I'm doing a new build. Not because I want to but because I have to. My current PC is failing and it's an old beast.

My new build will be glorious. GLORIOUS I TELL YOU. I start in 4 weeks time. I have but one thing standing in my way: what the shit is up with the GPU market right now.

So at first I was like "a gtx 970 should do nicely" and then the whole vram thing and just general hatred and so I said "ok, ok, I can spare another $120-$150 for the 980". But I started looking at the specs. Slightly higher clock speed, more shading units, 0.5GB more Vram. It's definitely the better card, but the hardware difference is not worth $120-$150 more dollars. The bang for buck, as in FPS for dollars, is wayyy better on the 970 than the 980. But I will be seen as a fool for buying a 970 now. After the storm over its vram and general discontent.

Then there is the 980 Ti. It's irresponsible. My buying the card is irresponsible. Do I have the cash? Yes. Should I be spending that much really? No. I will be late on rent sort of situation for a 980 Ti... But it almost sounds worth it.

Ughh. What do I do?!

TL;DR - 970 is hated, 980 isn't worth the price, 980 Ti would be an irresponsible buy. What do?

I was in the same position. I bought the Ti and haven't looked back. It's a beast of a card and will keep me happy for a few years.

A couple ten's cheaper than the 980 Ti and I don't get physx and I drop 200mhz as well as about 15-20 frames? No thanks. If I'm spending $650+ I want the real deal.

The only thing the Fury has going it for it in comparison to its competitor card right now is that it definitely runs cooler.

100$ cheaper. Mhz doesn't correlate to performance, otherwise my 8350 would be faster than a 5960X. PhysX is as dead as 3D.
10-15 fps difference at most.

Well, I bought a 970 back in November, and actually just today sold it and bought a 980ti.

It depends what you want from your gaming experience. Will you be gaming at 1080p or 1440p? If 1080p a 970 is perfect, the vram won't affect 1080p gaming. If 1440p, a 970 will still run current games, only in a couple years time will it start pushing over 3.5 vram.

So, basically, you need to determine what you're looking for. Price/performance/longevity wise, the 980 ti is the best, as the current price/fps is almost on par with 970, and the 6gb will last for years.

Congrats on the new gpu!

I will mostly be doing 1080 for now. I was thinking along the lines of what you said. If I get the 970 with everything around me starting to switch over to higher resolutions I might just have to buy it and accept the fact that in two years I might need to upgrade. With the 980 Ti it might keep chugging for 4 years ya know?

Get what ya pay for I guess. I think I'm gonna just go for the 970 and when the new Pascal architecture is out and has some good cards for it ill take another look into the market at that time.

Thank you :)

Thanks brother!

Yeah I mean, at 1080p a 970 will be killer, mine was giving me awesome performance at 1440p. The only problem is how long you want it to last. 1440p is quickly becoming industry standard, and my guess is that in 2 years the big games will be pushing the 970 beyond what it can do well at 1440p. Your plan is pretty solid, and I think the new architecture will be really exciting.
