One of funniest things about this is how much the GOP has been catering to Stephen A. Smith and Bill Maher the last few years as the “Look! Look! Liberals who left the Dems” examples they want to highlight to voters. They’re like…
“Oh burn! Take that Liberals! We got your best and brightest…
Stephen A Smith! Bill Maher! John Fetterman!”

Bill Maher and Stephen A Smith are wealthy entertainers. John Federman was born is from a well off family.

He’s against what’s popular. I honestly respect people who believe in animal rights enough to go vegan but I guarantee if the majority of Americans gave up meat he’d be eating raw puppies daily
58
u/Werbnerp 8h ago
Bill Maher isn't vegan. He is a piece of shit though.
11
u/brickne3 American Expat 8h ago
I don't remember what his eating habits are specifically, but they are very weird and ideological (from what I can remember from an article a long time ago), so I can see why someone might have thought he was vegan. It definitely clicks somewhere in my mind, kind of like how Bill Clinton is or was a vegan but says it's for the health benefits and not the ideology.
19
u/Werbnerp 8h ago
He's on the Board for PETA, (which is not an ethical organization despite the word being in the name) so one would think he's at least Vegan. But PETA is a hypocritical organization and Bill Maher is a piece of shit.
3
u/brickne3 American Expat 8h ago
Jeez I didn't know he was on the board, PETA must be getting desperate (also obligatory "fuck PETA"). The article I'm vaguely remembering would have been sometime during COVID and detailed some weird shit about a near-liquid diet, like he was saying how great eating only smoothies for weeks at a time was or something. It was definitely weird.
•
u/brokeneckblues America 4h ago
I worked as a stage hand for a while and did the PETA award show where he was the host. I do remember sitting there when he said anyone who wasn’t vegan is disgusting and stupid, and some other choice insults. Although I just looked it up and says he’s not.
•
u/brickne3 American Expat 4h ago
I don't know what his specific eating philosophy is but I'm willing to bet it's inconsistent 😉

By Larry David
Imagine my surprise when in the spring of 1939 a letter arrived at my house inviting me to dinner at the Old Chancellery with the world’s most reviled man, Adolf Hitler. I had been a vocal critic of his on the radio from the beginning, pretty much predicting everything he was going to do on the road to dictatorship. No one I knew encouraged me to go. “He’s Hitler. He’s a monster.” But eventually I concluded that hate gets us nowhere. I knew I couldn’t change his views, but we need to talk to the other side — even if it has invaded and annexed other countries and committed unspeakable crimes against humanity. Two weeks later, I found myself on the front steps of the Old Chancellery and was led into an opulent living room, where a few of the Führer’s most vocal supporters had gathered: Himmler, Göring, Leni Riefenstahl and the Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII. We talked about some of the beautiful art on the walls that had been taken from the homes of Jews. But our conversation ended abruptly when we heard loud footsteps coming down the hallway. Everyone stiffened as Hitler entered the room. He was wearing a tan suit with a swastika armband and gave me an enthusiastic greeting that caught me off guard. Frankly, it was a warmer greeting than I normally get from my parents, and it was accompanied by a slap on my back. I found the whole thing quite disarming. I joked that I was surprised to see him in a tan suit because if he wore that out, it would be perceived as un-Führer-like. That amused him to no end, and I realized I’d never seen him laugh before. Suddenly he seemed so human. Here I was, prepared to meet Hitler, the one I’d seen and heard — the public Hitler. But this private Hitler was a completely different animal. And oddly enough, this one seemed more authentic, like this was the real Hitler. The whole thing had my head spinning. He said he was starving and led us into the dining room, where he gestured for me to sit next to him. Göring immediately grabbed a slice of pumpernickel, whereupon Hitler turned to me, gave me an eye roll, then whispered, “Watch. He’ll be done with his entire meal before you’ve taken two bites.” That one really got me. Göring, with his mouth full, asked what was so funny, and Hitler said, “I was just telling him about the time my dog had diarrhea in the Reichstag.” Göring remembered. How could he forget? He loved that story, especially the part where Hitler shot the dog before it got back into the car. Then a beaming Hitler said, “Hey, if I can kill Jews, Gypsies and homosexuals, I can certainly kill a dog!” That perhaps got the biggest laugh of the night — and believe me, there were plenty. But it wasn’t just a one-way street, with the Führer dominating the conversation. He was quite inquisitive and asked me a lot of questions about myself. I told him I had just gone through a brutal breakup with my girlfriend because every time I went someplace without her, she was always insistent that I tell her everything I talked about. I can’t stand having to remember every detail of every conversation. Hitler said he could relate — he hated that, too. “What am I, a secretary?” He advised me it was best not to have any more contact with her or else I’d be right back where I started and eventually I’d have to go through the whole thing all over again. I said it must be easy for a dictator to go through a breakup. He said, “You’d be surprised. There are still feelings.” Hmm … there are still feelings. That really resonated with me. We’re not that different, after all. I thought that if only the world could see this side of him, people might have a completely different opinion.

