Could someone explain to me this. When in SLI/Crossfire two (for this example the person is going to only use two GPU) GPU have 4 gb of ram each. So the total amount of Vram is 8GB, but for some reason that is not how it works?

My question is why is having that scenario is not as beneficial as having one 8 GB card...

I would love it if someone could explain this to me, I don't even know how to word this question properly :(

5

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '15

For the way SLI and Xfire works as of right now, the VRAM is mirrored between them as part of how the communication works. It means that each GPU is only capable of retrieving and steaming from its pool of VRAM in that case 4GBs this means that GPU1 cannot send data to GPU2's VRAM as a result since the connection wouldn't allow for such interaction.

Each GPU is synced as you why this is more beneficial than a single GPU, well 2 GPUS are working on 1 task. It is the same as splitting a bunch of wood, the job can get done well enough with one burly dude and an Axe, but add another one and you have a lot more muscle to move more wood at a time.

You lessen the amount of work that has to be done using two GPUs that are synchronized.

As a side note DX12 promises to allow pooling of VRAM so multiplicative VRAM increase could be possible with DX12 and Vulkhan.

I'm doing a new build. Not because I want to but because I have to. My current PC is failing and it's an old beast.

My new build will be glorious. GLORIOUS I TELL YOU. I start in 4 weeks time. I have but one thing standing in my way: what the shit is up with the GPU market right now.

So at first I was like "a gtx 970 should do nicely" and then the whole vram thing and just general hatred and so I said "ok, ok, I can spare another $120-$150 for the 980". But I started looking at the specs. Slightly higher clock speed, more shading units, 0.5GB more Vram. It's definitely the better card, but the hardware difference is not worth $120-$150 more dollars. The bang for buck, as in FPS for dollars, is wayyy better on the 970 than the 980. But I will be seen as a fool for buying a 970 now. After the storm over its vram and general discontent.

Then there is the 980 Ti. It's irresponsible. My buying the card is irresponsible. Do I have the cash? Yes. Should I be spending that much really? No. I will be late on rent sort of situation for a 980 Ti... But it almost sounds worth it.

Ughh. What do I do?!

TL;DR - 970 is hated, 980 isn't worth the price, 980 Ti would be an irresponsible buy. What do?

Fury

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '15

A couple ten's cheaper than the 980 Ti and I don't get physx and I drop 200mhz as well as about 15-20 frames? No thanks. If I'm spending $650+ I want the real deal.

The only thing the Fury has going it for it in comparison to its competitor card right now is that it definitely runs cooler.

1

u/Lustig1374 Team Red Jul 14 '15

100$ cheaper. Mhz doesn't correlate to performance, otherwise my 8350 would be faster than a 5960X. PhysX is as dead as 3D.
10-15 fps difference at most.

u/PotatoMush http://imgur.com/3AjJUeq( Jul 14 '15

wait a bit longer and buy the 980Ti?

Why are people buying unlocked i7's I'm currently building a PC and all that's left it to buy the CPU. isn't an i7 overkill on its own not being unlocked? (I ask because I'm thinking about getting a regular i7. Change my view I guess?)

1

u/mtn_dewgamefuel R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | Win11 IoT LTSC Jul 15 '15

It's overkill. If you're just going to be gaming, get an i5. If you're absolutely sure you need it, get an i7. If you have the money, just get the unlocked version of whichever you choose and a compatible motherboard.

2

u/xD512 http://imgur.com/a/7f6Qx Jul 15 '15

Unlocked basically means you can OC the CPU more easily if you have the MoBo for it. Basically every Z or X MoBo is capable of taking advantage of the "k" CPUs and the H MoBos aren't.

If you just want to play games an i5 definetly is enough for your needs, I'd personally get the unlocked version (i.e. 4690k) and a Z MoBo to be able to OC the CPU. The money you save that way can be used for a better video card or other higher quality components.

I plan on just gaming really. I was planning on buying a Intel Core i7-4790 I have an Asrock Z97 Extreme3 motherboard. I also plan on hooking up 3 monitors

2

u/xD512 http://imgur.com/a/7f6Qx Jul 15 '15

Just go for an i5 4690k. Basically the same CPU without Hyperthreading and less cache. But you can OC it with the board you wanted to buy.

