Keeps it a toasty 82F when the rest of the house is 70 ><

It's been so hot that I put it to sleep during the peak hours lately just to make my entertainment room more comfortable. I also have a 39 inch monitor that gives off heat. When I'm gaming my PC pumps out a very uncomfortable amount of heat during summer peak hours.

yup… I once destroyed my expensive gaming laptop by having an open waterbottle CLOSE BY (not even next to it), trying to open a banana. The banana was a tough one and my hand slipped off, hit the waterbottle and it went flying towards my laptop. The amount of crying I did afterwards was crazy. And then I did some more crying when I realised I had to save up for a new one and that this one would be even more expensive as the older model wasn’t being produced anymore. NEVER have I since had anything less than completely solid sitting even close to my new laptop. I’m too traumatised and this post is giving me shivers down my spine

bro it generates moisture as it defrosts and can drip from the bottom.
81
u/rennradrobo Aug 24 '26
Well at least it’s destilled water.
118
u/MadBullBen Aug 24 '26
Distilled water grabs metals very quickly from stuff it comes in contact with and quickly becomes conductive. Even water cooling loops quickly become conductive due to the connectors and water blocks.

If your PC generates enough heat, the bottom of the plate wont get cold and water wont condense on it.

It’s like how keyboards are now a LOT more resilient to liquid/spills than they used to be, you are now pretty safe from a few drops.
Though half a cup still ruined a couple of keys on my old keyboard after everything eventually dried out.

That reminds me about a funny story when I worked in a Data Center in Operations. It was at the end of the 90's and we just got brand new top of the line 22" Monitors, I think Viewsonic. One of my coworkers decided to put some frozen Butter with just the wrapper on top of the Monitor. After a while someone said "It smells good, someone got food?" Then I heard my coworker screaming and grabbing paper towels to get the molten Butter of the screen but it was too late. It was still working but there was frying Butter smell in the air and it was dripping into the screen. He got in trouble but wasn't fired. Brand new Monitor had to be replaced.

I put a sandwich on top (on a plate, I'm not a monster) and went downstairs, got distracted so I was busy for a while. Went back upstairs (not long enough for it to go stale) and started eating it, but it was slightly warm. Not enough to be unpleasant, but subtle and noticeable enough to feel weird. Sandwiches shouldn't be warm unless they're toast, especially if you're using your PC to warm it up.

Nah op chats losing it over nothing, youre not putting up a cold soda its a plate with a piece of cake on it. The most moisture thats gonna occur is the berry juice barely running down the side of the cake. Ive done shit like this too its fine. Theres more risk of dropping the plate when picking it up than any condensation forming under the plate
