Tech Support What is this ??? My monitor crashes when I activate my blinds

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi !

I have an ASUS DUAL GTX 1070 OC that I've been using for about a year.

The card has 2 DP and 2 HDMI ports, I've always known that one of the DP (the one closest to the mother board) had connectivity issues but I've never looked into it and used the other DP that had no problem.

I plan to upgrade soon to a RX 5700XT and I've been testing my current card to resell it.

While testing, I've noticed that the "connectivity issues" happens specifically when I use my remote to control my blinds, like wtf ??? ngl I laughed when I noticed

*Addendum: The spamming with the remote in the video is ONE of the triggers that bugs my monitor, even when I play normally, I sometimes have some white flashes that you can see in the video but it doesn't go as far as to shutting off the monitor.

I don't really understand where this comes from and if this is fixable, I don't even know how I should describe it when reselling and if it should impact the price.

I guess it's getting a specific frequence signal from the remote ? It doesn't happens very often and I'm using WiFi constantly, so it's only specific frequencies that trigger it I'm guessing

My motherboard is a TUF B450-PLUS GAMING.

Heeelp

Edit: Additional info: My monitor is not wireless, if it's EMI, does it mean it's only affecting the port ?

I've been asked to unplug the blinds and retry, the bug is not happening when I use my remote on the unplugged blinds

I feel like I have to emphasis this but the bug doesn't happen at all when I plug the same monitor into the other display port of my graphics card

Edit 2: Still trying to fix it

It seems that it's coming from the blinds, they send a bad signal to my graphics card. But it only affect 1 of the port. When I plug my monitor into the other port, it doesn't bug. So the other ports are obviously protected against that kind of Interference. I'd like to fix the remaining port.

Edit 3: Not fixed

I PLAN TO SELL IT AND I WANT TO KNOW IF MY GPU WORKS PERFECTLY AND FIX IT IF NO, STOP TELLING ME TO "NOT USE YOUR BLINDS",

IF I SELL IT TO SOMEONE AND THEIR NEIGHBOR HAS THE SAME BLINDS HOW DO I JUSTIFY IT TO THEM IF I TELL THEM THE GPU WORKS PERFECTLY + If that kind of blinds triggers a bug, I can only imagine how many other devices can trigger the same bug

Edit 4: Addressing some of the responses

Ok it seems that some people are just taking me for a retard and are wondering why I'm spamming the remote, it's just to show the bug. When I don't use the blinds, I still have some white strips that appears on my screens like a flash (you can notice them in the video before the monitors shuts off) It's probably due to other interference problems not linked to my blinds, it seems that my display port on my GPU reacts to more than my blinds

Edit 5: Changing outlets

As some suggested, I tried to draw power from the bathroom (with a chain of power strips) and plugged both monitor and PC on it. It still had the same bug

Edit 6: Why I think it's not the monitor nor the cable:

When I switch the port I use on the GPU, while keeping the SAME cable and SAME monitor, the bug suddenly disappears. Some comments still think it's coming from the cable or monitor because interference is something too complex to understand for me and It's possible. I'll still search for a solution though but I did try to test the theory

I tried by changing the monitor and still same bug. I did not change the cable though, I don't have other Display port Cable to try :/ Might have to try again when I can get one
The cable seems insulated enough though. I bought the cable a year ago on Amazon and this is the exact one: https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0F5W7J44H

Edit 7: Bad Electricity and Poor filtering on my blinds' motor

Yes, I agree with that. But it doesn't happen on all my GPU's port, meaning that the others port are protected against bad electricity but not the one I'm testing, is it possible that bad electricity only focus one fully working port ? I'm not changing blinds, I'd like to isolate the remaining port and fix it

Edit 8: Conclusion, did not find a solution for the GPU specifically.

I got my new RX 5700XT ! I tried it and I have no bug or whatsoever on all the ports of the GPU.

I've decided to list the faulty one (the 1070) while specifying that one port is kind of defect and has bad grounding which make is sensitive to local electric signals

Yeah, pressing up down up down up down quickly causes serious EMF problems in the motor of the blinds, causing phase shifting on the power line. Keep repeating enough and the motor will burn. Also really poor constructed motor controller that let this happen, Temu quality.

u/scotte416 i5-13400 - 5060ti16 May 21 '26

It probably has no capacitors or anything, just a motor straight up soldered to the line.

