Jak and Daxter has a native port called OpenGOAL, the entire trilogy is playable on PC (1 and 2 are fully playable, 3 is as well but it's not considered "done"). Also not done by AI, it's been in the works for years.

Quiver Launcher is a great way to launch many of these ports, it manages the github files and such. You do have to provide your own legal copy of the game file for each one.

From dumb administrations, yes probably.
But to anyone else, this is a clear indication that the PC market doesn’t want any of their shenanigans.
Cloud gaming will never completely replace PC, companies that haven’t figured that out yet needs to change leadership.

A bunch of pissed off gamers have toppled the console market and I love it. You will own nothing and love it, ok, you all will sell nothing and be fucking miserable.
0
u/Affectionate_Owl_619 1h ago
Except if they sell nothing, they’ll stop making games and we’ll all be miserable
16
u/TheSmuggleronni 1h ago
Given the current states of games and disastrous new games this last 2 years I say we'll be just fine.I don't think we are losing much
3
u/nakula108 44m ago
AAA games largely suck ass anyway. People who actually make good games will continue to sell them on steam, it has been proven many times
1
u/tito9107 17m ago
There's an entire backlog of games to play even if "they" stop making games today.

Depending on the game. Most of them have their own project site so just google the name of desired game + pc port

The Legend of Dragoon port (Severed Chains) was done by actual people before any of the AI ports started coming out. That's the only exception I'm aware of.

2
u/StrawHat89 1h ago
Jak and Daxter and Twilight Princess (Dusklight) were done without AI too. It's a shame you have to look hard to find recomps done by dedicated people, but they are there still.

u/criticalt3 7900X3D/RTX 5080/32GB RAM 1h ago
I get AI le bad but at least we're getting something of value that will last for however long the internet does. Unlike corpos who are the real ones using dangerous levels of resources so they can embed a shitty chat bot in their website designed to replace their entire workforce.

2
u/Real_RaZoRaK 7m ago
That's an interesting and scary take. I fear you might be right. I'm enjoying this boom as much as anyone but I'm afraid for the inevitable retaliation that's coming.
0
u/CASpider Linux 30m ago
Offer the game on Steam and people buy it.
Attempt to lock it to cloud-streaming only is a great way to Stadia yourself.
0
u/LengthMysterious561 23m ago
For enthusiasts, sure. Most of the market is casuals who I think won't care. I think popular franchises going cloud exclusive will be enough to get the masses to switch to it.
6
u/ParanMekhar 1h ago
Yeah. Laugh now because this is gonna push companies to invest to streaming
1
u/Adavanter_MKI 1h ago
That was inevitable. They don't want us to control anything and have been steadily moving towards that goal for awhile. Microsoft tried it too early. Sony felt now was the right time and given all it's defenders... they seem to be right.
Just look at car subscriptions for seat warmers, adobe and CEOs outright saying it's the goal. Netflix basically said it's waiting for a post console world.
1
u/Vegetable_Safety 1h ago
My social contract with gaming companies is a one-time purchase of a complete game, no preorders, no subscriptions
I didn't start buying DLC when they began intentionally partitioning games into incomplete packages. Or when they started offering limited editions. Or any number of promotional items, horse armors, or twitch drops. Anything that's intended to produce fomo or punish you for not paying more than base cost for their product, just makes me stop buying their games
Come to think of it I don't believe I have a single game that Epic, Bethesda, Ubisoft, or Treyarch has designed in the past 15 years
0
u/RealHotFella 35m ago
Multiple companies tried streaming, it just doesn't work as a business model.
8
u/spider-jedi 2h ago
Why do PC gamers care. We have been digital for a long time now.
2
u/future_pirate 1h ago
I would say the controversy is more over ownership and the ability to play older games without re-buying them than about physical media in and of itself, PC's digital games tend to do better than consoles on both those fronts.
1
u/CASpider Linux 26m ago
Yeah, games I bought over 25 years ago just work on my latest PC. Not having to rebuy things you already bought is a major reason people feel the deal is fair.
You buy it, you can play it forever.
2
u/future_pirate 22m ago

Most of these vibecoded ports aren't that good tho. If they tweaked the code at all to optimize it after the fact that would be better.

