I’m sure everyone’s grateful he stopped the gunman when he did, but I can’t imagine the guilt he feels. I hope he isn’t used as a political pawn because of this.

u/ob_viously 3h ago

Exactly. I’ve never been in his position, thankfully, but I’d bet money he doesn’t feel like a hero. He’s probably traumatized for life.

u/Talisa87 I wont not fuck you the fuck up 🥊🥊 3h ago

God, same. The usual suspects will be all over this, talking about "See, all it DOES take is a good guy with a gun!" as a cudgel against any real conversation about how to address this problem

•

u/Express_Pop810 2h ago

Exactly and they gloss over the fact 4 people died.

•

u/gamecat89 2h ago

That’s all I can think about. I’m glad he did what he did - but this is going to be pulled out for 60 years about a “good guy with a guy” instead of addressing why we have all these school shootings in the first place

u/TheVintageJane 4h ago

There were lots of heroes that day.

The man who saw him entering the school and confronted him such that the shooter began shooting before he entered the school. This not only gave the people in the classrooms some time to prepare, but it alerted Kaylub which is why he grabbed his gun and went to help.

The teacher who threw her phone at the shooter and wrestled the gun away from him and was still wrestling with him when Kaylub made it to the classroom and ended the situation.

A whole bunch of people stood up to save those kids and were incredibly brave in their own ways.

This is so sad.  5 lives lost, this man absolutely traumatized.

215

u/keytoarson_ 4h ago

He's a hero no doubt.

However, we're not talking enough about the teacher who threw her phone at the shooter and was wrestling with him before this dude came into the classroom and shot him. She saved so many little lives.

86

u/casapantalones 4h ago

She is a true hero as well. Taking on an armed gunman while unarmed herself.

•

u/normanbeets 2h ago

I met a 3rd grader yesterday who told me that her in her shooter drill, the teacher said that they have to hide behind a wall. But if the shooter gets into the class then the teacher will fight the shooter and the kids have to run away before the teacher is killed.

The fact that Americans have to practise gun drills is awful. Kids should be able to go to school to make friends, play and learn, without fear of whether they'll come home that day.

•

u/normanbeets 1h ago

My oldest nephew is in 2nd and I am absolutely gutted that he's going to be having these conversations. He's tiny, shouldn't have to even know that shootings happen. I remember doing gun drills in the 90s but there were never any conversations about the teacher needing to sacrifice themself. We are 41 weeks into 2026 and there have been 52 school shootings.

•

u/vewywascallywabbit Mawwaige is wot bwings us togevah tovay. Wuve, twue wuve 💓 58m ago

I feel absolutely awful :( we do have own drills etc.. here in England, but for intruders, natural disasters etc... cannot fathom little children being forced to do gun drills to live

•

u/CheesecakeExpress 8m ago

52? Oh my word. That is horrendous.

•

u/casapantalones 56m ago

This is fucking grim, damn

50

u/ob_viously 3h ago

And she was only 25 😭 probably only her second or third year of teaching.

•

u/vewywascallywabbit Mawwaige is wot bwings us togevah tovay. Wuve, twue wuve 💓 2h ago

I heard it was her first job as a special needs teacher and she was extremely passionate :(

37

u/BisexualSunflowers 3h ago

Damn I didn't even know about that, that's chilling. She deserves to be celebrated as well.

I hope Kaylub is able to heal from this and get the help he needs

There is a GFM with over $260k raised for him already so he can take time from work and get mental health support.

I wish we would live in a world where none of that would have been necessary.

Well said.

u/kumf 4h ago

Listening to her speak, you can tell she has a lot empathy and compassion in her heart. She raised a good man. What a terrible burden for both of them to have to carry.

u/g0ldilungs How much for the 🪵🐦‍⬛? 4h ago

This man is a hero, full stop.
With all of the individuals so pro-gun, I was always shocked that somehow no bystander ever seems to be able to disable a shooter.

Of course it happened in Oregon. The one state the gun wingnuts would have you believe are too soft to carry.

A bystander couldn’t even disable the Walmart guy in Texas before he murdered dozens.

COME ON, OREGON! COME ON, KAYLUB! ♥️

215

u/clairejv 4h ago

Most of Oregon, geographically speaking, is conservative. No one who knows anything about Oregon would think there are no gun owners there.

89

u/SpiceEarl 4h ago

There are also lots of liberal gun owners in Oregon, including ones with concealed carry permits.

48

u/_iridessence_ Cheerocracy > Kakistocracy 3h ago

Yes, this man and his wife are progressive. Even though the right is trying to claim him.

•

u/Its_Alive_74 2h ago

Are they?

•

u/FlyConfident1622 she’s on a crazy warpath about a bird right now 1h ago

Based on Oregon demographics, he’s just as likely to be left wing as right wing. I’m not sure that nailing down his political party to 100% certainty will do much good for anyone right now. He seems traumatized and wants to be left alone

•

u/clairejv 2h ago

There are lots of liberal gun owners everywhere, tbh, but that's a whole nother mess.

63

u/Katicflis1 4h ago edited 3h ago

"Geographically speaking" ... ?

are you one of those people that thinks largely empty land votes?

Oergon has voted blue every presidential election since 1988 and was +14% positive toward Kamala in 2024.

Oregon also is the second highest voter turn out in the country(over 70%) and thus is more true to the state population's desires than places like Texas and Arkansas that hang around 50%(cause the local government does shit like underequip certain areas with poll stations to ensure that only the people they want to vote actually get to easily vote -- you know, voter suppression to ensure a certain side has an easier time winning).

