P2 is, again, lack of the survival meters as a heightening tactic, but also: the game has multiple moments of actual levity and comedic beats. (On Day 6, go figure out what Artemy is doing, trust me.) It knows when to let you take a breath. And your forward momentum is so player-driven, curiosity-driven, I think that mitigates the strain.

That's my more-than-two-cents.

Which quest did the walkthroughs not cover? I used one for later days because I was so confused, and now I'm wondering if I missed some plot line

OP, don't look, this is literally Day 12 spoilers.

I really wanted Khan and the Dogheads to evacuate to the New Nutshell instead of the usual location. I thought it was simply a matter of making sure that the Crude Sprawl was not infected on Day 11, which took no joke an hour of rearranging decrees. But it still didn't trigger. I have two theories on what is needed to make it happen, so that's on my current To Do list.

I played 2 first, enjoyed it then years later 3 came out. I absolutely love 3, but as has been described elsewhere its a very different game. I played it upon release & when I finished, I started again (due to some plot reason I wont go into). Its taken all my willpower to hold off until now before playing a third time.

Think of it as a psychological horror mix between House MD. & Doctor Who.

3 gets more difficult as days go on

2s the opposite

Enjoy them both

Differs a lot. Also time travel and fast travel. Danil has places to be and he’s not gonna let walking & time get in his way.

Mechanics-wise 3 is much easier, if that's what you're worried about. The gameplay is very different. The horror and atmosphere is also better in 2. The narrative is about as soul-crushing though, and the writing is peak. I'd take a bit of a breather.
