Tech Support Display death?

Post image

I've had this Asus TUF A15 FA506ui laptop for about 5 years (built myself a proper gaming pc feb 2025).

This started a couple weeks ago, when I boot it up only the top half of the display works. I manage to sign in and after a couple minutes the bottom half flickers between working and a frozen image of what was previously displayed.

It usually starts to work normally after about 4 to 5 minutes.

Has anyone encountered this before?

• (CPU): AMD Ryzen 7 4800H

• (GPU): NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6

• Display: 15.6-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS-level panel with a 144 Hz refresh rate

• (RAM): 16GB DDR4 3200MHz (expandable up to 32GB/64GB via two SODIMM slots)

• Storage: 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD

might be the display cable and/or one of the connections.

Normally that is due to the ribbon cable that goes around the hinge getting too much wear and tear.

Some of those cables are pretty much hardwired to the screen tho, so same difference as "display death" unless maybe you can micro solder.

Usually you'd just replace the screen if the display cable is literally part of it and not plugged in to it.

It is a bit strange that it fixes itself, but not if you are moving the laptop.

Does the problem recur if you move the laptop after it fixes itself?

If not... way above my paygrade.

I've tried moving the screen back and forth during and afterwards to see if it would happen again but no luck. It seems to be exclusively on boot after longer periods of being powered off.