29

u/Sleurhutje May 22 '26

Not even a delay between switching back and forth.

Why? We have a lot of FCC certified electronics.

167

u/InconceivableIsh May 21 '26

FCC is a US regulatory agency. So the cert doesn't really carry weight in the EU I assume. I think you would want CE certification.

94

u/Javad0g 25y IT, custom builds/network admin May 22 '26

You have to watch for the rogue 'CE' which masquerades as Conformité Européenne however it really means 'China Export'

33

u/InconceivableIsh May 22 '26

Interesting that they get away with that. Looks like it is the same font just a spacing difference?

17

u/sekrit_dokument Ryzen 7 5700X3D | RX 7900XTX Nitro+ | 32GB 3600MHz May 22 '26

CE is at the end of the day just a declaration that the product conforms to EU regulations... There's no testing or anything (besides a few product categories) and all it means is that the manufacturer assures you that it is compliant.

In other words "china export" isn't really a thing because you don't actually need to adhere to any regulation to put a CE mark on your product, you just need to claim that you do.

And well... Good luck suing a Chinese manufacturer for a false CE marking lol

3

u/Swimming_Possible_68 May 22 '26

And then here in the UK we have the rather useless UKCA mark.... Because Brexit and wanting something different. Even though it follows basically the same rules as the CE mark.

Even in Canada most everything is CE.

Edit: my bad, everything is supposed to be CUL here certified by Canada underwriter laboratories Or our old standard which is always CSA (Canadian Standards Association

10

It should be ISED for Canada though but that is fairly new of last year.

For the EU there are several approvals, like the TüV for Germany, KEMA for the Netherlands and so on. For France it would be LNE or LCIE.

OP could get fined if they do it enough, as it causes problems for the grid controllers who have to constantly monitor for shit like this. Temu just ignores regulations and makes shit look modern

8

u/divat10 May 22 '26

Are these motors really big enough for that?

5

u/Dienowwww May 22 '26

Probably not enough to fuck up the ENTIRE grid, but it is enough to be noticed on their sensors and probably cause faults in the systems

u/Miinoda May 22 '26

This also happens on my company setup, which is hardwired. Since that office was the way it is since i‘m in there (20 years) I don‘t think it‘s temu quality.

Also to add: this happens by pressing once. And not repeatedly

Electromagnetic interference. Same thing happens when I use my radio near a monitor at work.

u/Sufficient-Loan8729 May 21 '26

Can a little TV remote do that?

u/zeug666 No gods or kings, only man. May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

It's the motor in the blinds sending out errant signals in a range that interferes with the display.

There was a story a few years ago about someone's garage fridge making garage door openers in a neighborhood not work.

Best I could find was a beer fridge blocking mobile service in Australia.

https://interferencetechnology.com/beer-fridge-disrupts-mobile-networks-in-australia/

This is kinda similar to one of my wildest troubleshooting stories for electrical issues.

Dramatically shortening it here but the bullet points are:

  • customer complains that a circuit in their house trips at random. Will hold anywhere from 5 minutes to a couple months.

  • (for those that care it was an AFCI back when they sucked) i show up looking for loose neutrals and stuff. I find a couple likely culprits and fix them. Tell customer i believe its fixed but call if it happens again.

  • 3 weeks later it happens. I show up and it happens 3 times while im there. Flip on breaker, holds for 10-15 min, then trips. Im lost so swap breaker for new one. I unplug everything on the circuit and tell customer i suspect an appliance or equipment so pay attention if it trips, whats being used.

  • 2 days later, the issue is worse. I come back and i visit with customer. Have them keep a journal of the exact time it trips, what they were doing, and walk the circuit to see whats plugged in. Ask for them to give it 2 months of documenting to see a pattern.

  • 2 months later, i review the notes. Nothing makes sense but it revolves around the printer. Sometimes. I go to house and we thoroughly tested and discovered it was a fancy hp printer!

The printer would operate totally fine. Turn it off, turn it on, print, scan, everything. What would trip the circuit is if the printer was left on, and it went into "sleep mode" it would trip if you clicked print on the pc or phone or something. It was the "wake up and print" signal that would trip the circuit reliably. If it was asleep and you pushed a button, then printed it was fine.

