So it's been 9 months now since moving back to Philly. As reality sets in, I am a little anxious about selling the NC house and making this permanent, but I am also reminded daily how refreshing it is to be out of the south. I'm not bombarded by MAGA messaging in all my neighbor's yards, or by my coworkers, or randos at the bar. I can walk or transit anywhere. I am comfortable hanging with my other half in public. Philly is pretty great!

u/My_Logan 1d ago
Do it. Came from living in Charlotte - never looked back. Honestly wish I had moved here 10 years earlier!
2
u/wndsofchng06 Flying North for the.... 1d ago
Yes, I often think that I wished I had moved here earlier as well. During my time in North Carolina, I lived in Charlotte, Durham, Beaufort, and New Bern. The only one I consider ever moving back to would be Durham, but only if I had to.
3
u/My_Logan 1d ago
Yeah, I was born in Ohio, but parents moved to South Carolina when I was 7 and I lived all over the south - SC, NC, Georgia, Florida. Lived in Chicago in the middle for college and then moved back to the south. Literally lived 30 years of my life in the south while hating it. So mad I didn't make the move earlier. It's so nice not having to hold your tongue before talking politics or religion. I lived in a high rise in Charlotte and our neighbors ended up being mega MAGA. Like, they were creating a development for "Patriots" and all. God, I love you Philly! Never looking back.

Anyone else a Friday trash pick up and got their trash picked up today instead of tomorrow? Monday was a holiday which usually bumps pick ups back. Anyway thank goodness for a partner who put trash out!

Called outta work today, slept in an extra 4 hours, then spent the day cleaning the house. Nothing like opening all the windows, lighting a candle, getting that mix of fresh air and fragrance, and getting rid of the dust/clutter 😎 good start for the weekend

Anyone else check their Uber tips and compare them to what you actually tipped? My last four are way off.
Two are $3 lower, one is $1 lower, and the fourth is $7 higher. I've also been charged a wait time for every ride despite always being on time and actually waiting for the cars to arrive.
Speaking to a human is impossible with this company.
2
u/wndsofchng06 Flying North for the.... 1d ago
Seems odd that that the total of the lower and the total of the higher are the same....
1
u/6NippleCharlie 1d ago
I tip by the dollar but noticed my CC had cents differences. After looking into specific rides the final charges were all inaccurate.
Not only am I being erroneously charged but I assume the drivers are also being paid incorrectly.

There was a huge streak of posts on social media all week including an actual professional looking advertisement saying that the Philadelphia Eagles were holding open tryouts for people to play for the team until our injured players returned. Now I get to Friday after training all week and I can't find anything about it, it's like someone started a rumor that EVERYONE believed until today, have I just been in the twilight zone all week?
1
u/CUADfan 6h ago
Since Vince Papale people joke every time we suffer a string of injuries that Eagles are having walk-on tryouts

They're doing a ton of road work in my neighborhood this week and they closed off my block, signs and cones and everything. Coming back from dropping my son off at daycare I watched a guy in a minivan drive up to Road Closed sign, get out of his car, move the cones, and then proceed to drive straight through the active work zone. The workers had to move the backhoe all the way down the block and park it in front of the cones so no one else tried it.

I've seen people do this to the fire department as well as if you can't see somethings on fire.

I wish they had done that on my street. Instead they left 9(!) car sized metal plates moving in a suspicious jigsaw formation that people were speeding over all night 😩

I'm really annoyed that the new 40K loredrop was written by AI and I can tell due to my own knowledge of AI (because unfortunately the only way to stay on top of what is AI created and what is not is to study this bullshit). And I really hate that trying to explain as to people who don't use it are just like no they're just false positives and other such excuses when you point out the issues and refuse to believe you. This is basically the writer's version of an video where some cats go downstairs in boxes and everyone is just like wow those cats are so smart and you're just looking at them like really? You can't tell?
Also apparently the AI at my wife's work is causing more trouble because the note taking it does is completely out of line with compliance and too many people are relying on it and not correcting the AI. You know the thing that was supposed to save them time is now costing them more time and money.

