Lol, something similar happened to me with a client, he complained that the fans are making too much noise when working from home...and at the office it was mostly silent. Turns out that he was working from his bed, and blocking everything because of the blanket he was setting his laptop on...he even mentioned that he would wrap the laptop on the sides when holding in his lap, because he didn't like the noise and heat. I had to put a lot of questions before getting the right answers...since the temps were fine at the office.

2.5k

u/ewanm01-369 Apr 18 '26

Man, you'd think it shouldn't be hard for someone to figure out what's wrong in this situation. I mean, if it's working perfectly at the office but you're using it differently at home, it really shouldn't be difficult to understand the issue. Some people just have absolutely no clue I guess.

733

u/imightbetired PC Master Race Apr 18 '26

Exactly. He didn't say that at first, he just complained about the noise and heat...so since I tested the laptop at the office and it was fine, even in benchmarks it was not overheating (more than the normal laptop under those conditions), his usage not reaching 100% cpu/gpu usage normally...should have been fine, right? Since it passed benchmarks, his temps under normal conditions should be way lower. I had to start questioning his routine and where he is placing the laptop when working, until he gave the relevant answers.

this same sort of scenario  applies to healthcare.

201

u/FoSheezyItzMrJGeezy Apr 18 '26

Yes, as someone who went to college for computer programming but ended up being a nurse, you are very correct that this scenario applies to healthcare .....

253

u/Whole_Influence_3725 Apr 18 '26

"Uh, I have a completely normal daily routine and don't take any medications?"

<14 minutes of questioning later>

"...after which I take my afternoon dose of sudafed and pop my laptop in the freezer to cool-"

Me: "Wait. Stop. What?"

Also in healthcare they could die if the problem isn't solved and they spend the entire time ignoring/correcting you based on what chat gpt or some homeopath in a facebook post told them

7

u/last_rights Apr 19 '26

Also in healthcare you tell the doctor a myriad of problems you've been experiencing because you only get one covered visit a year, and then they just tell you you have anxiety/it's your period/it's normal/you're fine and then you go to urgent care a week later with a minor medical emergency that you spelled out for them exactly what it was and now you're paying $1000+ because they didn't listen to you in the first place.

There is no way my heavy alcohol consumption is the primary factor for my condition. Probably an allergic reaction to non-alcoholic beverages.

Troubleshooting is more of a skill than most people realise.

231

u/GreatStateOfSadness Apr 18 '26

The older I get the more I realize how naturally uncurious some people are. Most people seem to go through life uninterested in how anything around them works.

89

u/Bleaker82 Apr 18 '26

Unfortunately, that is most people.

97

u/Mephistito Apr 18 '26

Truly blows my mind.

I absolutely can never comprehend how deeply uncurious so many people are.
Like, humans beat out EVERY other species because of our curiosity and wondering "What causes this effect? Oh neat, I could use that."

So by not being curious it's like you've literally lost your humanity.

62

u/Megneous Apr 18 '26

I've said it hundreds of times before, and I'm sure I'll say it many more times, but I'm pretty sure at least 80% of humanity just aren't general intelligences. I may sound elitist, but I think the top 20% or so of our species drags the rest of us screaming into the future, one day at a time.

37

u/SamSibbens Apr 18 '26

It intuitively sounds accurate but then you find out how truly dumb a trilingual programmer is in situations outside of their expertise and then you're like "Hum. Perhaps they aren't any smarter than average"

I may or may not be that trilingual dumbass programmer and I will not be answering any questions.

13

u/Dividedthought Apr 18 '26

Nah, it's even simpler than that: An expert is someone who knows a whole lot about from a very narrow band of human knowledge. Outside of that they are just the average person.

Same, for me the whole point of school was to cultivate the skill of learning and continuing to teach myself even after school, for the rest of my life.

A lot of people probably see learning as just a phase in their life they are happy to leave behind once they leave school, I guess...

It makes you think how much people treat certain objects as magical items. They don't even bother searching for answers because "it'd obviously be too complicated".

10

u/DetectiveClownMD Apr 18 '26

I think it has to do with income as well. Whenever my nieces and nephews ask me how I know so many randon things I have to explain, poverty.

I got my computers from flea markets and hand me downs. If it broke I was fucked so I learned to fix it. Same with cars, home stuff too.

I mean I am curious as well but I wonder if the curiousity was born of boredom and not having the means.

7

u/live-the-future R9 3900X, 2080 Super, 4K, 32GB DDR4 3200 Apr 18 '26

I think for some people it's partly a lack of self-confidence in being able to learn something, or just mental laziness.

