Discussion What’s suddenly going on with jail breaking consoles, console exclusives getting ported to Mac and Windows and so on??
My feed is full of Forza games getting ported to windows and Mac, people playing gamepass on a PS5, ports here emulators there - like where is this boom suddenly coming from?

Companies wanted to stuff AI down our throats so much while jacking up the prices of all PC components that a bunch of guys with the know how said F*** it and decided to put the AI to use.
And I’m loving every second of it. More power to them.

This is the part of the movie where Frankenstein turns on his creator.
Just ask Adobe.

They were both named Frankenstein. It’s canon.
In Bride of Frankenstein, both the monster and the doctor are addressed as Frankenstein.
Much like me and my father share the same last name.

There is no difference between a digital copy and a disc copy for PS4/PS5/XB1/XBSX/Switch 1/Switch 2 games. Both can be revoked easily.

Companies force AI on MY phone and MY computer. Then companies say you don't own what you buy. Go so far to delete games you bought. So I really don't give a fuck if people use the tools forced on us to take the content we do want from the companies that force their will on on us. I own a Sony phone but Sony controls what I can and can't remove so again I don't care if Sony I looses money or its IP.

u/Ok-Drink750 Linux 9h ago
Spite is a powerful modivator, & AI has enabled them to act on it (or more accurately make the AI act on it)
I may hate this shitshow AI has put us in, but it is slightly cathartic to watch these companies get bit by the monster they created.
Even if I refuse to touch these projects on principle, I can atleast appreciate the irony

u/Billib2002 9h ago
AI. From what I understand it can reverse engineer machine code back into a programming language way way way faster than humans, so we basically have access to the source code of every piece of software ever made. This is also the reason that you've been seeing all the crazy "X game in Y game" mods. Modders literally use AI to put code from game X into game Y, effectively creating a new game (Z) that has elements of both games in it
8
u/Sandrust_13 R7 5800X3D | 32GB 4000MT DDR4 | RX 7900xtx 9h ago
Its not only a looot faster, its also a really annoying job to do that, because its like abstract for a human but a machiune is obviously pretty capable at using any sort of programming language or machine code because they run on it themselves.
So its doing the annoying, repetetive and abstract part of the job. Not only making it faster but alot easier/less tedious.

It isn't, and it's a good thing. This industry, especially AAA, is in dire need of a major shakeup. The potential death of proprietary software means business models have to change. Let the industry rewire itself to deal with the new AI reality. God knows we regular folks have to, too.
1
u/MaTr82 47m ago
It's why for me console manufacturers looking at exclusives is a futile effort. It's better to get some slice of the pie, even if it means using a third party store like Steam, than nothing at all. Sony in particular is looking at a long expensive fight against piracy based on their most recent decisions.

Man you don’t know what your talking about. AI is doing A LOT in this field. You do need someone with technical knowledge to prompt it and review output though.

u/Risen_from_ash 3h ago
That’s a bad look. ‘AI ain’t doing shit’ is the most accidentally forward and naive way of admitting you don’t know anything about AI or how people are doing all this stuff.
You should download Codex or Claude Code and give it a lil prompt, as a treat, just to see what it’s like.

Sony went to war with consumers. Microsoft is just as guilty but Sony has been obnoxious about it. Now people are using AI to design tools to emulate the PS5.
Microsoft actual has a pretty easy to access developer mode on Xbox for $20 last time I checked. Also most Xbox games you can play on PC start with.
Basically Sony FAFO.
12
u/degameforrel 8h ago
Microsoft also has much less incentive to keep their games under xbox exclusives. Windows is the primary OS for gaming (yea yea linux is great, I'm talking general stats here don't @ me), so microsoft doesn't really care as much whether you play on xbox or pc. Sony is in a different boat and has been pushing hard for console exclusivity.