Luckily for the customer, all of this only cost him about $150 out of pocket.

Eta: the customer never thought of printer because the delay in the wakeup/print from sleep would result in him doing something else when it tripped. (Printing frequently from phone)

48

u/Bama_Bro_Nerd May 21 '26

I remember this story. When this happens it is usually a product from China that is not following regulations best I recall. Wireless products have specific frequencies they are not supposed to use or are reserved for specific stuff if I remember correctly basically meaning you can make a fridge that runs on garage door frequencies and stuff like this happens causing interference.

35

u/Sufficient-Loan8729 May 21 '26

FCC. Frequencies can interrupt but he has a moniter that does not use wireless control. The motor in the blinds are not FCC cert so it emitting causing EMI and interrupting with the internals of the moniter.

6

u/Bama_Bro_Nerd May 21 '26

That's right. Thank you for correcting and reminding me. It has been years since I read that story so I appreciate you telling the ignorant out of me 😂

13

u/xAnimosityx May 21 '26

My buddies fridge blocks any and all phone signals within 5ft of it, we discovered it by complete accident when I went over to his house while he was on vacation to feed his cat and the call went dead on my end as I was asking him where he keeps the cat food

u/Trusted_Entity May 21 '26

When I was working as an HVAC technician i encountered something very similar. It was an expensive AC system, the air handler was in the garage. They both interfered with each other. The neighbor had an identical setup with no issues. 🤷

Once my father bought one of those pillows that gives massages and vibrates for the lumbars, when it was at max strength the TV signal in the whole building stopped working (and I guess the neighbouring buildings) and on the middle setting wifi died, it was weird

It's not the TV remote doing it, it's the motor pulling lots of current when it starts moving.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inrush_current

That and/or the disturbance while it's running. But more often it's the initial starting that causes problems with sensitive electronics. So not only EMF, but also the voltage drop in the circuit itself that can cause problems here.

This sometimes happens with my monitor when I get up from my computer chair and walk away. The screen goes black and on again quickly.

For me it's every time without fail.

From my research, a better video cable or running your power cables further away from the other cables should help.

This is almost definitely NOT the GPU, and it's most certainly the wiring in your house, and the wiring in those blinds. More than likely, your PC and your Blinds are on the same circuit/breaker. When your blinds motors struggle (like starting from a dead stop, reversing directions, stopping and starting momentarily like when you spam the buttons), they are likely sending a bit of voltage back into the mains, and into your PC on the same circuit. Your GPU is reacting to the voltage spike (likely in the port closest to power delivery) with a short break in the signal to your monitor. I'd say it could just as likely be the monitor getting the feedback from the mains, but it only happens to the monitor plugged into that display port. It could also be because that port isn't grounded as well, so it's only effecting the one port, but I wouldn't necessarily call that an issue with the card.

Your GPU is most likely perfectly fine, but it could cause damage over time if this is happening frequently enough. You can most likely solve the problem entirely by using a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), which is like a big beefy battery that goes between your wall power and your PC to protect it from unsteady power, power outages, lightning damage, etc. Another alternative would be to try to plug your PC into an outlet that is on a different breaker.

tl;dr
Use a UPS

11

u/kepasakepasa May 22 '26

This is the right answer. Had same with my blinds AND walking pad, motors just interference with monitor. With better power controller for monitor or UPS you can avoid it

4

u/nitro912gr AMD Ryzen 5 5500 / 16GB DDR4 / 5500XT 4GB May 22 '26

I can't believe I had to come this down to see this answer.

I did had the same problem, I had my system on that specific line in my house that the monitor was blinking if I was opening something that was using much power.

Moved it to another room with another line and the problem fixed itself.

Remember that remotes give off frequencies. Theres always a chance that a remote gives off the right frequency to cause interference with other electronics.

At one of my previous jobs, we were testing radios in FRS frequencies and we were able to trigger the paper shredder in the office when we transmitted on specific frequencies. Your issue is more than likely somewhat similar.

Like everyone said it's EMF interference. When I try to key up a radio, my whole monitor would shut off. A lot of people are saying it's blinds, but is your monitor connected to your PC with a cheap display cable? It could also be that your cable isn't properly shielded from EMF. Try replacing the cable if you have another one lying around and see if it still does that.