EDIT: Someone responding to me is pretending Bend, Oregon is a conservative town.

Bend, OR Political Map | Democrat & Republican Areas in Bend | BestNeighborhood.org

"Bend leans Democratic by roughly 16 points: about 58% of voters vote Democratic and 42% Republican."

45

u/casapantalones 4h ago

Our voter turnout is so high because we are a 100% vote by mail state and have been for years. We do not have polling places in Oregon.

4

u/IntelligentMeringue7 3h ago

Is this literal??

•

u/casapantalones 2h ago

Yes this is absolutely true! Since 1998. It’s amazing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vote-by-mail_in_Oregon

•

u/prying_mantis 2h ago

I believe Washington state is also, I know King County is

•

u/leopardsmangervisage 2h ago

Yup, the whole state is vote by mail. Thank god, I love it!

•

u/IntelligentMeringue7 2h ago

Wow. I had no idea. That’s interesting asf.

•

u/casapantalones 1h ago

It’s honestly so great. Gives you time to research things and make informed decisions, and it’s so convenient.

29

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson I made the hat for the tiger 🤷🏻‍♂️ 4h ago

If 70% of the geographic area of the place is a certain way, that DOES speak to the culture of it, regardless of votes. The cities may have the sway, but if you’re driving around the state, you’re meeting a whole lot more people that slant a way

It doesnt matter about the math of the votes in that regard

10

u/IlexAquifolia 3h ago

It’s a blue state but Bend is way more conservative than the other cities in Oregon and surrounded by conservative country. Even if there aren’t as many people out in Central and Eastern Oregon it still has a certain frontier cultural influence, even in progressive parts of the state.

14

u/g0ldilungs How much for the 🪵🐦‍⬛? 4h ago

It’s wilderness, yes. But it’s a blue state is my point.
And also, my point is of course a blue state who totes guns is the one able to disarm a mass shooter versus a red state.

Just an observation on which states tend to lean which way on gun ownership. (Not political. Just for firearms).

1

u/clairejv 4h ago

States don't disarm mass shooters. People do. Do we have any idea what this dude's politics are?

lmao you are literally talking about gun laws

0

u/Masta-Blasta Conductor of the Toxic Gossip Train 🚂 3h ago

Yeah, didn’t this happen in Bend? I am no conservative so I am in no way trying to support what they think or give them credit in anyway, but that is a very red area.

•

u/normanbeets 2h ago

Babe the nickname for us here is "ore-gun-ians," even the libs are proud gun owners. Bend is a blue spot surrounded by red land. No one believes Oregonians are too soft to carry.

•

u/FlyConfident1622 she’s on a crazy warpath about a bird right now 45m ago

For real. Statistical percentage of gun owners is over 50%, which is higher than Texas (and many other red states)

30

u/Chaoticgood790 this outfit is unfortch 4h ago

He’s going to need so much support. Ugh truly heartbreaking

94

u/Random0101User 4h ago

Do we know how this man was able to get to the school before police?

(And just in case it wasn’t clear, it’s a genuine question and I’m not making any accusations. I’m so sorry for the poor victims and also for this man, even though he acted so bravely).

179

u/JoanOfSnark_2 4 inch little brown Bebe shoes 4h ago

He was driving by the school when he saw the gunman enter the building so he was closer by than the police.

80

u/Random0101User 4h ago

🤯 thats wild. What a heavy burden to bear and yet he prevented so much more senseless loss.

Thank you both for taking the time to answer.

107

u/SpiceEarl 4h ago

Dumb luck. My understanding is he was on his lunch break, driving by the school, and saw the shooter going into the school with a gun.

206

u/Successful-Winter237 4h ago edited 3h ago

He followed the shooter into the school.. a hell of a lot braver than the POS Ulvalde cowards

•

u/Used_Gear8871 33m ago

I get so angry each time those cowards are mentioned. They stopped parents from rubbing in to rescue those children. And just stood there.

•

u/Successful-Winter237 29m ago

They were unmitigated trash

54

u/theesmartstallion 4h ago

The police got there in 3 minutes from the call which is amazing. Kaylub was just ready!

•

u/Elismom1313 Am I …ugly? 😏 1h ago

Yea fr everyone got lucky he was where he was but the police responded crazy fast. Tbh so fast he’s lucky he didn’t get shot

30

u/coolcoolcool485 Excluded from this narrative ❌ 4h ago

She said he army crawled through a window the gunman shot out

150

u/friendlyblckhottie Who is this rumor spreading b!+(h? 4h ago

What more is needed for some gun reform in this fucking country?! It’s so damn heartbreaking.

•

u/igiveupmakinganame 1h ago

this is a weird title. as if she would ever speak out against her son for saving lives? or anyone would for that matter

46

u/Stillwater-Scorp1381 4h ago

Kaylub is a hero. When active shooters are met with return fire the body count is drastically reduced. He should be celebrated for saving lives.

•

u/Own-Importance5459 Hoa Hoa Hoa Season 🍂✨ 2h ago

This man is a hero. He risked his life to save a ton of lives. I hope he heals from this!

Another sexual assault another school shooting I swear it’s one after the other

10

u/angmar2805 3h ago

Lotta family annihilators too lately

24

u/explodedemailstorage 3h ago

The shooter was 16. He was also a kid. I’m so depressed. Our country has such a deep sickness within it. Hundreds of school shootings every year now.

•

u/TizzyBumblefluff girl what the fuck 57m ago

It’s ridiculous that this even needs to be a thing. To be so on alert.
