given how its got a DNI (Do not inventory) tag on it, its probably just an empty display riser with zero actual product and is being stored. It probably has little cardboard "tickets" a customer is suppose to take to the register for the actual product. Source: worked at Sam's Club for 20+ years.

I know, I saw it and with the whole news with the 5090 wanted to share it as a meme

What news?

There stopping production on the 5090 to make it only for AI

Glad I got my 5070ti when I did then. Fuck me.

Except their just rumors that Nvidia has already discounted.

22

u/ThatsALovelyShirt 1h ago

You're being naive if you think they're ever selling 5090s again, despite what they claim. At least in their current form. They're either going to use lower quality binned cores with 24 GB or just produce a small fraction of what they used to produce to claim it's not technically out of production.

6

u/flamefox237 2h ago

Okay, I dont keep up on news that much

Not a rumor. 5090s aren't even listed on their website and listed on all microcenter locations as "not carried" they're EOL. Why sell a 5090 at 3k when you can use the same parts on a 16k Blackwell card.

1

u/FluxVelocity i9-13900K | 4090 FE | 64GB 14m ago

They're only delisted from the US website, other regions still have it listed.

1

u/DonutHoles4Ever Mac Heathen 8m ago

Source on NVIDIA denying it?

Like they've done it in the past and a rumor turned out to be true, 6 months later. But like what's the source for it being denied on 5090s today?

u/Glittering_Air_7942 3h ago

Source: I work at Costco currently and this guy is 100% correct. generally anything small and worth more than $300 or so, Costco will keep in a locked cage and you can take a “ticket” to scan in exchange for your item

1

u/ThatsALovelyShirt 1h ago

Is that the same cage with all the cigarettes?

The only issue I have with that is it’s shrink wrapped. Not sure why it would be if it’s empty.

134

u/pop612 4h ago

Pretty sure everything put on high steel has to be shrink wrapped.

63

u/zbyszekz 3h ago

this right here, in warehouses you have to shrink wrap to the pallet (especially if on sales floor) to abide regulations

23

u/idkuhhhhhhh5 Desktop 1h ago

It’s one of those things that feels really stupid until you see why those regulations exist, usually the story goes a bit like this:

“Worker A placed pallet in position at a height of 55 feet from ground level. An unknown fire sprinkler leak caused the cardboard box to rip, and 16 cartoon anvils fell on top of two workers. Worker A was struck in the toe, causing what was referred to in the court settlement as ‘severe permanent mental distress’. Worker B was struck in the head, instantly dying, but was not wearing a hi-vis vest, so was found to be at fault for the incident.”

Hold Lowes's stack of workers-comp files

1

u/safetyvestsnow 9800X3D / RTX 5090 1h ago

Lowe’s stocks up to a hundred unique items in a single bay, 30 bays to an aisle, thousands of different products to an aisle, for every kind of home improvement project. That kind of retail environment should not be in the same conversation as Costco or any wholesale grocer, lol.

1

u/Short-Ad1032 13m ago

Safety belongs in any conversation. The amount of times associate managers, including the store manager, turned a blind-eye or outright told someone to get topstock in an unsafe manner was mind-boggling for the short time I worked at a location.

2

u/ChrisWsrn 2h ago

Back when I worked for Costco EVERYTHING in the steel higher than 5 feet had to be stretch wrapped.

These False bottom displays are just a cardboard sign over a stack of blond pallets.

26

u/Celorien_the_Psijic 7700K@4.8GHz | 1080Ti SC2 Hybrid 4h ago

Helps to keep it in-place on the pallet. Also you don't want to slap things like the DNI sticker directly on the display, but can easily do so on the wrap.

Shrink wrap is cheap and most stores should have many rolls of it. It's common practice to wrap anything that's being put above ground level.

3

u/collabskus 2h ago

I vaguely remember unloading at a grocery store. The pallets came shrink wrapped and sometimes things would start falling off as soon as I cut the wrap.

22

u/Far_Village7441 4h ago

Large single items are also shrink wrapped to keep it on the pallet better to prevent the item from shifting weight and slipping off the pallet.

9

u/Numerous_Photograph9 3h ago

Shrink-wrap secures anything on the pallet, to the pallet. Empty box may be attached in some way, but most places still require it for their safety standards.

Keeps the grime and dust off.

Stuff sitting in a warehouse for even a few months can get pretty gross.

You leave something intended to be a display in the retail space unwrapped in the warehouse for any length of time and you're going to have to just throw it away.

u/OldSchoolAJ 20xx is the year of Linux! 3h ago

Stuff sitting in a warehouse for even a few months can get pretty gross.

Every day I dust my department. Every day it looks like a house that hasn't been dusted in weeks.

