Can I just ask, not rudely, is not furthering this IP solely to blame on Sony? Or is Fromsoft not interested?
109
u/TheGrimmBorne 6h ago
Sony has requested to further it but Miazaki specifically told them no, he had a falling out with them and doesn’t trust them to do what he wants with the IP and since they own it, it means it’s dead

It's been suggested by industry insiders that before they were shuttered Bluepoint Games (studio that did the Demon's Souls remake) pitched a Bloodborne remaster to Sony. Sony was onboard, but Fromsoft declined it.
Conjecture is that they were unhappy with the Demon's Souls remake, and won't let anyone else touch any of their games.
I'm all for going after all the big corporations' greed, but in at least this one case it seems like Sony isn't the villain.
16
u/CheesecakeMilitia 5h ago
While I hear that conjecture a lot from Demon's Souls diehards who insist the remake is shit, the only thing we've actually heard from Miyazaki on Bloodborne remaster is that he thinks it's too soon to be worthwhile - specifically saying maybe PS6 generation would have enough of a graphical leap to justify the dev time investment.
25
u/Rev4li 7h ago
I didn't remember fromsoft being unhappy about demon souls but maybe. I do remember something about Miyazaki being very very protective of Bloodborne in particular because is a very special game for him so, yeah.
13
u/ScubaKlown 5h ago
If I remember correctly I heard from a gaming pod he wasn’t happy with the remake since they tweaked and changed some of the monster art and designs. Which FromSoft takes a lot of pride in. So if there’s gonna be a bb remake Miyazaki wants to do it himself but he’s very busy so that’s why it hasn’t happened.

Sony would milk this IP for all its worth.
It’s FromSoft not being on board which is halting that and any remaster even if just a native PS5 port.
FromSoft is big enough to throw their weight around and too busy with their own projects to handle a PS5 port or sequel. So it’s just forever stuck where it is now until they can do so.

Miyazaki wants to be the one to bring a team back into that universe, but they're focussing on other things rn. Sony has wanted to do a Bloodborne 2 for a long time, but they respect his wishes wrt the IP.
18
u/FanBladeFleshlight 3h ago
The Sony blame is a combo of "trust me bro" and the recent bandwagon hate for their change to digital in 2028.
Realistically there's no evidence that Sony has anything to do with BB not being ported.
→ More replies (2)13
u/Separate-Walrus- 6h ago
Fromsoft, or more accurately Miyazaki in particular, isn’t interested in sequels. Dark souls 2 had no involvement from him and 3 he only got involved at the end of development because he wanted some things tied up better
Sony would probably love to do more Bloodborne, but apparently out of respect for Miyazaki they don’t do more with the IP, remasters or sequels, without his support and involvement.
Overall I think that is a good thing. Dark souls 2 and 3 were, while obviously more modern than the first game, significantly less interesting than Dark Souls. And obviously not focusing on sequels meant we got stuff like Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden ring.

Miyazaki said he wants as many players as possibly to enjoy his games, he wants PC ports.
Sony has declined a bloodborne remaster in the past.

No. Sony pitched it to Fromsoft, they said no because they don't want another team to do it and they don't want to do it themselves right now.

The average person doesn't want to set up emulators. You've been able to play Pokemon Fire Red on your phone for like 15+ years. Didn't stop the same game from being one of the best selling games on Switch for the past year, even at $20.
If Sony released Bloodborne officially on Steam even next year, that shit is still going to go triple platinum and print money. People are always going to prefer the convenience of an official version they can buy on Steam, and play without having to do any additional setup like pirating the game and configuring these fan-made ports.

Bingo! So many pirates put their hats away when Steam came out because it just made buying your games so much more convenient.

I noticed that a lot of the less tech-savvy people are also just content not interacting with the media at all if it's not easily avaliable to them.
Makes sense considering we have so much media on every platform now. Unless you're jobless or something, it's simply far more likely that you don't have time for vast majority of series. And you'll only engage with whatever is most accessible.