I have a co-worker who's fully literate, but once told me she hates to read--anything. That kind of mindset is just alien to me.

As IT I once had a lady tell me her keyboard is broken its typing on its own without touching it. I go to her office and she has a notebook pressed down on her space key on the actual laptop we used but had her hooked up keyboard out untouched. I died laughing inside and facepalmed but moved the notebook without even telling her what happened and just went to use it normally and basically gaslit the crap out of them.

Most of these employees who were engineers making x4+ more money than me btw, would do this kind of stuff daily so I didn’t even feel bad.

When I moved into my apartment, my roommate would always overload our washing machine up to the point that it would start moving around the bathroom. One time the drum came loose from one of the hooks it's hanging from and I had to fix that. One time she was complaining about how the washing machine is failing becuase it keeps bouncing around every time until I suggested that maybe she can try putting in less laundry? It hasn't happened since. She has been using the waching machine like this for 2 years prior to me moving in.

It's why I believe for many laptops, the name is a misnomer in a way. You can't place them on your lap because it has the same effect of placing it on a soft surface like a blanket. A solid surface is pretty much needed so the feet of the laptop can give the clearance needed for proper cooling.

46

u/imightbetired PC Master Race Apr 18 '26

I agree with you to a certain point, laptops can work fine in your lap, as long as you are not blocking the intake or exhaust completely. It's not an ideal situation for cooling, but it's a little hard to block the cooling too much in your lap. With a blanket...yeah. Especially when you are trying to block the noise and heat...lol.

u/zuilli RX 9070 XT // 9800x3D // 2x16GB 6000Mhz DDR5 Apr 18 '26

Pro tip: get one of those bed trays for the laptop, I use mine in bed all the time and the tray stops it from getting suffocated by blankets. Mine even has a little elevated corner where I rest the back part of the laptop on top and it creates a nice space for the bottom fans to get air.

When I was 17-18, I used to play on my laptop while in bed. I was a top 5 player on my Travian server and was such a nolife that I kept the laptop running overnight so I could check on my account every hour or so (alarm clock... yup, true nolife) At some point the plastic near the keyboard melted and I could no longer close the laptop's screen. Thankfully it was still working fine but I changed my habits a little ^

Fixed up an old office laptop for the sister in-law to play the Sims 3. I gave her instructions not to put it on soft surfaces to avoid overheating. On top of that, I even gave her a cut to size 1/4 piece of plywood to give it ventilation in the event she played it on her lap or in bed.

The laptop didn't last 6 months.

5

u/AKAFallow Apr 19 '26

I got Sims 4 for free on Steam one day, so I gave my old laptop to my sister who loves that franchise, and realized I had 60+ hours after 3 days of giving it to her because she never closed the lid once, leaving the game running every night. Turns out she would get bored and sit on her bed with her phone, to the point she forgot the game was running since the screen would turn black

It's not that they don't have physical concept of the world. People normally don't even know there are fans inside laptops and those who do mostly think the vents on the side are the intake ( I have literally met multiple people who counts the number of vents on the side and say they have that many fans on their laptop)

Exactly. You don't know what you don't know, just be willing to learn.

16

u/MoocowR Apr 18 '26

Exactly. You don't know what you don't know, just be willing to learn.

So many people have no concept of how the physical world works.

The point of the comment is that most people have accumulated enough experiences to have a basic understanding of how things work without needing to be explicitly told/taught that putting a sticker on a vent could cause problems. You don't even need to understand what it does, just the fact that it's there in the first place should activate some neurons.

The conclusion that blocking vents is a bad idea, is something any adult should be able to come too themselves. Some people do truly have zero concept for how anything works and zero ability to self troubleshoot.

14

u/FlamingWeasel http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198056187630 Apr 18 '26

Right? Like, you don't stop for a second to consider why there's a vent there? You don't bother checking into that before covering it?

And then when you have problems with overheating you don't think for a second that covering those funky holes where the air was blowing around could have something to do with it?

I don't wanna be mean to people, but like, come on. She's not even a child. You don't have to understand every aspect of how a laptop functions to have some critical thinking here.

Yeah I was surprised to learn that many people don't have an internal monologue, so one day I brought this up to two of my closest friends and one of them had a hard time gasping what we were even talking about lol... that friend just says and does stuff without thinking all his life, even though he's like one of the smartest students I know and is probably going to have a top tier government job in a few years..

