Manager Review
Anyone else experiment with managers to recreate their real-life tactics?
I usually play with the older Klopp version (the one before his latest one). Recently, I've been trying to move away from relying on over-the-top through passes and experiment a bit more with my attacking setup.
Today, I tried using Gerd Müller up front in a withdrawn role while having my LMF, RMF and AMF make forward runs. I had Luis Díaz and Yamal on the wings, and it turned out to be a fun little experiment!
My thinking was to use Müller almost like a false nine. Since he's such a threat, the centre-backs would often follow him when he dropped deeper, leaving some space behind for the other attackers to exploit. Sometimes, my AMF could find that space with a through pass.
I found it quite useful against low blocks and some of the quick-counter setups, especially those relying on long balls. Of course, I'm no expert, and I'm still experimenting with what works for me, but it got me thinking about tactics beyond just following the usual meta.
Do you guys ever use managers differently from their default in-game playstyle, trying instead to recreate how they actually managed their teams in real life?
For example, using Klopp-inspired attacking movements, Pep's positional play, or Mourinho's defensive organisation, even if it means experimenting with formations and player roles that Konami might not have intended for those managers?
Would love to hear what you've tried! Always fun to learn something new from other players.
P.S. Just a F2P player who enjoys experimenting with tactics for fun. Not claiming to be an expert, just curious to hear how others approach the game. Let's keep it a friendly exchange of ideas!
I use flick and peps tactics alot. Also Luis Enrique at times. Basically all Barca managers at this point ! It’s so much better than playing the dead ass meta
That's exactly the kind of thing I was curious about! Feels much more fun to experiment with different tactical ideas than to keep doing the same thing just because it's meta. How do you usually set up your team for Flick compared to Pep?
I see, I also use the dropping amf to cm while defending, although curious about when you said you put 4 up front for pressing when someone is building from back, doesn't that leave your defense or midfield more vulnerable? Or do you stack all 3 defenders and all 3 midfields in the center?
Yea like 3 cbs 2 cmfs and 1 dmf. Let’s say I lose the ball then the formation doesn’t have 4 in the front. It’s only when I attack and am in the final third i exploit it completely. The moment i lost the ball the ss drops back to amf to stablize the mid
i love using pep’s inverted full tactics, overload the centre, pretty effective against the narrow meta, but have to be careful when someone uses a wing formation
I have a few formations I rotate between, very suprisingly even with Klopp and this is definitely one of them! Quite weirdly, it works pretty well for me with Possession Game, which is what I play almost all the time. The central overload is interesting, though. Do you make any adjustments when you come up against someone using wide formations, or do you stick with this setup?
if someone comes up with a wing formation, i use the divisions calafiori in place of bale to provide defensive help and put defensive instruction on cannavaro
i have given him pinpoint crossing who can put in crosses for ibra and dribble past a few to give a simple cut inside pass, basically turning him from madrid bale to spurs bale
Haha 😂 I've got a lot of respect for good defensive play, honestly. There's something satisfying about a well-organised defence! Do you also go for quick long balls up front as soon as you win possession, or do you prefer building your counterattacks more patiently?
I try to do that with all my squads. Someone on here made a great post about Pep and his 235 at City, and I promptly converted my City squad to those tactics. The Inter squad I'm using for the tournament reflects Chivu's 3142, and it's super fun and challenging to play with. Basically each squad I use I try to reflect the formation and tactics of the manager of that squad. Looking forward to getting Mourinho for my Madrid squad and Conte for my Chelsea squad as well.
That's a pretty stacked squad, to be honest! But I really like the idea of building each squad around the manager's actual football philosophy. You mentioned a post about Pep and his 2-3-5 at City — do you happen to have a link? Is it somewhere in this sub? I'd love to check it out!
Just checked and the post was deleted, as was the account of the user who posted it. Basically the setup was a 4213 defensively (below) becoming a 2323 on offense, with both FB moving into a CMF role. Luckily I had the players who had that positional flexibility. Squad isn't overwhelming, but boy is it fun to play with.
There’s this one dude on YT who I follow for his recreations. TENFINITY but he’s more of one game recreations or specific season
There’s also another guy Kenny Efootball, Korean or Japanese who also does same but he’s more in depth with explanations and player playstyles
The central overload is something I try quite often as well! I usually bring out this kind of setup more against specific playstyles, especially when my opponent uses only one AMF. It feels like there's more room to overload the centre in those situations. How has this setup been working for you defensively?
its pretty tough defensively ngl, my players obviously help but i feel it does require a lot of skill
its susceptible to through balls so a tactic i commonly use is pressing the ball holder before a counter attack can be initiated, basically gegenpress, its hard to execute perfectly but with correct timing highly effective, overload is perfect for it as well
The game mechanics has killed the joy of experimenting, it favours certain formations so much that there is no scope for experimenting real formations and actually win with it consistently. 70% of the players are LBC users with 2cf & 1ss or 4222. 29% are QC users with 4222 and 1% use the other playstyles. I still experiment with no Cfs formations n try to recreate a good false nine setup, or the overload style possession where my goal is to make about 150 to 200 passes in one match and make the opponent press
I understand your frustration, and no denying, there are players who just want to win, but as I said I like to enjoy however I can, and the game surely doesn't help when sometimes it favours the opponent so much, no matter what you do, you cannot do anything, but I still try, anyway, I usually put my CFs outwide during the defensive positions to take out the marking defender from the middle.