1

u/Punker_22 Intel i7-4790K/ EVGA GTX 980ti FTW/ 8GB/ 120 GB SSD/ 2TB HDD Jul 15 '15

I already have the board haha I wanted the i7 because of the hyperthreading. I won't notice any difference between an i5 and i7 in gaming? Also, will the stock CPU cooler work to OC the i5, or will I need to buy another part

Why are there multiple stickies?

0

u/TheAppleFreak Resident catgirl Jul 14 '15

Some may attribute it to "the work of the admins," but I'll tell you what it really is: dark magic and witchcraft. Using the unholy dark powers of AutoMod, I have bent the will of the sticky system so it is now under my complete and total command! I can now even sticky link posts!

A GOD AM I

2

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '15

Allowing more mod relevant information to exist at once. IE this daily thread and still have something else we wish to promote. Honestly, it is a great option to have. A mega Thread won't snuff out any other sticky we might want to keep up anymore this way.

21

u/eegras http://pc.eegras.com Jul 14 '15

New change in Reddit. Subs can now have two stickies, which is super helpful. Lets us sticky this thread plus something else we want everyone to see, for example.

5

u/kunstlich Ryzen 1700 / Gigabyte 1080 Ti Jul 14 '15

A new feature rolled out earlier allowing two stickied threads instead of one; it allows having one 'permanent' sticky and one that regularly changes. Which is good, because these simple question threads were sort of hit-and-miss until yesterdays one was stickied and had over 200 responses.

I have a question about my computer's hardware. I recently bought The Witcher 3. I really enjoy it and my computer doesn't have too much trouble running it on high. That being said I can sometimes get down to around 30 fps. While I don't mind that so much, it got me thinking. What is holding my computer back more, my CPU or my GPU? I have an i5 4690k 3.5 ghz processor and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 750 graphics card. I had someone else build this computer for me and now I want to understand it better so that I can continue to upgrade it and do it myself.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '15

Your 4690k is plenty quick, but your GTX 750 is a major bottleneck. I'd recommend a GTX 970 for $250-300 if you want to stick with Nvidia, or an R9 290X/R9 390 (which are a bit too pricey imo).

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '15

A mod is an nvidia fanboy! Burn him!

(this is gonna get me shadowbanned isn't it.)

2

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '15

Well with 970s hitting $250...

Nothing but a good deal imo.

Also we can't shadowban, only the reddit admins can.

New graphics card time, upgrading from 650Ti that has died on me.

280x or 380 ?

I've heard the 300 series has a lot of issues at the moment (I really need it to be stable out of the box), but also that the 200 series uses a lot more power and is really old architecture now. They're both around my budget. Thoughts?

Not really a question but more a comment:

I have found that switching my windows theme to best performance rather than best appearance has made a noticeable difference in certain games such as GTAV, CIV5, and the Borderlands series.

I'm not exactly sure why but I believe it has something to do with the Aero Peak program that Windows uses as an overlay which can sometimes cause errors with other overlays such as Steam or Rockstar Social Club. You can change this by: (win7) >start>control panel>system>advanced system settings> then click the "settings" button under the performance section and click "adjust for best performance" but make sure to check "smooth edges of screen fonts" before exiting as this will keep text legible.

Keep in mind this will give your PC a Windows 98 look/feel but with all the performance of Windows 7.

Cheers.

Why an FLV video file (recorded with OBS) converted to MP4 just looks gray in Sony Vegas preview? The same happens if I try to record directly in MP4 on OBS.

What's the best antivirus to install on my new system right now?

Also, I really like cities skylines, Pokemon, skyrim, and league of legends. What are some games that I should consider getting on steam. I haven't been an avid PC gamer before (just play league on my crappy laptop), but my new system is gonna be beast and should easily handle more challenging games (it has an i5 and r9 290).

Windows 8.1 has built-in antivirus that's pretty good. Just use that and common sense, you'll be fine.

The Witcher 3 is fantastic. You'll definitely like it if you like Skyrim.

Should I invest in a mousepad? I'm a college student that has a gaming notebook, and I am doomed to a year of shitty desks and what not, but I don't know if a 10$ mousepad is really worth it.