Turns out gate keeping the community that is generally much more knowledgable about how technology works was always a bad move.
I guess they fired all their people whose job it is keep tabs on consumer's wants and marketing data. I bet they replaced them with AI too.

u/darklordjames 9h ago
See, instead of letting us buy games by giving them money in exchange for products, Sony stopped shipping games to PC. This is the response.
"Oh, you won't let me pay you? Alright, I'll just make it so everyone can play on PC for free instead."
It's a real boner of a move.

A big reason is how the industry is moving to a subscription/pay to play model. So everyone who has the knowledge to do so, are attempting to save the games while they still can, and making it possible to play ANY game on ANY console that someone owns...
-5
u/Emergency_Bowl_6863 6h ago
*without paying for them for them in the first place or at any point

With how many times company's have released a game, charged for it for years, then decided to shut it down with no compensation towards those who owned the game that could no longer be played, i am pretty sure these company's can take the hit. It wont put them out of buisness!
-6
u/Emergency_Bowl_6863 5h ago
selling games for money is the reason they actually get made in the first place. entertainment is a luxury, not a human right.
3
u/gfmadden330 7800X3D ● Astral 5080 5h ago
Your missing my point.... if they are going to sell a game, for profit, dont decide to remove any way to play it for those customers and expect them to be okay with now having paid, sometimes 100's of dollars, on a game that, cant be played ever again, and not by choice, but by force.
No, with digital downloads and game, its not the game you purchase, its a license to play it, BUT the old games, when you purchased it, it was yours to do whatever you wanted with. They didnt like that, so they had to do away with customers rights in any way they could.

No, with digital downloads and current gen physical games, its not the game you purchase, its a license to play it,

3
u/gfmadden330 7800X3D ● Astral 5080 5h ago
I have a large handful of games, I paid 50+ dating back to the mid 2000's. One inparticular being Motor City Online by EA. Yes it was an online only game, you had to pay for just about anything in the game, as well as a monthly subscription to access the servers. It was an amazing game, but when they decided to shut down the servers, they locked the game down so Noone could ever play again, forcing all the loyal players to loose out on alot.
What is going on now, is more of a knee jerk reaction to everything going digital, and the threat of having games disabled or wiped off the face of the earth because the publisher feel like it. Having no disk/cartridge to a game makes it so you have to be online to play, there are alot of people out there who cant, or wont get high speed internet, so they end up not being able to play said games offline. Thats what all the company's want, they want 100% control over any and all games ever released, so if by chance, someone says something they dont like, they can just pull the license and that said person cant use what he purchased.

There’s many downsides of AI but the one good thing is it is a great equalizer.
Unfortunately that fact alone is why I don’t see the average Joe having access to AI for much longer unless they’re training their own models on their own hardware
8
u/CrackPipeBilly 9h ago
Everything currently being done in the gaming field with AI can be done with a Claude Code subscription which anyone can pay to access. I do think however that all this shit going on is probably going to lead to AI companies locking their shit down a bit more.

Ai has become super powerful. So now accomplishing this is no longer only possible for the highly technically capable but also people that have 5090 money and are pissed that the “biggest game ever” is apparently going to leave them out in the cold. So rather than buy a console they can easily afford, they’re going to pay ai to enable them on the platform they want out of spite. And I applaud those wealthy bastards. I however have a 3070

It won't. The more they want to remove something from the internet, the more people will keep backing it up, patching it, developing it further. Unless of course if they'll take away high end LLMs from the everyday peasant™, which would probably give an aneurysm to AI bros... Honestly, at this point all I want is a cup of tea please.
1
u/jekpopulous2 5h ago edited 5h ago
Nobody is reverse engineering anything with a 5090. Those cards are great for local LLMs like Quen (which is a solid model) but 99% of this stuff is being done with Claude Opus - which is exponentially more powerful than anything you could run locally even with a full rack of 5090s. If you wanna port something yourself just grab a $100 Claude Max plan and head over to the REA Github page. You’ll be reverse engineering in no time.
3
u/flooble_worbler 4h ago
Yes… that’s what I said someone with 5090 money. Not someone with a 5090. The point was someone with spare cash and the inclination

