Britney's stylized vocals are night and day from Tate's. They sound cool and sexy. She also doesn't do the baby voice for every single word and sings in different tones through out each song. She knows when to use the stylized baby voice and not overdo it.

Super nasally and sounds like she has a cough. I don't know how much she dances in her videos but she was a very talented dancer as a child in the band Walk off the Earth's - "If I Ruled the world" music video.

u/gaanmetde 5h ago
The thing that I donāt get about her is that she is an incredible dancer technically. She is trained in ballet.
I just donāt feel like her choreo often relays that.
33
u/particledamage 5h ago
Itās not very lyrical or flowy but it lacks the more āhardā style where sheās nailing beats or has like real rhythm. So it feels like someone just doing a lot of technically impressive stuff at random.

I'm convinced she's another 'for the male gaze' pop star. I have a music channel that's all just ridiculous pop and whenever she's come across, it all sounds generic try to be sultry and the 2 album covers I saw are her legs spread away from the camera and standing in her underwear in goalie gear (if she was a tendie, I stand corrected). Now this. Are we just going down a list of cliches are this point?
133
u/tessellation__ 5h ago
She is definitely for the male gaze, but are men listening to Tate McRae? Where is her music being streamed from??? It just sounds like a baby dubbed over a beat, I do not get it! I totally get the beauty aspect of it though she is gorgeous and dressed like a stripper, totally get it.

I think we underestimate the amount of women who center themselves, their lives, their looks, their behavior, etc. around men, menās approval and therefore the male gaze. So many women around me claim they used to be pick mes and that they cringe over their old selves, while they still center their lives around their men, their latest flirt, wanting a man, etc.
It feels almost as if they missed the point of what a pick me is - theyāre still pick mes, theyāre just incognito compared to before. Itās like they want male approval but donāt want to appear as if they want it, if that makes sense? Like how everyone wants to have a good style, but if you try too hard, you ruin said style by being a try hard.
These women LOVE famous women who appeal to the male gaze. Itās as though theyāre allowed to say āI love appealing to the male gaze!ā by saying āI love this woman!ā In reality, they dream of being her and being able to be so openly lusted after by men.

Realistically there's just less "radio listening" and "MTV watching" than there used to be, which were some of the big vessels for learning about new hits.
Now everyone can create personally-cultivated playlists effortlessly on mobile devices that can be taken anywhere. Sure maybe you let Spotify's DJ pick some songs for you, but in general Spotify will rotate in a lot of songs it already tracked you listening to unless you specifically ask it not to. And that's IF you use the DJ rather than just your hand-crafted playlists.

Genuine question: What do you mean with "dead"? Few users? No indicator of a hit song anymore because music tastes have become so nichey? Or just using forced stats to determine a #1? I would have thought that they are other songs with 5 mio streams, nut they were excluded because Spotify just counted songs released within the last x hrs or something.

The maga thing is because sheās Albertan and did an ad for the American Olympic team. Just giving it some context, not saying I agree with anyone

22
u/whichwitch9 6h ago
Tbf, Hughes is nowhere near the most vocally maga- that's why people were caught off guard at the white house reaction, though probably shouldn't have been. The Tkachuks are by far the most vocal and visible. The Hughes just had the bigger moment in the game. This is giving people like Guerin (general manager for the Minnesota wild currently) deniability- the dude who arranged for Patel to be in the room, the phone call, the visit, ect.
It's not I don't think he's maga, most male hockey players sadly are which is why the NHL is culturally such a shitshow, but it is that he's by far not the most vocal, and there's about 34 other dudes involved that love he became the lightning rod so people stop paying attention to the rest of them.
4