1

u/catsasshole Jul 15 '15

A mousepad would definitely be worth it if you are playing on inconsistent and varying surfaces to improve tracking. Just the slick, consistent feel alone is worth it IMO.

6

The graphics work i will be doing will be more of a hobby that I am looking to develop into a professional standard.

My plan was to get this monitor to use while I develop my trade and eventually get monitor closer to the top of the range when I start making enough money. Bonus is then I can use this dell monitor to replace my current second screen.

It's a great monitor however the IPS panel is... old. Most of the new IPS monitors will actually look much better. I've had the U2412M for 4 years, I did some new builds for my family and bought them some of the new Dell IPS 1080p monitors ($150-$200) and all of them look much better than mine.

I think it's partly due to the low pixel density (pixels are LARGE) and the gross Anti-Glare Coating on the U2412M. All of the Dell IPS monitors have slight ghosting, by the way. I tested on all of mine and even with Overdrive on my U2412M the newer IPS panels match it.

Personally unless you absolutely want 1200p over 1080p I would go with one of their more recent and probably cheaper panels as IPS tech has improved since 2011.

I did a build about a year ago, first time since I bought pre-built before. I did a really shitty job of cable management and organization of the case. Are there any risks involved with removing everything, and reorganizing the build? Would I have to use the same ports on the motherboard as well?

3

u/Jakomako (i5 4690k + GTX 970)Corsair 350D Jul 14 '15

There's an inherent risk in doing anything with your PC's components, but it's a small one unless you're stupid and careless. The only ports you could possibly switch up are SATA ports and it doesn't matter as long as you use the speed ports.

1

u/hypersprite Ryzen 9 9950X | RTX 5090 Jul 15 '15

Sometimes certain cards can not be as optimized as others for certain games. MY advice would be to use the Nvidea Gforce Experiance and optimize your games. Also make sure that you have the most up too date video drivers. I cant stress enough how much of a difference having up to date drivers can have. If you still having issues it may be that your card is just struggling. You have a 760 so its not crazy powerful. IF you wanted to increase performance you could also place the games on the SSD in a new steam library to increase performance. If you defiantly want to increase performance you should consider upgrading to a new card.

I'm looking at moving back to a PC from a Mac. Would the better thing be to save until I have enough for a complete higher end system or buy a mid-range with expansion capabilities?

And how valid do those expansion capabilities stay (or how do you avoid a "fad" type card/chip/format)?

2

u/Jakomako (i5 4690k + GTX 970)Corsair 350D Jul 15 '15

I built a rig with an i3 and a GTX 760 about 18 months ago and just recently upgraded to an i5 and a GTX 970. It was great. I could play anything I threw at it, but I still had room for improvement. Mid-range builds tend to be underrated on here because everyone wants that cookie cutter i5 + 970 set up, but weaker components are still pretty damn capable. Not really a big deal that you can't turn shadow quality up to max and run antialiasing and such. Games are still fun and look damn good on medium/high settings.

I'd wait for Skylake to come out at this point. That will give you a better upgrade path if you do like me.

2

With your bare fingers?

Not a biggie. PCB is pretty resilient, finger grease won't do any damage. If you scratch a trace though, with a screw driver by accident or something, you can be in pretty big trouble.

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '15

General rule of thumb is most pre-builts are rip offs in some capacity. They will usually load you up with an i7 and some measly GPU while still making you pay a pretty hefty price for it.

Even if they include a reasonable GPU and CPU it is not uncommon to see these be way over what it would coust to just get the parts yourself.

If you are in the US Canada region, I would see about NCIX's pre-building service. They only charge an extra 50USD on top of parts and then build it for you. It is one of the better pre-built packages I have seen.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '15

I was looking for a more specific answer to the original question compared to just a generalization of pre-built PC's. Does that one fall into that generalization?

What should I look for/shy away from? I play KSP, GTAV,CSGO,Skyrim, Dayz, and others. Any help on where to start looking and what to look for would be great. Why are games just ported onto PC and not just made for it then ported on consoles? I don't understand this concept too well.

1

u/xD512 http://imgur.com/a/7f6Qx Jul 14 '15

I think that's because it's easier to create a game that works fine on consoles and then add some extra graphical fidelity for the PC port than the other way round.