Wow so many people injecting their self-validating narratives into the whole thing. I’m pretty sure it’s simply because AI is capable now and in people’s hands, people experimented, got curious and creative and now it’s snow balling. And then the rest of you spin it and rationalize it with your ideology and bias and narrative which has also snowballed.
You can literally see snowballing spins in Reddit. One person makes a comment, a lot of people like it, then it starts to spread like wildfire and it becomes a whole narrative. Like the whole “spite is a huge motivator”. Stop.

When a game is put out you dont get much human readable access to the code at its source. AI is able to translate it backwards and fully understand it. Then it can do whatever you want with it.

I'm curious to see what kind of legislation the corporate world starts pushing for in response to this.
They can't let this continue, because they need to maintain ownership of their products to make money.
AI is already losing a gazillion dollars per second, so any additional friction to using it will be a hard sell - so mandatory ID verification or similar sign-up restrictions don't sound like a likely outcome.
Maybe some increased punishment for intellectual property infringement? Additional crackdowns on piracy websites? Punishment for hosting related information? ...Most of those will only be enforceable in the countries where the legislation is passed, I believe?
Restricting AI access from personal use to be more business-only? This seems like a move in the opposite direction of their business model.
I don't see a path forward where AI remains accessible to the public and still pushed towards some theoretical future profitability...

u/XRaiderV1 -Ryzen 5 7600X 50m ago

The most ironic part of this is that companies sunk over a trillion dollars forcing this onto us in hopes of profit just for the public to use it to gut their income further. In an effort to replace us they are making themselves unnecessary.

Real reason we now have consoles that have architecture that is closer to a computer than ever before thus combined with the power of AI can create executables and files needed for the software to be read and used by PCs much easier than in the past.
-1
u/SC_W33DKILL3R 5h ago
People spending thousands on AI, but really is getting access to a supercomputer which will attempt a task you set it without all the hassle of programming a supercomputer.
So not AI in itself but access to massive amounts of compute.
5
u/wickeddimension 5700X, 4070 Super 2h ago
Super computer? You can do a lot of these things on a few thousand dollar system locally. Just takes way longer. Something like a 5000-8000$ Mac Studio with a lot of ram can run very competent coding models. Not Opus 5.5, but you don't need that for everything.
Still a lot of money, but not even in the same realm as a super computer.
1
u/SC_W33DKILL3R 2h ago
Na you can’t, the models being used are frontier models that you could never run locally and were burning through millions of dollars of tokens. Otherwise the universities in question would just have bought a few racks of NVIDIA servers and done it without having to use them.
1
u/wickeddimension 5700X, 4070 Super 1h ago
Na you can’t, the models being used are frontier models that you could never run locally and were burning through millions of dollars of tokens.
For what? Creating a wrapper for Xbox One software to run on Windows so you can play Forza on PC doesn't cost millions of dollars of tokens in the slightest nor does it have to be done by a frontier model.
Otherwise the universities in question
What universities.
I feel like we aren't talking about the same things here.

u/TwistStrict9811 2h ago
"So not AI in itself but access to massive amounts of compute" oh dear lord the cope is unreal lmao
2
u/SC_W33DKILL3R 2h ago
That’s what AI is. Even the maths problems that have been solving are hundreds of agents iterating over the same problem again and again. Just massive amounts of compute being used, into the tens of millions of dollars, to eventually reach the answer. If the intelligence could work out the answer on its own, it could have solved it without all that compute. We have had supercomputers for years solving the hardest of maths problems, such as modelling nuclear weapon detonations, there was just a human element coding it.
1
u/TwistStrict9811 11m ago
lmao you literally explained the difference yourself. supercomputers needed humans to program the solutions. AI can figure out how to approach problems on its own. if it was just raw compute, why weren’t supercomputers doing this decades ago?
