Concerts & Festivals 🎸 Miley Cyrus pays tribute to Dolly Parton with a performance of “Jolene” at her first major concert in four years.

I was there tonight and before she performed Jolene she told a story (while crying) about how she only ever saw Dolly in concert one time and it was at the Hollywood Bowl and that’s the reason she wanted to play these shows there 😭
eta: she also said Dolly wasn’t happy that she didn’t want to perform with her that night and just wanted to be in the audience like a normal person, so Dolly opened the show with Best Of Both Worlds and then said “my niece is Hannah Montana and she’s here tonight!” And at the end of all of it right before she started singing Jolene, she was saying she feels more connected to Dolly now than ever and that she can’t wait to see her again

u/turningtee74 14h ago
I saw a video of that leading into the performance. Since I already saw it, I didn’t click this and just assumed the speech was included. I was so surprised to see the negative comments here when she was literally crying going into the song. I guess that explains a bit, but yeesh

u/solojones1138 13h ago
Do people not know that Dolly was her godmother? Yeesh.

u/Dr_Zman 11h ago
Some poor souls weren't lucky enough to come up with Hannah Montana and Aunt Dolly.

u/solojones1138 9h ago
I've never seen Hannah Montana, but I like Dolly so I know this about her for sure.

I love the Hollywood bowl. I haven’t seen a show there in a criminally long time.

I’ve been to many many many venues across continents. The Hollywood Bowl remains my favorite place to see a show.

Damn this comment section is brutal. Everyone wants Miley to tour agai, Miley doesn't but does have a 2 day concert at Hollywood Bowl and people aren't happy with her performance??? Miley can't win.

u/Weavercat 6h ago
Considering that Dolly is Miley's godmother, they've performed Jolene together, and that they are both truly related (seventh cousins?) I don't get why people are so harsh?
48
u/Thisisstupidly 11h ago
So weird to see so much criticism on a tribute. Rip Dolly sorry for your loss Cyrus family.

u/SnooStrawberries2955 14h ago
Who doesn’t even know the lyrics? Her backup? What?!
15
u/DarkSparkandWeed Im gunna take a nap right here 😭 10h ago
Yeah I couldnt catch that part I was like huhh is she doing a bit like Dolly did during this song or??

u/BlastedAlien 8h ago
I thought maybe she was talking to her backup like Jolene don’t even know this song? 🤷🏽♀️

I was there tonight and honestly she was so underwhelming. She barely sang, she let the crowd take over most of the singing. Don’t even think I heard her sing more than 2 lines of “we can’t stop.” It just felt lazy

38
u/PandaJellyBeans 11h ago
Perhaps, it was grief, which is currently not the same as being lazy.

u/Numerous_Hyena_8151 11h ago
If it's grief then grieve. Don't throw a concert you're not able to perform at.
9
u/GaylicBread accidentally holding space for this slur 9h ago
Exactly. It's not like she needs the money, she can take a few weeks or months or years to grieve if she wanted to. And I'm not going to buy "well maybe she wants to work, to keep busy" if people who were there are reporting that she barely sang the whole night.

Copy and pasted from reply I made elsewhere in the thread:
Yes, concert tickets are expensive. The music industry is a marketing machine. There are contracts. There are things that happen behind the scenes. Whilst the industry places the artist as the brand and forefront of everything.
TLC, made no money from Waterfall because their “managers” took all the money. Amy Winehouse was abandoned by her father, drugged by her lover and placed on a stage for money. Britney was also abandoned by her family, placed to work at a young age, placed in a toxic relationship for more views and then attacked by everyone when she broke. Justin was in a way kidnapped and manipulated, all he wanted was to sing but he was made to work and could his parents do anything? No. Because the people offering “an opportunity of a lifetime” probably put him in a contract that disempowered the parents from protecting him because those who made the contract took advantage of the parents lack of understanding.
I am not going to pick on someone when I have no idea what is happening behind the scenes. I’ve observed enough to not pick on the scapegoat of a work contract which makes the person a brand whilst all the other people behind the scenes are puppeteers.
I’m choosing to humanize these artists, artists we have been manipulated to worship and if they fall short, artists we have been manipulated to attack. They are people just you and me, let’s not forget that.
•
u/babs1789 18m ago
It wasn’t good dude.
•
u/PandaJellyBeans 6m ago
I think you missed the point of my message.
My point is, the artist of the face of the brand, and not necessarily the one calling the shots.
Sure, there has been more advocacy for artists recently but they are not the ones doing all the planning, there’s many people involved. They have a job to do and they are told to do it. That’s typically the role of a singer/ artist.

