Believe it or not, the way a technology is used matters.
Creating wheat that doesn't produce fertile seeds so that farmers are forced to buy new seed from you every season instead of planting their own crop? Bad! Creating a cultivar of rice that has vitamins normal rice lacks to reduce malnutrition in countries that rely almost entirely on rice as a staple food? Not bad!
Stealing art en masse to let billionaires profit from artists' appropriated talent without credit or compensation? Bad. Decompiling a game to run on a platform that it would never be released on otherwise? Not bad!
I'm sorry, but it sounds like you're trying to introduce "nuance" into this discussion.
I will now latch onto one of the words or phrases in an example of a point you made, make a strawman argument by misquoting you on it, and get showered in upvotes for it by people who both don't understand nuance and want to remain in their worldview that AI is a universal evil with 0 redeeming features.
As this is now a source of reddit karma for me, I will continue such strawman attacks as long it is lucrative for me to do so, even when it seems like I'm a arguing against thin air (it's because I am, nothing you argue technically matters, because I'll just repeat my points forever as long as it gets me updoots, which usually fails when the comment chain gets too deep for people to engage with it).
Because one is the systematic theft of millions of hours of creative labor with the express intent of disenfranchising the people who performed that labor for the enrichment of billionaires and the other is porting a videogame to Windows.
Technically the project doesn’t include the actual Bloodborne files, it’s just a translation layer with optimizations. The user still has to get a “legitimately obtained” copy of the game onto their PC. No one is actually going to do this though because ripping a PS4 disc isn’t braindead-simple. They’ll all just get a pirated copy of the game.
So the project is not piracy or theft in itself, but most of the users will have pirated copies.
Can i legally pay the artist without spend 300€ at least on a console i have no interest ? If no, it's not stealing, it's common sense. Like Gabe say : "Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem".
That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. It doesn't matter what it would cost you, the artist isn't compensated either way. The ai companies could say the same nonsense. "It's too expensive so it's not stealing, it's common sense."
Then Sony should release it, we all asking, BEGGING for it, it be more than 10 years. They don't want it ? Sure, i play for free then, good job. Keep your movie disguise as a game for you, keep your Playstation+ or whatever is called, i still will play for free. I win, you lose. And i was begging for you to win, next time don't split in my face.
"Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem".
This quote, nor your own statement, has anything to do with if it is or isn't stealing.
Gabe's quote is describing what he believes is a primary motivator for piracy, convenience. Under this view, creating a quality and convenient service would be one of the more effective ways at battling piracy.
I'm not going to soapbox for the sake of uber-corps, but piracy is still piracy no matter who the target is or how inconvenient a legit purchase would be.
All fine and well if its ramifications were that short. Every time AI is being used is warrant enough for heavy investments into data centers and suchlike, and going on about how those things are detrimental is a tangent i won't start up in the next 15-16 hours
It's been 11 years since initial release and roughly 6 years since the initial PS5 release date, it does not take that long to make a remaster if it was actually in the works
Hundreds of games get remasters after 10 or 15 years. Even more. It is just the same as AI stealing art from artists. Just in this case it started with AAA games but we now see it affecting indie titles with studios having to pull demos and in risk to close
Meanwhile bunch of sheep is cheering that downfal of gaming and rise is hardware prices while throwing money in drows at Anthropic who profut from it