Thatās why I said āone of the most,ā honestly. I know he doesnāt take the cake but since the white house visit, heās not been shy. Catās out of the bag. That was a grand moment for the Admin. But yes, the whole of hockey is a shit show.
ā¢
u/whichwitch9 2h ago
I mean, not really- I follow the Devils and have since I was a kid. Hes not my favorite Devil, but you can't ignore the buzz around him, and he is legitimately a great player in the hockey sense. He hasn't mentioned Trump or politics since the White House visit, and didn't talk about it prior. I am of the mind silence is telling, but he's also not out there advertising. It also isn't a lie that prior he was known to be a supporter of women's hockey, which makes the joke reaction more confusing- only 3 of the men went to support the women's team in their gold medal game- the Hughes Brothers and JT Miller. Honestly trash behavior from the rest of them and Im still surprised that doesn't get called out much on the others
The discourse is interesting in a bad sense, especially since so many of the guys came back acting like trash to their own teams, but we thankfully aren't seeing that from Hughes- he's been one of the least unhinged of the lot so far

Who gives a shit if sheās from Alberta? Alberta is not really comparable to your shitty MAGA states.

it kinda is lol, you'd have to be from here to know the similarities. Quebec is like our Florida, Alberta is like our deep south

Thank you for getting it. Lol. And my comment definitely isnāt reflective of all Albertans (really, bless ALL the good ones), but itās definitely a dominant cultural thing there, this conservatism. Being a Canadian myself I can acknowledge that.

Quebec is absolutely not Florida, I cannot disagree enough
I mean it's besides the point. I'd argue Alberta is both deep south and Florida

Iām not American, so mind yourself. Lol.
Iāll quote what I replied to someone else: āIāll admit thatās my weakest and least fair point on its own. If it were a one-off, it wouldnāt matter. But.. to quote Kamala⦠it 'exists in the context' (lol) of a much bigger pattern. Her other choices consistently lean conservative, or at least show sheās comfortable being complicit with the administration. Maybe itās an Alberta cultural thing, maybe not, but the pattern is definitely thereā

She fucking sucks. She is a phenomenal dancer but her music may as well be AI slop.

No hate to this lady but the only time I ever hear about her is on Reddit or TikTok. Donāt think Iāve ever seen any of her promo or heard anyone talk about her IRL. Iāve never heard any of her songs either.
Itās really weird but I canāt fully articulate it.

No shade but her fan base is young. Like middle school-college, so thatās why itās so geared towards TikTok, but I would argue thatās at least a niche she has over other artists like Zara Larsson

Her music is just so incredibly bland to me! I saw the video pop up on my feed and gave it a try but itās just awful. Especially during the time we currently live in. I have no idea how sheās at #1 unless itās bots and payola

normally i don't jump on hate bandwagons but for some reason i really can't stand her. i suppose it's because she's not very vocally talented. she could be a great songwriter for a better singer.

As a Canadianā¦. Tate McRae is such a disappointment, I was rooting for her. But when she appeared to take up sides for the Americans during the Olympics, right in the middle of threats against our country by mango tits⦠I gave up. She literally seems like an airhead with not a single bit of backbone in her body. That⦠and her weird mumbly baby voice annoy the shit out of me

she's attractive and an excellent dancer, but her music sounds like those fake pop songs on TV shows, where they take the piss out of them for being overly processed.

I donāt like anything about it and her voice is worse than I could have imagined

Her lead singles have never stuck for me⦠Iāve always found her songs with the most promise end up as album tracks (bloodonmyhands, run for the hills, etc.,)
That being said, this is the most nothing burger song sheās ever released. It goes nowhere, the concept is kinda silly, and sheās kinda been stuck in this early 2000s sound for YEARSSSS. Would be nice to see her lean into something new.

I was cheering for her, even though sheās not that good, because sheās from Calgary, but dropped her as soon as she did the NBC sports ad. Like girl, America has dozens of you already. All the aspects that made you stand out have been flattened to make you as one-note as your mumbling voice.

Everyone hating and some people talking about bots inflating numbers???
The song is a banger and Iāve listened to it at least 100 times. Thereās definitely a big audience for her, no need to fake it š¤·š»āāļø

As a dancer, Tate is easily one of the absolute best in pop right now, but her music just feels so generic to me. I just canāt pinpoint what her signature brand as an artist actually is.

Iām ngl I didnāt either before this thread but the fact that sheās able to garner this much of a response is probably part of it
If youāre a pop star and this many people care about your Spotify debut, even if in a āwhy do people care about herā kind of way, it means youāre doing something right