This is disappointing. I’ve seen her in concert twice before and she was great. Brought the energy and the vocals. I wonder why

Sorry for her loss. As far as the performance, she sounds tired and under-rehearsed. I am tired of people doing shows without the pre-work. Miley has natural talent for sure but even Beyoncé trains before shows. Give people what they paid for. People need to stop phoning shit in especially with ticket prices where they are at.

u/Entire-Anxiety-803 why can’t we just tax the stupid people? 🍾🍾🍾 10h ago
“Even Beyoncé” is a hell of a take, the woman is known for her work ethic.
27
u/omojos 10h ago
She also has natural born talent. My point is if someone (even Bey of all people) who sounds incredible effortlessly is practicing, what is Miley doing thinking she can just get back on stage without adequate rehearsal.
14
u/Entire-Anxiety-803 why can’t we just tax the stupid people? 🍾🍾🍾 8h ago
Ah ok, I totally get that. I need a Reddit break. I’m not even that much of a Bey fan yet I’m out here like WHO U CALLIN LAZY.
8
u/Firm_Match1418 6h ago
That’s what they’re saying. Even Beyoncé with her talent and work ethic doesn’t cut corners.
9
u/mushtrash 9h ago
She has a studio recording of this absolutely kills this song one of the greatest covers ever.
9
u/little_canuck Tina! You fat lard! 🦙🚲 6h ago
For anyone reading that wants to hear Miley do a fantastic job covering "Jolene", look up the backyard sessions video from 2012. That one was excellent.
31
u/PandaJellyBeans 11h ago
So strange that after losing a loved one that she would be tired. Unless, of course, I don’t know, grief perhaps? 🤷♀️
12
u/rooftrash 10h ago
Then don’t have a concert people pay tons of money to see?? Those things are not cheap.
8
u/omojos 9h ago
Yep that is my point. People paid for this show and the whole show was underwhelming. She is an incredibly talented person who has done this a lot where she thinks she can just get on stage with no practice. I say this as a bit of a fan. People are not getting your money's worth at her shows and its valid to be disappointed. If she is so tired and aggrieved she should be resting at home. If anybody deserves to stay home and rest, its her.
5
u/PandaJellyBeans 6h ago
As someone who has recently lost someone, staying at home grieving by myself has actually been detrimental. It would have been nice to grieve with others.
People weren’t forced to purchase tickets. Whether an artist sings or not, there are other costs involved. I would be interested to know the thoughts of those who bought the tickets and attended the concert.
It’s all good to say an opinion and yet not be involved. Perhaps the fans actually enjoyed the experience and were understanding of the situation. I don’t know, they don’t seem to be commenting here.

u/rooftrash 37m ago
saying the concert wasn’t great is not personally attacking her… it’s literally just an anecdote. Geez
•
u/PandaJellyBeans 10m ago
Amy Winehouse was boo’d by the crowd when she was told to perform. She was not in her right mind to perform. She needed care and those making money from her brand didn’t care.
I don’t know if contracts have improved and working conditions improved.
The artist is the brand, not the boss.
I don’t pick on artists, when there’s people calling the shots with the artist at the face of the brand and not necessarily the one making the decisions.

your criticism is super valid. Grief doesn’t just erase all of that stuff

I will be highly disappointed if Miley is the superbowl half time. I just know it won't be on par with bad bunny and Kendrick considering how tired the performance is from this show. It's a clear indication of what type of show we would get early next year. Miley is talented but she can do better.

u/omojos 9h ago
I think if she trained for it, it would be a good show. She seems completely burnt out though, tbh. Somebody said Hilary Duff should do it and honestly she seems to be in great shape and ready for that moment if given the chance.
34
u/Aromatic_Dig_4239 9h ago
I love Hilary but I don’t think she has the hits that the GP knows enough to justify a halftime show
13
u/beldaran1224 9h ago
Lol what? Hilary Duff is a meme act. Imagine thinking she even has a shot at the superbowl.
2
u/omojos 9h ago
I don't think she has a shot. I think she would put in more effort than Miley.
3
u/beldaran1224 9h ago
Sure. Probably. But like, effort isn't all that relevant a bar, lol. Like tons of people put in a lot of effort, lol.
Duff's music isn't and has never been that good, her voice isn't either, and everyone knows she can't dance.
And you're talking to someone who memorized no less than two Duff albums once upon a time.
You could name a ton of artist who put in a lot of effort, lol. Like, we all know Katseye doesn't have a shot either, but they work harder than Duff, so why mention Duff and not them?
•
u/omojos 2h ago
I think effort is the bar that would make Miley a better performer though. Her being Miley only goes so far when she spends the whole show passing that mic to fans and not singing.
Someone mentioned Duff it is literally not that deep. The point is Miley did a poor performance for the cost of tickets people paid for. People are paying less to see better performances from lesser talents.

u/MKUltra16 5h ago edited 5h ago
I am a tone deaf teacher but I would also put in more effort than Miley and have about as many hits as Hillary Duff. Hopefully they pick me
•
u/Hobobo2024 1h ago
Miley has been absolutely amazing every show recording ive seen her in except this one.
And this one is her trying to sing a song for dolly where no doubt shes probably trying to keep from crying.
I would think she would practice and not be near tears for the superbowl. Actually, I think all superbowls are prerecorded anyway arent they?

It looked like he leaned so hard into this song live when he lost his son, talking to himself. There were a few performances he turned the lights off and stayed with an extended chorus over and over. god is great, yeah, god is good, yeah just screaming his heart out.

I think Miley had a couple good songs but I don’t like this rendition of Jolene, and I don’t think she’s a particularly good singer.

I will always be flabbergasted at how anybody thinks she's a good singer 😆. Miley stans are apparently largely here.

Hilary Duff is killing it for millennial women into pop music. She has no wider appeal to the general public and hit song recognition that the Superbowl demands.
-2
u/tarowm32them00n 4h ago
You havent listened to her latest album and it shows
3
u/89764637527 3h ago
Wrong. I’m a millennial woman who loves pop music. I just have enough self awareness to understand that what I like isn’t going to appeal to the general public who watches the Superbowl because I am not in a bubble.