Shielding the motor and controller on the blinds will probably fix it. I would also check to make sure your monitor and GPU are seated well and that your PSU has good shielding. Electromagnetic interference can do this to many devices, that is why they are FCC rated for compatibility with certain amounts of interference. Even a cheap lightswitch and a bathroom fan can cause enough EM to visibly alter the device even on high end equipment, although most of the time that is not the case because more expensive electronics are protected better. The blinds might be causing a problem elsewhere too.

The amount of people mixing EMF and EMI up is kinda funny, EMF is the source (motor, arc or other) EMI is the effect.

In my professional opinion, use a higher quality DP cable, add chokes (those round little clip on magnets) to power cable on monitor and PC if they don't already have one.

Better yet switch to HDMI, DP is way more prone to interference from EMI as it kinda works like ethernet in that it transfers packets instead of HDMI TMDS stream, so any missing packets will cause flickering or at worse a loss in handshake.

2

u/rackfloor May 21 '26

It's just bad electrical cables, man... If it doesn't happen when the blinds are off, them the blinds are just drawing too much current for the electric to handle it.

Test it if that happens when the monitor is plugged in a different room.

2

u/HeidenShadows May 21 '26

You need a UPS for your PC if those are used a lot. You got a lot of phase wobble in your house circuit while using those.

u/Resident_Pientist_1 5700X3D 64GB 7900XTX May 22 '26 edited May 22 '26

Put ferrites on both ends of the display cable. Its EMI from the motor in your blinds generating (or canceling) a voltage on your cable that's making the monitor and video card lose their connection.

https://www.amazon.com/Electronic-Ferrites/b?ie=UTF8&node=306792011

Get one that fits the cable as tightly as possible.

Or just buy a cable that has ferrites built in (most nicer ones do, they have lumps on the ends).

2

Oh didn't know those existed.

If the problems comes from the cable or Monitor, I'm not trying to fix it because I just want to sell the GPU. I won't be using it soon due to upgrade.

If the problem comes from the GPU, then I should be aware and correctly advertise it before I sell it. I might give them your advice though ! Seems like a good fix

Not an electrician or related, but I guess something to do with the blind's motor interfering with the power.

u/Caityface91 Water cool ALL THE THINGS May 22 '26

Wow, a lot of weirdly angry people here..
Anyways, I had similar issues caused by static electricity from a fluffy robe and the gas strut on one of my office chairs - both caused AM radio spikes that were picked up by the HDMI cable and interrupting the signal (The wires in the cable itself are acting like a radio antenna).

A different length or better shielded cable might have helped, but I opted to get a cheap fibre optic one instead. The one I chose still used copper for power and grounding, but data/signal was fibre and that made it immune to EMI.
I was dealing with this over a dozen times per day and now, over 3 years later with the same display and fibre optic HDMI - hasn't happened even once. 👍

Obviously can't say it would 100% fix your issue but it sure looks like the same thing to me.

Do they have brushless motors in em? Mine doesn't straight up crash but my monitor screen goes black for a second every time I turn my fan on/off cause it has a brushless motor.

Not the gpu. Its power issues in the house that affect certain monitors. If your monitor is connected to the same line as the blinds try moving it to different source.

My brother had this issue with the AC, everytime the AC shifted states (like when it pauses after getting the temp, or when it starts working again after the temp got too high) his screen goes black for like 5 sec and comes back.

My guess its a combo of bad electric work in the house combined with a cheap/old monitor.

Im saying its the monitor because we replaced his monitor with another 1 of mine, and he never had that issue again.

u/Mountain-House3287 May 22 '26

You must take into consideration that your 1070 graphics card was produced in a world that did not have this kind of power from other devices broadcasting signals. It is not a fault of your card, it is rather a consequence of technology developing in our world.

Like many said, NOT GPU.
It's a PSU of the monitor.
Basically, it's caused by either an extreme source of EMI (the blinds motor) or a weakness in monitor's PSU (probably a half-dead cap) or a bit of both.

I have six (yep) identical displays and a single one of them blinks (on - off) to any fluctuation in the mains. I've put [a rather cheap] EMI filter "on it" at it did get better, but still somewhat sensitive and does it occasionally to specific triggers - just no longer enough to bother with a replacement.