18

u/Goldenrah 7600 | Sapphire Pure 7700 XT | 32GB RAM Apr 18 '26

Your friend probably just has a different way of thinking outside a inner monologue. Instead of having to reason within himself, the ideas pop out visually, or the information is so internalized that instead of having to think about it, they just do, like what many professional athletes describe as the flow state.

Having an internal monologue or not doesn't affect intelligence in any way.

13

u/Antique_Mud_1433 Apr 18 '26

No internal monologue doesn't mean no thoughts.

It just means they don't talk to themselves inside their head.

They can still think "I wonder how this works" but they don't have a voice saying that in their head.

I have an internal monologue but i also occasionally have thoughts without having to describe them using the voice in my head. You don't need one for living or even intelligent processes.

5

u/First-Junket124 Apr 18 '26

Which is one of those concepts I literally can't wrap my head around and I'm sure the opposite thinks the same of people like me.

How can you not have a voice in your head that can say stuff internally? Like how do you think? How does it even work?

I'd say ignorant more than dumb. Had she learned the function of the "holes" before wrapping the computer, she would likely not have made that mistake. But yeah there may be some dumbness involved when people don't notice certain stuff and wonder about its function, like the parts of a machine.

There have been cases of people removing the air intake cover of their smart car (it was round on early models) instead of opening the fuel filler cap and literally pumping gas into the engine.

Human stupidity knows no bounds.

Some unibody laptops, like some Macbooks, don't have vents on the bottom, so stickers/wraps/covers can go all around on those.

18

u/Black_Star_Mechanic Apr 18 '26

Fun fact. MacBooks cool by dispersing the heat across the surface are of the frame. Stickers over the entire frame don’t help it cool

Back when i was a kid , my dad and i got annoyed about the dust inside our pc, so our solution was to block all entrances of the pc with foam glued to the case.

One day as i was playing Warcraft 3 the pc shutdown and didnt turn on afterwards. We took it to the local PC shop and the guy opened the case and i could feel just how much he wanted to laugh his ass off but he was like "sir , the fans aren't just for decoration, they are meant to keep the components cool".

We basically melted the rams and the motherboard. If social media was a thing back then im pretty sure id become a meme.

u/runbrap Apr 18 '26

Positive airflow case is better for dust right? Or is it other way around.

Some people are just afraid of messing with things they don’t understand. I have plenty of friends who just never consider troubleshooting their own computers and they ask me to help. They’re always willing to pay but I decline and tell them I’ll teach them how to do it for free and they’re always afraid of doing it themselves.

13

u/f4Ith-35 Apr 18 '26

Probably because its expensive and if they do fuck something up its a lot of money down the drain.

Who actually cares to skin the bottom of a laptop... You know... The part you'll NEVER SEE.

20

u/dc469 Apr 18 '26

I got A+ certified in high school, I remember the CompTIA VP came to give a lecture and one of the things he said to us was that part of our job was to stop this. This was back with crt monitors and he was like (in a sorta mocking but not intentionally insulting girly voice, we didn't have any girls in the class) "these little old ladies are going to be 'oh that beige is so ugly, I know we will put some cute little fabric over it to cover it up' and your job is to tell them why that's a bad idea".

But like, this is why a well rounded education is important. People need stem knowledge to not make mistakes like this video, and people need arts and humanities knowledge to gestures at world and current affairs ...avoid that.

20

u/Dick_Nation There's nothing to see here. Apr 18 '26

This may be the very first electronic device she's ever owned with a fan. She looks pretty young - probably owns a phone and maybe a tablet, and virtually every single one of those is sealed and passively cools due to its form factor. The idea of an actively running fan along with intake and exhaust ports might be completely foreign to a young person.

18

u/Leows Apr 18 '26

I was about to say the exact same thing.

I don't own a car, never have, and I don't drive, nor do I know anything about them.

Yet, if there's a spot where air is coming out of it, it's safe to assume it's for a reason and not to block it.

Some people just lack common sense and critical thinking entirely.

No one is curious anymore. So many times a trivial question comes up in conversation, like when watching a movie, etc. So many people, especially young people, will hear a question and have no interest in finding out the answer, even when they have the answer literally in their hands.

6

I remember I once sent my old laptop to a repair center when it was having some issues working. From what I remember there were some components inside that were changed as part of the repair. Some time later, my laptop had some issues where it kept randomly shutting down on its own (due to overheating). At that time I was learning to repair my computer myself so I decided to open it. It turns out, the new components the repair center had placed in my laptop still had their plastic packaging on them. I was appalled at how those repair centers can rip people off.