The only reason people think Costco is so clean is because we bust our asses to make sure the members don't see the grime.

u/angrydeuce Ryzen 9 7900X\64GB DDR5 6400\RX 6800 XT 3h ago

All things in the rack need to be shrink wrapped or banded to the pallet.

Its an OSHA thing.  I worked in warehouses and drove lift equipment for 10 years when I was younger.  Its not just the item itself...its needs to be secure so that something being loaded from the other side doesnt accidentally bump it and knock it down.

There were few things that would get someone fired on the spot as quickly as putting shit up in the air without wrapping or banding it to the pallet.  Seen it happen more than once.  Seen what happens when someone doesnt more than once, too.  S Even something relatively light coming from 20 feet in the air can hurt you.

2

u/OldSchoolAJ 20xx is the year of Linux! 3h ago

Because everything up in the steel gets a wrap. I should know, I have wrapped that exact display for my warehouse. And yes, it is empty.

All it would have would be pullcards anyway. All of the product will be in the MPU lockup.

2

u/Soggy_Cracker PC Master Race i9-14900k RTX 5070ti 32g 6000 ram 2h ago

So the display doesn’t slide of the pallet as they lift and lower it into the air, you goober.

1

u/PlasticBag-ForA-Head 7950X/7900 XTX/64GB 4h ago

Its shrink wrapped because its new and the tickets are still in it? Idk if that could explain it.

1

u/Jacktheforkie Acer Nitro 50 3h ago

To keep it clean maybe? Warehouses are not typically super clean

1

u/UnMeaningnessName 3h ago

Ignore any reply, this is the reason.

Shipping takes a long time and goes through a lot of different climates, the climate that messes with cardboard the most is humid, how to you fix that; wrap it in some plastic that costs less.

1

u/Jacktheforkie Acer Nitro 50 3h ago

Yeah

1

u/UnMeaningnessName 1h ago

You say "yeah" like every person has this ability to think for 2 seconds.

1

u/phoward8020 24m ago

Nope. It’s because everything that goes in the steel has to be shrink-wrapped to the pallet, no matter how light or heavy it is. Standard operating procedure.

Source: I’m a former Costco forklift operator.

1

u/aross1976 3h ago

The only issue we have as when has Costco even sold any but mid tier prebuilts and any standalone Nvidia cards?

1

u/Fabulous_Computer965 2h ago

To keep it dust free for next years rip off.

1

u/Gindotto EMULATION HALL MONITOR 1h ago

You typically can’t throw stuff “up in the steel” unless it’s shrink wrapped. Keeps anything from wobbling around causing accidents while loading unloading. And yes, even something that’s just a display box, if it’s going up, it’s gotta be wrapped.

-1

u/Tomytom99 Idk man some xeons 64 gigs and a 3070 3h ago

I'm taking offense to all the people calling stretch wrap shrink wrap

1

u/eamondo5150 2h ago

Costco also loves their chep pallets.

If that had any sort of serious weight to it, they probably wouldn't put it up there on that plain old 4 way. The skid beside also looks to have cardboard displays on it, and it's also not on a chep.

Sometimes, high-value displays like that have merchandise shipped separately and may have some 3rd party come in for setup and maintenance.

I used to do that for Crossmark in a few Sam's Club locations.

There nothing in that display it's only the floor display hence the DNI tag on it. Stuff of value is stored behind locks at all time. That display would only have little cardboard cards you scan and then get to ask for it afterwards

1

u/aross1976 2h ago

Yeah but not for the price It's not as good for AI as a GPU, it's ddr5 not 7 Bandwidth is much slower than a GPU, If I had the choice I would get a 5080 24gb instead For that price.

1

u/DonutHoles4Ever Mac Heathen 5m ago

Right but the point is, you can run AI for LONGER on this thing without needing to use your 5080, that you're playing video games on.

Not super compelling, 99.9999% of redditors wouldnt know what to do with AI anyways. Otherwise they'd be employed.

Being someone who literally makes thousands of these fixtures for all sorts of different consumer electronic companies that go into Sams Club and Costco every year -- coming into this comment section is kind of a trip. For some reason I'm shocked that a lot of you have no idea this is an empty display with no product in it.

In fact I'm in the middle of a 630 rollout of the "holiday edition" of the display for Bose QuietComfort headphones. Should finish up on Wednesday. Look for the fixture and now you know they came from me.

2

u/aahrg 4790k, 1070 FTW, 16gb ddr3, 1TB SSD, 3TB HDD 2h ago

The display case itself is probably owned by Nvidia or an advertising/merchandising company, and they are paying Costco to place them in stores. Inventory is a legal financial statement so you only claim the product you own. There'll still be a paper trail of shipping/receiving documents, "non-inventory" report, etc.