u/TPO_Ava Ryzen 7700 / RX 9070 XT 9h ago
Ive played firered on emulators multiple times and when i saw it on the nintendo store yesterday i did consider getting it just to play it on an actual nintendo hardware (the switch was my first genuine Nintendo console).
I appreciate emulators and their usefulness but i would much prefer to play native if possible.
9
u/Cucumberino 9800X3D - RTX 4090 6h ago
Even if you're right, they're still losing a good amount of money by not doing so either earlier or at all (but especially if it's the later). And that adds up to the bad publicity they're getting as a whole and the bad name they'll carry onwards. Not that it's going to bankrupt them, but surely not good either.
22
u/uri_nrv 9h ago
That is also true, but it’s still important for the companies that there isn’t another way to play the game, whether through piracy or emulation.
That is why they spend so much money and resources chasing emulators (in Nintendo’s case) or paying for DRM to prevent piracy.
I do think that if the product is good and fairly priced, people prefer to buy it, and I don’t think piracy has that much impact sales between people who can actually afford to buy a game. But if the company never releases the game, and I have the choice to play it this way (through an emulator or an unofficial port), I will do it. And I probably wouldn’t buy an expensive game that I’ve already played.
25
u/ToothlessFTW AMD Ryzen 7 3700x, Windforce RTX 4070ti SUPER. 32GB DDR4 3200mhz 9h ago
I didn't say emulation shouldn't exist, or that emulation was a bad thing. I love emulation and I agree, for preservation's sake it's important that there's other ways to access these games.
My point was that this subreddit for the past month has been acting like this emulator is going to kill Sony, or that the PS5 is dead now, or even that GTA VI is going to bomb because everyone will emulate it instead. Emulation has never been a serious threat to these companies, in fact they've leveraged it multiple times. Casual gamers will never want to deal with the hassle of installing/setting up emulators and sorting through sketchy piracy sites to find the game, they're going to go play it legitimately on their PS5.
This is just a neat project that'll allow some cool things on PC, but it's never going to end consoles.

The performance is theoretically way better than any full system emulation. It's pretty damn easy to install too.

Probably more difficult to install than through steam or another game store though.

The 'Sony Greed' and the woman with devil horns tells you everything you need to know regarding the people 'championing' this like it's some direct fuck you to Sony. It was an inevitability accelerated by the advent of AI assisted coding.
Emulation is cool and I support wider access to video games, I even support piracy but the social media charge online has been incredibly cringe and just another way to say "Sony bad". It's especially cringe when who it's being 'backed' by are a group of people who will never use any of these things, they'd struggle to get a Gameboy emulator running on their phone, let alone setup their own PC and natively run another console on it.

That’s a pretty big misrepresentation of what he said and what we know about the situation. The source is all (well sourced) speculation and second hand reports, but saying “Miyazaki said no to Sony’s remake pitch, but then he told them they could remaster it and Sony refused” is nonsensical. If they were willing to spend $$ on a remake why would they decline a remaster? It’s clear Miyazaki doesn’t want anyone’s hands on it beside him and his team.
These are the direct quotes from the source:
[According to Schreier] when Bluepoint pitched a Bloodborne remake, it was told "that the numbers made sense but FromSoftware didn’t want it to happen."…
“Shuhei Yoshida who said that Bloodborne was "the most asked [for] thing" by PlayStation fans, and theorized that its creator was hesitant to let others recreate or modify his work. "My theory is: Because I remember Miyazaki-san, he really, really loved Bloodborne, [...] I think he is interested," Yoshida told Kinda Funny Games' Greg Miller last year, "but he’s so successful, and he’s so busy, he cannot do [it] himself, but he doesn’t want anyone else to touch it. That’s my theory. And the PlayStation team respects his wish. That’s my guess."
Then the direct quote from Miyazaki about it is a complete deflection, in no way does this quote indicate it’s up to Sony. He gets asked point blank about it and goes “oh it’s not mine. I see why people want them on new hardware, but that isn’t the end all be all”
“Unfortunately, and I've said this in other interviews, it's not in my place to talk about Bloodborne specifically," he said. "We simply don't own the IP at FromSoftware. For me personally, it was a great project, and I have a lot of great memories for that game, but we're not at liberty to speak to it."
“think having new hardware is definitely a part of what gives these remakes value," Miyazaki said. "Things you weren't able to achieve on previous generations of hardware, ways you weren't able to render specific expressions - [new hardware] sometimes makes it possible.
"However, I wouldn't say that's the be all and end all. I think purely from a user perspective, modern hardware also allows more players to appreciate all the games. And so, it ends up being a simple reason, but as a fellow player, I think that accessibility is important. I think that can be the driving force between bringing an old game to a new platform."8
u/TheOneTonWanton R5 5600x | RX 6700 XT | 32GB DDR4 7h ago
in no way does this quote indicate it’s up to Sony.
What the hell are you talking about? You quoted someone who isn't Myazaki saying why they think it won't happen as proof that Miyazaki doesn't want anyone to touch it, and then you quote the man himself directly where he points out very clearly that Fromsoft doesn't own the IP. He even says "it's not mine." It's entirely up to Sony what happens with the Bloodborne IP.