If Trump started spouting left policies, he'd drag a majority of his followers along with him. Trump is no ideologue, and in fact has only used right-wing extremism as flag of convenience in my opinion. If he thought that he could run his scam better as a left/liberal, I'm pretty sure he'd have been content to. What he needs is a stupid ("I love stupid people") and credulous flock to fleece. He just found more suckers to use on the right, it was simply the path of least resistance.
17
u/Tricky-Engineering59 8h ago
You mean like state ownership of large amounts of company stock and sending out checks (theoretically) to all citizens? And demanding an obscenely large federal government that supersedes things traditionally in purview of state’s rights? You know the kind of things Republicans used to pretend they were against.

u/brickne3 American Expat 8h ago
Real Time used to actually be a great show. It went downhill fast. But it was a staple for a lot of us in the 2000s, held onto some relevance in the early 2010s, and is (for some inexplicable reason) still on the air.
An acquaintance of mine was a guest around 2022 so I watched for the first time in years and was completely shocked at whatever the shitshow it had turned into was.
•
u/Schrodingers_Fist Canada 4h ago
Yeah up untill the early 2010's his main problem would be that even when he made points you agreed with he'd be seemingly incapable of doing it without sounding a total smug asshole, but he would still more often than not make points you agreed with.
Now hes just some weird "libertarian" type who still thinks hes a leftist but has little to no self awareness to the fact he's closer to the right than he is the left or even the center for that matter.
•
u/Spark99 7h ago
Been a fan since Politically Correct days and it was good up until Trump took office. I think all the good and thoughtful writers left the show. Now all he does is rail on about woke millennials, the dems are pussies, covid restrictions were criminal, israel can do no wrong and how Ai is going to kill us all. At least John Stewart and John Oliver still have their integrity and challenge Trump. Yup, downhill fast.
•
u/Nendilo 7h ago
I actually think getting "canceled" by ABC was the best thing that ever happened to him. That and his constant criticism of Bush, outspoken criticism of religion, and support of social issues in the early 2000s got him a decent sized following. He was never perfect but better than most Democrats of that era. He was always a smug jerk but left of the Democrats in most areas.
His brain is mush now though. He seems to have that social media addicted, MAGA brain rot.

I'm not sure that that's it (I used to watch Real Time religiously through the 2000s, dropped off somewhere in the 2010s, and ended up appalled when an acquaintance was on around 2022 and I saw what had happened to the show). I do think he was pretty sincere back in the day, but at some point his contrarian nature and old age overtook something around the time he was also starting to lose his audience. He is obviously way too far gone now, though.

Maher was never tolerant nor empathetic. I just didn't notice when he was ridiculing people I disagreed with.
From there I grew up and saw what a narrow-minded asshole he was, even though I generally agreed with him. Then he regressed even further and started seeing "woke" and Islam as a bigger threats than Republican fascism and lost all touch with reality. Doubled down on all his boomer values and science averse beliefs.

Can't say I'm surprised. Every political talking head has gone either way right or way left in the last decade. Its meetings like these that truly show how lost America is. All four of these ignorant fools got rich off of putting on a grift and so many people continue to lap it up. Not surprised to see they had dinner together. Its all theater, no substance. They’re toasting drinks to each other, pretending like the night was filled with real discussions (who actually fucking believes Trump has enough brain cells to talk about real issues?) while the average American is facing extreme economic pressures, crippling debt, and real technological threats.

Why does simply breaking bread or talking to Trump make someone spineless? I'm no fan of his, but he's in office for the next two years. Direct engagement is actually an opportunity to challenge him, hold him accountable, and point out where he’s going wrong.