Recently got into gaming and played Horizon: Zero Dawn and HOLY SHIT was it amazing. I’m playing Forbidden West now and while it’s not quite as good as the first, it’s still an excellent game. One bad thing is that I have no concept of time when playing them. I figure that I’ll play for a couple of hours and then I look at the clock and 6 hours have passed and it’s 1 am.
1
u/GreatWhiteRapper 💊 sertraline and sardines 🐟 1d ago
Yeah HZD is an amazing game. The moment of realization of "Zero Dawn" was absolutely a top 10 gaming experience for me personally. Like, emotional and just "holy shit"
FW is a downgrade but still good. I do like how one of the bad guys though is just Jeff Bezos.

u/afdc92 Fairmount 8h ago
I’m curious what some of your other favorite games are! I realized that I like playing on story mode (or whatever the easiest mode of a game is) and I love exploring the world and the story over combat. Just checked out Cyberpunk 2077 from the library and think that will prob be up my alley too.

u/East_Apartment 1d ago
Nice! I miss feeling like that about a game. I’ve been playing runescape dragonwilds lately and it’s fun but doesn’t grip me like that

There have been a few recent bomb threats at schools that led to evacuations and I can't find any reporting in the news. Am I missing something or is this just not covered?
*ETA: found this article a few hours after posting. ..

It's been a while since I was a reporter, but the outlets I worked for generally had a policy of not reporting on a bomb threat itself — don't want to encourage copycats. Now, if someone got arrested for a threat, then we'd report the arrest, but the general consensus was that a threat by itself wasn't enough (maybe if it was crazy disruptive, though, like targeting an entire district's worth of schools, but that never happened).
2
u/tabarnak_st_moufette Bella Vista 1d ago
Unfortunately, swatting has been a big issue for schools in the last few years. It’s extremely scary for everyone involved yet it doesn’t get much beyond a shrug of coverage.

I posted in one of these threads a year or two ago about how awful my job was and my coworker that was tickling people.
Now I'm the supervisor in a new place working with 2 guys who are literally everything you could ever want in a coworker.
I guess it really does get better.

u/tabarnak_st_moufette Bella Vista 1d ago
I’d be in jail if I were you. That’s how angry tickling makes me.

u/afdc92 Fairmount 1d ago
Wait- your coworker was tickling people?
10
u/Donger922 Manayunk 🦅🔔 1d ago
He was. I'll post my comment from the thread a year ago:
I wish I was lying. He'll put his hand on your shoulder when he's talking to anyone and that's not a big deal, most people don't mind. Last Tuesday he walked up behind a coworker he was just talking to, and tried to tickle him. The dude who he went after whips around and tells him never to do that again, and his only response is, "you're not ticklish?"
As if it couldn't get any worse, his follow up question to the no he got was, "are your kids ticklish?"
I have begged management to get rid of this guy for almost a year and I thought this would be the last straw. He's bounced around the departments, getting booted out for not working or listening to anyone. They're gonna go over the code of conduct and send him back out.
Not only did they not speak to him about it, they told me to stop bringing it up.

u/wndsofchng06 Flying North for the.... 1d ago
WHOA. I've had plenty of older coworkers, especially when I was down south, that put their hand on your shoulder (not sure what that's about but I just brushed it off to generational differences) but tickling is pretty creepy unless you have a relationship outside of work, and even then.... keep it outside of work. Congrats on the new job!

Street Fighter this weekend! I love and will fully support goofy fun movies like this. I just wish Regal had those Guile popcorn hats. Afterward, hopefully have some time to hit up KOP mall and the marlin bar, followed by wandering overpriced stores and wishing wouldn't it be nice to afford $80 swim trunks?
Saturday I’ll be up at 3:30am to watch GT world challenge. Max will be there. Being a fan of Motorsport means just ruining your sleep schedule once you get in too deep. At least next week F1 is at COTA so ✨✨normal hours✨✨
Has anyone had success with Duolingo to learn a new language? The lessons are fun but I’m wondering how useful it actually is. It's a nice app to get started on, but I'm wondering if anyone has any advice for platforms where I can get more serious about language learning. Babbel? Rosetta Stone? Price isn't so much an issue as much as I want the best possible way to learn....as a complete and utter beginner who hasn't even tried to tackle a new language since around 2010.
5
u/Browncoat23 1d ago
I’m taking language classes and one of my classmates had something like an 800 day streak in Duo. Her assessment was that it was essentially useless for the beginner course we were in, so not the greatest endorsement.
One thing that has actually been really helpful, though it means more time on social media, is just watching a bunch of content on IG and YouTube in the language you want to learn. Depending on how popular the language is, there are a ton of educational content creators, but you can also watch everything from news clips to stand-up, and you can read the comments. It helps to train your ear for listening and to develop your reading skills, plus it’s generally topics you’re actually interested in, so it’ll keep you engaged.
2
u/GreatWhiteRapper 💊 sertraline and sardines 🐟 1d ago
Seems like the majority vote is that Duo isn't great; I'll keep it on my phone just for the thrills but explore all these other options as well.
Watching content like that is SUCH a good idea, tf I didn't even think of that. And it's funny, I was just doomscrolling the other day and watched a content creator video where she said she learned English primarily through Justin Beiber lol.
But that's a solid learning method. I want to watch more Youtube anyway, get away from Reels a bit.

