The fact that the Argentinian coach was pushing back the Spanish players instead of stopping his own player….

556

u/RockinMadRiot Jul 20 '26

Says something about his player and what he thinks he can do.

237

u/HulksInvinciblePants Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

Obviously no broad strokes, but Argentina’s entire representation during this tournament was probably a net negative event for the country’s reputation. They had the largest local fan presence and gave some of the most toxic fan bases a run for their money. US sports seem borderline tame in comparison.

64

u/Inside_Pomelo_462 Jul 20 '26

I watched three Argentina fans run from the supporters section up to the club seats and toss their drinks at England fans after they scored the winning goal. Not a single other Argentina fan around us seemed phased by it.

Ban Argentina from the next World Cup.

Absolutely disgraceful.

They have been disgusting cheats and poor sportsmen the entire tournament. The entire association should face repercussions along with the players.

Fifa will never do anything though

They don't need a ban, without Messi they will struggle to get out their group. Very average side.

Could absolutely be charged with assault in New Jersey.

16

u/lol_alex Jul 20 '26

This is how they always play. In the 2014 final versus Germany, Basti Schweinsteiger was bleeding and Christoph Kramer had to be subbed out with a concussion (he kept asking if we had won yet), and the referee apparently thought it was not that bad.

9

u/GlobalLion123 Jul 20 '26

Never going to happen. If Messi retires, they'll want to parade him around in other ways and he won't do that if they ban Argentina.

I am so happy Paredes got kicked out and it cost them the game. The way he was playing it was kind of surprising that it took so long to get 2 yellow cards. The whole team worked harder at flopping, fouling and yelling at the refs than they did at playing football.

143

u/LevDavidovicLandau They killed Kenny! You bastards! 😱 Jul 20 '26

That was Enzo Fernandez, but otherwise I agree with what you’ve written. Paredes got only got a yellow during the game, but apparently he’s gotten a red card after the match for this thuggery which means he’ll definitely receive a ban of a few matches.

I was just saying this to my in-laws. They are huge Argentina fans. They don’t have the bench depth. Spain will probably win back to back because their players are not only young, they are still developing even younger talent. They played with an absurd amount of composure while the defending world champs looked ā€œoffā€ and were giving attitude for no reason. It gave drunk friend you have to babysit vibes.

58

u/saru12gal Jul 19 '26

Henry said it clearly: Spain work from the base football, not 15 years old but from 12+, just look at Barcelona, all their categories play the same way and have the same arquetype of player.

→ More replies (3)

153

u/Narrow-Marionberry90 Jul 19 '26

16

u/the_harlinator Jul 20 '26

That’s why it’s especially not cute. These are professionals who have dedicated their lives. Injuries can be career ending. Knee injuries took out both my father and cousin who played professionally, early in their careers. It’s devastating. The shit they pull (and get away with) isn’t funny to me.

Messi's an idiot for not retiring from the national team after the 2022 WC. Obviously his legacy will be fine in the grand scheme of things but his final run at the WC will be associated with this awful, ugly team that only made it to the finals by the skin of their teeth and then promptly crashed and burned when he could've ended up his international career on the highest of high notes. But egos will do that to you.

65

u/Random0101User Jul 20 '26

Wow, that alternative angle shows how fucked that whole ending was. Aside from Paredes choking the Spanish player (#4), you can see that as the Argentinian coach was pushing the Spanish player away, the other (I think?) Argentinian coaches also put their hands on #4 (one even appears to put his hand around #4’s neck too????). The poor Spanish player is looking around him, much calmer than I’d be, with a total ā€œwth are you guys doingā€ expression as they manhandle him away.

I’m not the first, or the last, to say this, but football won today. So glad Argentina was not rewarded for their pathetic game today.

35

u/Whitelakebrazen Jul 19 '26

Same guy that didnt get a red card in the 22 semi for kicking a ball into the Netherlands bench. Fuck this team

97

u/grandtroubleartist I am furious, but I am sailing Jul 19 '26

the fact that this all started because an argentina player was grabbing onto a spanish player who just wanted to run to his teammates to celebrate is crazy. you start the brawl and you also escalate it? i know they seem to be genetically incapable of having shame but i hope they find it one day.

after fifa didn't punish the players holding a political banner that is prohibited to display as per fifa's rules after their match against england i don't have much hope for this, but paredes does deserve a lengthy ban. i don't recall a headloss this bad.

i also found it a bit silly that scaloni and his staff were trying to de escalate but only with spanish players while paredes was genuinely fighting gavi. like, again, your folks are the ones who started it and also the ones escalating it, why are you holding eric garcia back?

just shameful. i'm not their biggest fan but thank god spain won this because god knows how insufferable they would become if they managed to win two wcs in a row

Horrid behavior and sadly unsurprising considering the Argentinian team has been allowed to get away with shit for so long.

