Discussion Which Pokémon Game Would Be Best for Me
Hello, I am looking to play a Pokémon game and would like a recommendation. What I am looking for is something on the easier side. I like cute Pokemon but I don't want so many that I am overwhelmed trying to keep them all leveled. My favourites are Squirtle and Raichu but I don't HAVE to play a game with them in it. I am mostly familiar with Gen I but would like to see some new Pokémon. Some other Pokémon I think are cute: Horsea, Poliwag, Sandshrew, Dratini. I would also like a game with dress up options for my character.
Thank you so much for any help in pointing me in the right direction!

Sword and Shield is my favorite out of the games that released since the switch came out and its extremely easy to pick up for newer players imo. Pokemon games in general are very easy to play through, at least the modern ones on the switch so dont worry about being overwhelmed or anything.
You also definitely dont have to keep every pokemon you see leveled up. You can catch what seems interesting and pick a team you like and work with those. Also in Sword and Shield all 6 pokemon on your team gain experience from battles and catching pokemon unlike the older games where only the lead pokemon and ones that enter the battle get the experience. This along with an abundance of exp items that you can give your pokemon to just give them exp means leveling your pokemon is extremely easy.
Sword and Shield along with it's two dlc also contains every pokemon that existed at the time iirc so theres plenty of options to choose from, though the game doesnt throw them all at you at once or anything so like i said it isnt overwhelming.

I think Let's go Pikachu/Eevee is a great starting point based what you described. It has great dress up options too for Pikachu or Eevee

I agree with the take that Let’s Go seems perfect for you. It features all of the Gen 1 Pokemon you’re familiar with and find cute, and has an easy difficulty curve without much worrying about grinding. It also has some dress up options for the trainer and Pikachu/Eevee, although not a ton.
After that I’d recommend any of the traditional 3d games. So XY, Sun and Moon (but not Ultra Sun and Ultra moon— they’re much harder) or Sword and Shield. They all have the EXP share, which makes grinding not a worry as well. Out of those XY has the most in depth character customization, but SWSH’s is also pretty solid.

I mean, Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee sounds like it but... I would be remiss for not mentioning Pokémon Pokopia but fair warning, it is very different from the mainline games every Pokémon in it is made cute (A plus though, is that you don't have to level them up at all.)

The most recent ones get progressively more beginner friendly so I’d start there personally

X and y. Best character customization.
Cute mini games to play with pokemon.
You feed and pet them and their affection levels affect if they get a crit or don’t KO. It’s really fun.
And the outfits are the best. Super mix and match.
And they introduce fairy pokemon (and there’s a lot of dragons in it)

Pokopia might be a good one to consider if you’re okay with it not being a traditional RPG-style Pokemon game

A lot of people have said Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee and I do think that would be a great game for you. But I also think Legends ZA would be a good fit too as there is a lot of character customization

Of the modern games, I'd go either Sword and Shield or Legends ZA given your criteria, theyre both pretty beginner friendly and have access to most of the gen 1 pokemon

I would say the XY games would be good choices. It has character customization. First mainline pokemon to do so. You can get creative. This game has a pretty broken experience share. Leave it on and you should be fine. It has plenty of cute pokemon early on and probably some later on too. As a bonus, you get given a Squirtle and Pikachu is in santalune forest, the second area where Wild Pokemon spawn.

Pokemon let's go pikachu/let's go eevee is really cute and has a lot of gen 1 pokemon, since it's kinda a rework of the 1st gen games. I don't think you can customize your character much though