1.Should I upgrade my GTX 770 4GB or wait if all I want is gaming at 1080p/60fps? 2. Is the 770 considered a high-end or mid-tier card (it doesn't really matter but I'm kind of curious)?

1

1: it's probably okay for 1080p60 for at least another generation, especially with 4gb of vram

2: mid tier, a little bit better than the equivalent 960.

Alright, so how important is an IPS (e.g Asus MG279Q there are others too) display and what are the advantages to G-Sync rather than leaving it off by default?

1

u/Lennardson Jul 14 '15

IPS means that the monitor has more colour which increases the visual quality immensely, g-sync and free sync make the display smoother ect. g-sync is made by Nividia while free sync is by amd. They usally work well on low fps and work better with a gpu from the same company.

1

on a serious note tho, i watched Linus' video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzHxhjcE0eQ which seemed pretty interesting, and since it

usually works well on low fps

surely that won't matter in your situation.

either way I doubt that the visual quality increase will be that dramatic, oh well!:)

First of all you should think about the things you'd like to do with the laptop (i.e. gaming [specifically which games and their system requirements], editing or just browsing/office stuff) and then take a look at your budget.

With those two things in mind you should take a look at subreddits like /r/SuggestALaptop (credit to /u/ak474000, didn't know that one existed).

Unfortunately most pre-built PCs either suck or come at a hefty premium. More mainstream brands (Dell, HP, Alienware, etc) tend to stick you with an i7 and a weak GPU, leading to what looks like a powerful setup but is easily beat by a more balanced rig. More custom brands (DigitalStorm comes to mind) have balanced offerings but they come at a significant premium over building it yourself. I'd look around and ask for help, a lot of fellow PCMR brothers would be happy to assist, and there are many videos on building a PC on Youtube that should help you along. It doesn't take that much time and I'd say it's worth it for everyone to have the experience AND save money.

5

u/Jakomako (i5 4690k + GTX 970)Corsair 350D Jul 15 '15

See, people that build custom loops don't give a shit about the extra work to maintain it. It's a labor of love. If you think about it, what's really the point of a custom water loop? It'll get you a couple hundred MHz here and there if you're lucky. It's like asking "should I buy a Camaro or should I build a hot rod?"

So basically I was looking into upgrading my monitor (a S22C350 from Samsung) to make the most of a new GPU. My predicted set up is a GTX 780 coupled with a GTX 980 Ti, with the 780 dedicated to Physx and the rest is left to the 980 Ti. With that in mind, I'm looking for suggestions.

I play a variety of games, currently: League of Legends, Warframe, Path of Exiles, Shadow of Mordor, anything that might come up in the future.

I'm not really well-versed in monitors, but if I'm not mistaken I can at least go for 1440p and 144hz. The rest of the specs, I'm not too sure. My current screen is matte, and I don't think my battlestation is placed somewhere that is friendly to glossy screens. I'm looking for something between 22 and 27 inch.

Now here's the catch: my budget is ~500$, but I want to get the screen during Amazon's sale day, so as much as possible the candidates should be available on amazon.ca or amazon.

Buy it from a well known brand like corsair or NZXT, and they should have a good warranty.

So I'm having a bit of an argument with myself regarding parts upgrades. I can play Star Citizen, but my computer chops up whenever the ships get loaded in during co-op and every time someone respawns during competitive Arena Commander matches. If it's having issues now(Though to be honest, I'm not sure if that's more a poor optimization being that it's pre-alpha, or my CPU), I certainly will have issues during the main game. On top of that, I play a lot of Arma and while it generally handles it decently, it can chop up and get pretty bad during key moments. I'm wondering whether I should upgrade or not.

Currently I have:

i7 3930K Processor (6x 3.2GHz, 12MB L3 Cache)

ASUS P9X79 Pro <- Also is a list of compatible CPUs

GTX 760 x2

I don't know if Star citizen is more of a GPU issue, but I've heard a lot of people say(While doing my research), that Arma bottlenecks at the CPU a lot. Honestly, an answer being: "You don't really need an upgrade" would be fine. I tried using SLI for my GPUs, but it was BSODing the shit out of my computer, so I just use one for my second monitor and dedicate it to PhysX, and the other is for running the main monitor with the games.

Anything I'm overlooking?