I wish the steamdeck was better. I hate that my number one gaming platform is switch 2 because it is so portable and convenient with great performance and easy to use. My pc is dusty and has been for the first time in over 30 years
3
u/ImportanceHour5983 2h ago
I was thinking of getting a steam deck? Why is it bad compared to the switch?
6
u/BiscuitAdmiral May frame rates be high and temperatures be forever low! 2h ago
Because of its age its lagging behind other portable PCs. Before the price hike it was reasonable but now it's just not.
3
u/LunchTwey 2h ago
It's really old and doesn't run modern games amazingly. It was fine before because it was cheap, but now the cheapest model is $789. Please do not spend that much on a steamdeck. Either go Switch 2 or get another PC handheld that actually has the performance to justify that pricetag
3
u/StrawHat89 1h ago
It's weaker and the lack of DLSS hinders it in comparison to the Switch 2. There are other PC handhelds that are stronger but they're also significantly more expensive than the Steam Deck which is also more expensive thanks to the AI bros eating all the RAM and storage. It sucks, I would still definitely suggest the Steam Deck if it weren't for the price increase, because you can still play a lot of your library on it, especially indies.
2
u/CASpider Linux 22m ago
It's pretty great, in my opinion. Then again, I don't try to play AAA games on it.

I’ve been wanting to try some ports. But I dunno how or where to buy the original game files of a 25 plus year old game.
And then putting the files into the emulator or whatever.

Can we stop calling these "native PC ports"? They're nothing close to native PC ports. A native PC port would be rebuilding the game from the ground with DirectX pipeline in mind, native DX controller support, and a whole host of other things. Rejiggering it to a semi equivalent call isn't a port, its JIT emulation with the work done upfront.

u/patlefort Specs/Imgur here 7m ago

- That's piracy
- I don't think we have a right to comment on 'killing discs' situation, your Steam account games cannot be traded ? Could they ever be traded ? no. Actually Valve as the original model for digital distribution is what these other companies followed implementing digital store.
3
u/TehWRYYYYY 1h ago
I don't remember hearing about Valve removing things from people's libraries. I'm sure they could though.
2
u/XIRisingIX Linux 1h ago
Sony has made it abundantly clear that purchases of games via the PlayStation ecosystem does not equal ownership.
If purchasing does not equal ownership, piracy is not theft.

Anyone can still have a disk drive. Anyone can also purchase a DRM free version of a lot of games via GoG and put the install on a CD/DVD/BLU-RAY.

u/BarnesTheNobleman 2h ago
I’m actually going out of my way to order a Blu-ray reader / burner for my PC
2
u/Quasar_lazer 2h ago
You’re also not forced to buy and manage all of your games through the Microsoft store on PC making it a non issue.
2
u/Sufficient-Turn-7799 1h ago
Not to mention it's easier to create your own physical copies of games in all kinds of data storage media like external hard drives, USB thumb drives and even M discs if you really want to go hard of preservation and ownership.
0
2
u/jamesnada R7 5700X | RTX 3070 | 32GB 4000mhz 2h ago
It's not just about the discs, but the storefronts and the rights to the games as well. If I buy a game on Steam, or even better GoG, I have that game in my library. Even if that game is delisted or removed from the storefront I can still install it (bar some rare exceptions).
Sony has, on several occasions, removed the ability to play games in players libraries due to "accidental restrictions". And now they're stopping disc production after showing they can remove purchased products from your library
Sure, PC games haven't had regular physical copies in 10-15 years, but when you "own" the game on PC you have significantly more rights than on console.

I've never had a digital game get revoked from my PSN account. I have however:
Gotten games revoked on steam. (They were removed from my library)
Gotten PS4 disc games revoked. (Was a false positive so SIE restored it, however PS5 uses the same DRM system)
0
u/KakarotAlter 1h ago
That;s not true at all. I have multiple Mortal Kombat games that have been delisted on PS3 that I can still DL. Also I still have Deadpool.
