Rest In Peace š Harry Styles performing an unreleased song in memory of Liam Payne on the 2-year anniversary of his death

Same! I thought it happened 6 months or almost a year ago. 2 years??? Maybe Iāve been on the internet too long.

Itās really amazing he got to do this in his own time and pace. I remember the immense pressure fans put on the 4 of them to IMMEDIATELY post Instagram tributes to Liam, as if those boys werenāt going through one of the worst weeks of their lives
304
u/storminthedark 18h ago
People were so cruel about Harryās initial post being too ācorporateā or not performing his grief enough for them despite his statement coming out less than 24 hours after the news. He spoke about how awful it was to have his grief commodified like that so Iām glad he was able to share this on his own terms.

I think I was more forgiving of their fanbase being toxic when it consisted of mostly teenagers, but now it's mostly grown adults with too many still acting entitled and it's beyond gross.

I feel this way about most fandoms at this point. Like there is really no excuse to be grown and showing your whole ass like this.

Most of the comments come from one specific very sick individual, whoās made it their life mission to be the morality police when it comes to whoās good and bad in this specific situation.
4
u/springchild 16h ago
Are they using at least three or four different accounts? Thatās wild. Iāve come across my share of standom but this is beyond anything Iāve ever seen.
3
u/GeneralBody4252 š¼Music Aficionadoš¶ 15h ago
Yep. You can tell because they repeat nonsensical arguments with the exact same odd wording
3
u/springchild 15h ago
Iāll just say that I hope they find a way to refocus their life and get better.
7
u/impl0sionatic 16h ago
Unfortunately, every academic study of the Internet suggests that this isnāt the case at all.
Even when youād expect a topic to be dominated by Millennials, itās almost always just bots pretending to be 25-35yo.
idk which generation is actually smarter or dumber, but itās def the alphas and other youngings who are quicker to believe basically anything at all
9
u/aganadolarazon 17h ago
I loathed how much pressure people put on them to release something asap. I thought the group statement should've been enough, but they kept pushing until they were all forced to post something quicker than I'm sure they would've wanted to. It made a horrible event that much sadder.

Louis posted immediately after the group statement.

I thought the same thing! People rush celebrities so much, and they deserve time to process their feelings, and this really is a good example of that.
28
u/SparklyChemMajor 18h ago
Like how rotted are peoples brains to the point they think SOCIAL MEDIA is of any relevance in any way whatsoever during such a serious event. Those things were not fans.
1
u/tricky-vixen 4h ago
I mean, here's the thing, social media is a double-edged sword in its utility as a communal space for processing serious events. In many ways, it's good that we have a space to come together around such things, and this was present in even earlier days of the internet where forum communities were more self-selecting by choice rather than by algorithm, but I think where the well got poisoned was when interaction became incentivized by commercial interests.
Now that online community spaces are so monopolized and corporatized, it's damaged the social trust in genuineness and sincerity because social media has become almost inextricable from performativity and yet has become so entrenched in how we interact with each other.
So it makes some sense that, in a society that largely gets their news and updates about everything from world events to their friend's new baby, some have come to expect it to be the forum someone would go to share their grief. And yet, by its very nature, any released expression of grief posted to social media is going to be scrutinized and accused of being performative. There's simply no winning.
And this is before you really get into the weeds of how it interacts with social expectations of celebrity behavior.

u/PossibilitySad1889 15h ago
People are insane to celebrities sometimes, imagine ur friend died and strangers on the internet are after you for not making a post on Instagram. Itās ludicrous
2
u/PresentationNo448 5h ago
There are some reeaally weird Liam fans on here too. I searched their names here to find this video and there's a weird ass post delusionally seeing things in some random promo pic of Harry's and blaming him for not reacting to the death appropriately. They hate all 1D members for "not saying anything" before Liam died as if keeping in touch in fucking private doesnt exist. It was the 3rd post for me š¬Ā

āYou dance until youāre tired. No you donāt now you never will will youā Oh my heart š RIP Liam what a beautiful song so glad Harry was able to have that moment to honor what Liam meant to him.

He died on a Wednesday. The funeral was on a Thursday.
The song was written immediately after he found out he died.

u/Special_Good_7074 7h ago
the funeral was also on a Wednesday. November 20th.

Yeah my bad, but he said he wrote it when he passed, not during the funeral.

We donāt know exactly when he wrote it, he just said it was āabout two years agoā but I kinda doubt he was cranking out songs the second he heard the news

I was at the library with my friend and remember the exact moment this happened. I swear I felt the world shift differently. I wasn't even a huge directioner growing up but this was so devastating. Then I had that exact same feeling when elections took place 3 weeks later. I swear the sadness around Liam's death was a forewarning of the difficult, heavy feelings to come. I swear we all felt it as a collective

A beautiful tribute. Is this a song that fans knew of before he performed it? Asking because sometimes the unreleased songs are known to hardcore fans.

u/storminthedark 18h ago
No it wasnāt known to fans before tonight! He gave a speech before performing it and said that he wrote it 2 years ago (presumably soon after Liamās death)

In the early morning rain And the flicker of the light In the kisses of the waves Iām rustling through the shades [Lyrics unclear]
[Lyrics unclear] Is it just another lie? Instead of my arms are wide
You dance until youāre tired Among the stars above, the friend in all those satellites Do you?
Iām not wise enough But I wrote you a letter just to burn it up And watch it rise Like you're in the sky
[Lyrics unclear] Just wasnāt enough To help you understand what you leave behind
I could tell you what itās like To bury friends on a Wednesday nights Gathered in the garden 'round a fire
You dance until youāre tired Now you don't Now you never will, will you?
Iām not wise enough to call for a conversation And then back it up Why? Like you in the sky

Must be hard to deal with it all really.
Does anyone know why Harry Styles stylist makes him look like Ted Lasso though
13
u/GeneralBody4252 š¼Music Aficionadoš¶ 7h ago
Itās a callback to disco culture in the 80s. People usually went out dancing wearing business casual because they went straight from work. His stylist explained it a while ago.

u/floftie š„šæFilm Critic 7h ago
I just think if you already look a bit like Ted Lasso you should either choose the moustache OR the haircut and drop the other.

Wait, I had no idea Liam Payne died. I was wondering why he disappeared from the music scene bc it seemed like he was having a low(er)-key but steady pulse on the music scene

Wow you missed that? I feel like it was all over the news and it truly shocked me because I remember where I was watching the boys on X Factor in my own living room as a child

u/UnexpectedBlahFeels 11h ago
I probably saw it and just forgot. Doesn't seem like the kind of thing I'd totally miss, but I'd forget bc I wasnt ever super into 1D or any of their solo music. They each had like 1 solo song I liked lol.