u/Browncoat23 1d ago
I’d recommend looking for “graded readers” or stories aimed at the A1 language level. They’re short subtitled stories in very simple language, and the words are color coded according to how they function in the sentence.
2
u/a-german-muffin Fairmount, but really mostly the SRT 1d ago
Duo's pretty good, but it's built on a slow, incremental process that takes way longer than you would think. It really bogs down once you're into like mid-B1 on the CEFR scale, which is about when you're probably better served with something like Rosetta/Babbel.
5
u/mzorine 1d ago
Duolingo is awful. If you want something similar but that actually teaches you stuff that's useful and non-nonsensical, and that doesn't overload you with gamification, I've enjoyed using Mango. You can access it for free with a library card.
3
u/GreatWhiteRapper 💊 sertraline and sardines 🐟 1d ago
Thank you for putting it into words; Duolingo is very cute and I'm here for how much the India account apparently loves Max Verstappen, but the gamification is overwhelming. There's so many colors and movement.
I'll give Mango a shot. The library once again coming in as a real one.

I've been studying on Italki forever and I'm at the point where I think I could competently hold a conversation with someone I don't know. Italki is paying a teacher who speaks your target language to teach you. My lessons are usually like ~20 bucks for an hour (I'm studying Vietnamese and only that, not sure the costs of other languages), but you get real feedback and usually some homework or at least a list of vocab words and stuff. If you wanna give it a spin, DM and I can send you my referral code. Gets us both like $10 (used to be like $30 lol).
ETA: You select your teacher (all of em have little intro videos), you can hyper-specifically target what dialect you wanna learn, and it's easy to switch teachers if you're not gelling (jelling?).
2
u/GreatWhiteRapper 💊 sertraline and sardines 🐟 1d ago
This is very cool, but maybe a smidge too much for me currently; with something as difficult for me as language learning, I think it's better with a program so I can dilly dally at my own pace. I'm not totally against learning with a teacher one day, but I want at minimum to get the basics down first on my own.
Interesting though, because my partner is Vietnamese and his parents/grandparents are fluent so I've wanted to learn for a while.
1
u/CrashTheBear Dirty transplant, still doesn't say 'jawn' 1d ago
Same. I picked it up during the pandemic and having a teacher really helped with structure and keeping a consistent pace on language learning. It's a really, really tough language and I still don't think I'm anywhere above, like, a child speaking, but at the very least my in-laws are impressed. Ironically, if that's the language you're studying and you decide you want a teacher later, I can give you some recommendations. Good luck with the language learning. I personally really have a lot of fun with it.
I also went with a teacher because I tried Duolingo and not only did they ignore the accents (that are very, very required to know the word you're using in Vietnamese), but the teacher speaks with a Northern accent in Duolingo and I was looking for somebody who is specifically Southern.

u/benifit 1d ago
Learn, no not really. Gain a survival level where I feel comfortable ordering at restaurants and navigating a new city, yes.
I also reccomend going to the library and getting pimmsuler language tapes on CD if you have a disk drive and can rip the lessons to mp3.
1
u/GreatWhiteRapper 💊 sertraline and sardines 🐟 1d ago
Navigating a new city (and using it to fluff my resume, if I'm being honest) is a big reason why I want to learn, as well as just for the love of doing it.
I'll look into a library visit. A disc drive??? Maybe, I think there's an external one somewhere in my apartment that might be up tot he job.

Happy Friday. If anyone's Saturday afternoon is wide open: some of us with Transit Forward Philadelphia are putting on Making All Stops tomorrow, 1 to 3 PM at The Rotunda (40th and Walnut). It's regular SEPTA riders reading short pieces they wrote about riding, with live music, transit art, and a little Art Mart from local artists. Free, RSVP here: https://www.transitforwardphilly.org/making_all_stops
Donations are optional, and whatever's left after costs goes to the performers. Also, as a Disabled rider who has been to way too many "accessible" events with a surprise staircase, I'm really glad this venue is actually wheelchair accessible. Come hear stories that go way beyond "it was late again."