As I understand it's both but in different places. Most of the non-gpu logic has been decompiled and recompiled to acrually run without going through Shad as you don't need emulation to do game logic, system loads etc - various system calls the PS4 would support have been replaced with native ones. That is where the performance gains come from, so dismissing this is silly, it is a big improvement over emulating everything on a virtual ps4 cpu and hardware through Shadps4.
However the gpu calls are much more dependent on the PS4's weird architecture, so they are still fully reliant on ShadPS4's emulation of the PS4's gpu, which is what translates to OpenGL.
Not getting in the middle of whether that means it's emulation or native, but it does bypass Shad in ways that are useful for the end result.

Genuine question, how is wanting a port greedy? What am I supposed to have all three consoles? The multi million-billion dollar companies are the ones that have it tough and they cant manage a port but im supposed to drop 4-700$ every few years to keep the graphics "sharp" when their old games clearly works on older specs? Wanting to play the game is no where near the same as wanting to maximize profit off of it.

It’s actually fromsoft who doesn’t want to change it. They’ve said so themselves.

Why do you think there has been so much effort spent on Switch emulation in the last decade?

Bloodborne isn’t because of Sonys greed but to keep good relations with fromsoft since they said anything to do with it they want to work on

It's sort of impressive how Sony intentionally avoided porting the games to PC that seemed like sure fire megahits and instead picked 'everything but'.
Sony: I dunno, Bloodborne, Demon's Souls, GT7? Do people even like those games? I think Predator: Hunting Grounds is gonna be a bigger seller!

Another boring disinformation post by another person not capable of understanding that his favorite game studio is the reason he hasn't 60fps Bloodborne.

Ikr. Sony is greedy, because they don't want to port or remaster BB on PC...to make more money...therefore, they're greedy? (I mean, they are, but this one here is a shitty example) At this point, it's pretty obvious its not Sony's fault, considering they're remastering almost all their's PS4 era games.

i think it'd be cool to come on this subreddit one day and see it mostly about actually PCMR stuff instead of it being flooded so much with crap about playstation.

Funny seeing this sub enjoying this while shitting on AI at the same time. Guess they think generative AI coding and development is different from artwork or whatever. Suddenly, no one cares about the water being spent, or the jobs being lost or whatever that they usually bring up. Fucking morons.

Personally I consider it a good thing if we use AI in a way that undermines corporations. If we do this right we can get them to scrap the whole thing. So whatever you do think of some way you can use AI to fuck them over so hopefully one day the powers that be will decide it wasn't worth it.

Believe it or not, the way a technology is used matters.
Creating wheat that doesn't produce fertile seeds so that farmers are forced to buy new seed from you every season instead of planting their own crop? Bad! Creating a cultivar of rice that has vitamins normal rice lacks to reduce malnutrition in countries that rely almost entirely on rice as a staple food? Not bad!
Stealing art en masse to let billionaires profit from artists' appropriated talent without credit or compensation? Bad. Decompiling a game to run on a platform that it would never be released on otherwise? Not bad!

I'm sorry, but it sounds like you're trying to introduce "nuance" into this discussion.
I will now latch onto one of the words or phrases in an example of a point you made, make a strawman argument by misquoting you on it, and get showered in upvotes for it by people who both don't understand nuance and want to remain in their worldview that AI is a universal evil with 0 redeeming features.
As this is now a source of reddit karma for me, I will continue such strawman attacks as long it is lucrative for me to do so, even when it seems like I'm a arguing against thin air (it's because I am, nothing you argue technically matters, because I'll just repeat my points forever as long as it gets me updoots, which usually fails when the comment chain gets too deep for people to engage with it).
Thank you for your contribution to my karma.
To begin:
Ahem. AI bad tho

It sounds like the last two things you mentioned are the same. How is decompiling a game and not paying the artists not the same as stealing it?

This doesn't even make sense. the ram prices are high because of companies overinvest into AI and hoard all the ram. that doesn't mean the technology itself is inherently bad with no advantages, it just means companies should fucking stop overinvesting into it hurting us all.

These reverse engineering, decomp and jailbreaking projects are some of the first examples of turning AI against big corporations. I'm all for it. Especially if it's directed toward Microslop in the future.

And Indie games. Multiple indie Devs have been hit with their games being stolen simply for releasing a demo.
Thinking this stops at large corporations is incredibly naïve.

We are getting to the point in which they are going to start regulating at OS level and removing functionality on all OS to smart phone level. Linux Distros will be the new "Would you steal a car".

Spite is a powerful motivation.
Also, Sony are welcome to follow the way of the Dreamcast. We don't want to see you pieces of shit sullying the legacy of the PlayStation 1-3 anymore.

This isn't accurate. The "native PC ports" are still based on ShadPS4 and all vibe-coded.

Sony: We are going all digital!
Modders: Understand. Digital PS5 on PC.
