Pop Culture Trivia 🤓 The Nepo baby conversation we’re not having

7.3k Upvotes

Yes, we’ve had the young and hot of Hollywood’s elite conversation to death. Do you know who we’re not talking about?

Jim Hanks.

Yep, Tom Hanks has a brother. You’ve seen almost nothing that he’s in because he almost exclusively plays no named characters in single episodes of z-grade shows. But Tom Hanks doesn’t have the time to do all of the Toy Story voice work for games, cartoons, toys ect, that Pixar wants, so Jim is credited for pretty much any Woody work that isn’t the movies themselves. Jim (probably) makes a pretty penny by impersonating his brother’s work. What a fun fact!

Pop Culture Trivia 🤓 Celebrities' Stage Names and Their Birth Names

Thumbnail
gallery
1.4k Upvotes

There are many more. Do share them in the comments.

I use the term birth name over something like "real name" because I don't like that term, and because some artists have made their stage name their legal name.

Something curious I noticed: Italian names are both too ethnic and also just the right amount of exotic. Some artists changed their names to sound less Italian (e.g., Brittany Bertolotti to Brittany Murphy) while others changed their name to sound vaguely Italian (e.g., Margaret Yvonne Middleton to Yvonne De Carlo).

Pop Culture Trivia 🤓 Celebrities who speak enough languages to be secret agents

Thumbnail
gallery
331 Upvotes

The secret agent part is obviously a joke. 47% of people worldwide are bilingual, while only 3% of people qualify as polyglots (speaking 4+ languages)

Shockingly, numerous celebs are members of this club:

Natalie Portman- Studying at Harvard couldn’t stop Natalie from learning multiple languages (Hebrew, English, French, Japanese, German, and Spanish)

Viggo Mortensen- Mr Mortensen might not come from a mythical land, but he does have an almost mythic level of knowledge in languages (Danish, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Catalan, Norwegian, and Arabic)

Shakira- Shakira has long impressed fans with her ability to speak 6 languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, French, Italian, and English)

Tom Hiddleston- The British actor is famous for his calming accent, yet he can understand countless others (English, Spanish, French, Greek, and Latin)

Sandra Oh- Sandra Oh might not be able to perform groundbreaking surgeries, but she can master different languages (English, Korean, Spanish, and French)

Trevor Noah- Trevor Noah speaks 7 languages (English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, Tswana, Tsonga, and German)

Daniel Bruhl- The character actor can do an awful lot more than simply appear intimidating. He can speak 6 languages (English, German, Spanish, French, Catalan, and Portuguese)

Mickey Curtis- The senior Japanese pop star speaks 6 languages (Japanese, English, German, French, Italian, and Thai)

Priya Anand- The Tamil mainstay actor speaks 7 languages (Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Spanish, and English)

Which celebrity’s language ability do you envy the most?

Pop Culture Trivia 🤓 Roles Leonardo DiCaprio declined, and who eventually got them

  1. Brokeback Mountain (2005). DiCaprio denied a role in this movie, although it is not clear if it was Jack or Ennis. Jake Gyllenhaal/Heath Ledger got the roles. Source, Vulture
  2. The Talented Mr Ripley (1999). DiCaprio denied the role of Tom Ripley, which then went to Matt Damon. Source, The Guardian
  3. The Star Wars prequel trilogy (2002-2005). DiCaprio met with George Lucas but ultimately turned down the role of Anakin Skywalker, which went to Hayden Christensen. Source, Time Magazine
  4. Peter Parker in the Spiderman trilogy (2002-2007). The role went to Leo's good friend Tobey Maguire. Source, Time Magazine
  5. Robin in Batman Forever (1995). Chris O'Donnell took the role. Source, Time Magazine
  6. Neo in The Matrix (1999). DiCaprio initially said yes to the role, but then declined, saying he did not want to do a film that relied so much on visual effects so soon after Titanic. The role went to Keanu Reeves. Source, TheWrap
  7. Patrick Bateman in American Psycho (2000). Lionsgate wanted DiCaprio or another famous star in the role and was even willing to pay him 20 million USD, although Mary Harron opposed this decision, as he was too 'boyish'. DiCaprio was even announced by Lionsgate as being cast as Bateman; after a lot of behind-the-scenes conflict, DiCaprio eventually left citing creative differences, and Harron's choice of the relatively unknown Christian Bale was finally cast. DiCaprio left to film The Beach instead. Source, The Guardian
  8. Steve Jobs in the eponymous film (2015). He was approached to star, but ultimately did not join the project. Michael Fassbender was cast. Source, Variety

Do you agree with Leo on passing on these roles, and are you happy with the performances by the other actors? 'American Psycho' was probably the one closest to having Leo. What do you think Leo would've been like in these roles? He's been in so many iconic films and would have been in more had he taken on these roles, but they could also have led him down a completely different career path.

Pop Culture Trivia 🤓 Actors who adopted their animal costars!

Thumbnail
gallery
760 Upvotes
  1. Probably the most famous actor/animal duo. Roy Rogers bought Trigger after starring with him in a Robin Hood movie. They costarred in many movies together and Trigger knew over 150 trigger cues.
  2. Sophia Turner adopted Zunni, the Northern Inuit dog who played Lady in Game of Thrones.
  3. Viggo Mortensen bought two horses from LOTR, including the picture Uraeus. He also bought the titular Hidalgo (played by TJ).
  4. Tiffany Haddish adopted one of the kittens she met on the set of Keanu. She named him Catonic.
  5. Brendan Fraser adopted Pecas, who he met filming the miniseries Texas Rising.
  6. Yvette Nicole Brown adopted Mister Harley Brown after working with him on the live action Lady and the Tramp.
  7. Sarah Jessica Parker adopted Lotus, who played her character's cat Shoe Bradshaw on And Just Like That...
  8. This one is a bit of a stretch. Chris Evans was filming a scene for Gifted in an animal shelter. Upon learning all of the animals were actually adoptable, he looked around and found Dodger! The rest is history.