BTW, unfiltered electric motors are by far the worst source of EMI bleed you can find in a residential setting.

Maybe stop clicking the remote buttons like a lunatic, also the motor of the blinds is crap quality.

2

u/Yamosu May 22 '26

Like others have said, it looks like RF related issues. I would try a better insulated cable to start with, then move on to clip on ferrites near the end of the monitor cables.

Your blinds suck

Your monitor sucks

The people who designed them deserve toe coffee table

2

u/ScottJC May 22 '26

if you stuck a lot of older mobile phones in front of your speakers you'd get a lot of noise coming from them.

the effect is probably something similar to that. its just interference.

Its your monitor thats being effected by it. definitely not your computer or gpu.

if it was your gpu the whole computer would seem to crash.

2

u/MaDpYrO May 22 '26

Is your monitor and your pc grounded?

As in, if you're using a cheap power strip (most people are) it most likely isn't.

That usually exacerbates interference to an insane degree.

Quite likely that the motor on the blinds isn't properly grounded either

If your selling it, I wouldn’t care at all about this issue. It’s not your problem if they encounter this issue after selling it. Also, the likelihood of them encountering the same issue is very low.

I sometimes have these strip glitches on my laptop's monitor on windows 11. But weirdly enough they don't appear at all on my linux system (neither mint nor void). So if it isn't interference it might be a software bug.

2

u/dragonfly19999 9d ago

You activated blind mode on your monitor

3

u/CharAznableLoNZ May 22 '26

Likely your monitor does not have good RF shielding. The remote or motor for your blinds is on a frequency your monitor maker did not test against. Talk to the support for your monitor maker. Likely they can't fix it but it will at least put it in their system that they might need better RF shielding.

If you have another monitor or TV, try testing with that one. If you still get the problem you know there is another piece that is the problem. Try changing the DP/HDMI cable for a better one.

It is unlikely the GPU since the PC case shields the components from RF interference. That is unless you use a fishtank case. If you do, cover the glass in foil and see if that makes any difference.

u/aberroco R9 9900X3D, 64GB DDR5 6000, RTX 3090 potato May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

No, it's not electromagnetic. Your blinds are most likely IR. Technically, IR is part of electromagnetic spectrum, but it's so high frequency that nothing in your monitor would receive it.

The reason is simply that your blinds motor is in direct connection with power outlet through a switch only, there's no capacitors to even out the load. So when the motor starts it draws a lot of current for a moment, until it ramps up to it's working speed, but for that moment it starves your other devices. PC PSU has large enough capacitors to skip one beat, monitor capacitors aren't that large, so it experiences power surges. To fix it you need to fix your blinds, but for that you need to be proficient at electronics.

Probably something to do with like radio frequencies

1

u/Miau_1337 May 21 '26

That’s the difference between a cheap PSU and a quality one.
When the blinds motor starts, it creates a large power draw spike, and the resulting voltage fluctuations are clearly affecting your PSU. Instead of filtering it properly, the PSU is passing unstable power on to the rest of your components. I usually dislike the fearmongering you see on Reddit, but in this case it genuinely will damage your PC over time.

Put your PC and monitor on a battery backup and only use the battery power (unplug the charged backup from the wall and run the pc and monitor on just that). Then spam your remote, if it fixes the problem the issue was your blinds wrecking havoc to your house's circuit when the remote was spammed.

u/TennisStarNo1 12700k 4080 May 21 '26

1

u/hakujo May 21 '26

Windows Shutdown

1

u/scarface4522 May 22 '26

Get some surge protectors or hire an electrician to rewire your house
Electric motors, no matter the size always go for the max power output on the first seconds to break inertia, making the extra amperage/wattage/voltage (i can't remember which one lol sorry) leak into the nearby wiring.
Poor quality instalations can cause interference and if the plugged electronics in your house don't have proper regulators this happens.

1

u/Testsubject276 May 22 '26

Maybe the motors in the shutters are probably starving the monitor's wall socket of power?

1

u/djDef80 May 22 '26

You could try using a UPS on all of your computer peripheral equipment. It filters the AC signal and cleans up the power. I recommend the sine wave UPS if you have the money for it.