The rest of LatAm today. But in all seriousness, Spain played so well and it’s admirable they kept their composure after such nonsense all game

Absolutely diabolical.

Pathetic and embarrassing.

23

u/WorkingFit5413 Jul 19 '26

This behaviour is actually pretty common, and a big part of the reason most South American countries wouldn’t back Argentina.

This is their MO unfortunately. Blame the others and no introspection.

Spain ran for their lives. Was pretty clear who the better team was just on the pitch and effort.

I told my brother "this match is going to end with them fighting". Either because Argentina loose and they will be sore losers or Argentina wins and they will be unbearable and picking fights. No surprise there at all.

Argentina got what they put in. Nothing hahahaha.

It's deplorable how they conduct themselves. Their dirty tactics didn't work this time. No talent, no victory, no trophy.

GO SPAIN!!!!!

Tipical behavior from Argentinians, that’s why Argentina is hated by everyone in Latin America and now the world got to see it.

This guy should be banned for life. The whole match was a disgrace from Argentina behaviours. Embarrassing my son had to watch that

16

u/NtGermanBtKnow1WhoIs Jul 19 '26

What a disgusting bunch of losers. They have a track record of doing such things. They did the same thing last time with France but the referee was on their side sadly, and so they won. They always play dirty. But this time despite trying to do the same, they couldn't do any-fucking-thing bc Spain is that good. And so they devolve to such behaviour. Shameful.

68

u/spacyspice now why am I in it? 🧐 Jul 19 '26

genuinely asking, do people from Argentina support this behavior? I'd imagine that seeing so many people supporting Spain would make them realize something idk

21

u/echoesandripples What It's Like to Go Through Life As a Really Beautiful Woman Jul 20 '26

the thing about argentina is that there's constant whitewashing and weird superiority complex, when they're just as fucked over by circumstances as the rest of LATAMĀ

much like everywhere else, though, the mix of "traditional values" and very intense fight against it (it's queer friendly and surprisingly pro-women, or at least it was pre-milei), which lead to certain types of people reaffirming the commitment to evil politics and conservatism

and it does bleed into football because football is part of politics in latin america, for better or for worse.

i would bet a lot of football supporters are the alpha male podcast bro types and their boomer relatives, so you can imagine they support this type of behavior

Went in having no dog in the fight but came out really disliking Argentina for this shit over and over all match. Spain truly played, "the beautiful game." Argentina played ugly bc they were no where as skilled, disciplined or together.Ā

isn't this felony assault caught on camera in front of the president lol

edit: deportable felony assault

10

u/Super_Hour_3836 charlie day is my bird lawyer 🐦 Jul 19 '26

America doesn’t deport felons who assault POC. We make them president.

I hope the Spanish players get home safe and never have to come back and put their lives in danger again.

It’s crazy that not only they lost, this may have been Messi’s last World Cup, but the entire world basically came to the agreement that their country is really racist and unprofessional. Latinos have known this, but idk it feels different this time, whatever it is, glad they’re finally being called out

u/avviann Jul 19 '26

Why did he suddenly attack them?? His team lost, so what was he trying to do after the game?

This aggressive behaviour is terrible. If he and some Argentinian players behave like that here I don't want to know what happens at their homes.

This is how argentina have behaved all tournament. Absolutely disgraceful. I support West Ham united, I’ve seen my fair share of thugs, but this Argentina team is the most thuggish team I’ve ever seen. Nasty little bastards.

8

u/Borjimiow Jul 19 '26

Honestly, Argentina is lucky to not have played with 9 people instead... Enzo was trying to end someone's career and still asked for a VAR check and Paredes has definitely some anger issues. What an ungraceful way to end a tournament.

8

u/Jealous_Difference44 Jul 20 '26

Argentina as a whole has behaved horribly this tournament. Their fans have been disgusting

7

u/Bad-job-dad Jul 20 '26

"If you don't win you can at least look good losing"Ā  - I head my 12yo old said this to a teammate that got a little hot after losing a little league game. I didn't teach him that. I had no notes.
