Making a change - No more Sob Stories. See Details:
Hi all. Well, things have certainly taken a turn in this group. And my apologies I haven't kept with it or done something sooner, unfortunately I've had a few deaths in the family/friends circle and a wedding and MANY family events arranged last month and earlier this month. Reddit had to fall by the wayside for a while!
I am seeing the issue - far too many sob stories, support requests - with absolutely NOTHING about the issue of poverty within them.
I wanted to keep the group open to poverty stories in the context of poverty discussion - not become a 100% support group for those who are flailing/falling/fearful.
So....here's the differentiation. If it is 100% sob story OR has no relation to poverty whatsoever - report it and we'll remove it.
If it is a story with context and related directly to poverty, or has a discussion of the systemics of poverty with the context of a story - for the moment it's fine. We'll need to clarify the line a bit clearer in the future, but for now it'll have to do.
I will be removing the "support request" flair.
I'll be setting up a removal reason with a report for you all to use.

šØšØNew Resource Added: Software Development Guide
Hey all, your friendly career-consultant, resource-creating mod here!
I recognized that people needed more than the paths of just trades, when I can do paths for EVERYTHING. So, I've written out a bunch of categories and am working to develop guides for every major path currently hiring. This (second in this series) is a Software Development Guide covering paths within the broader computer science field.
Explainer video for the other sheet to give some idea of how to use this and similar forms: https://youtu.be/zVSPSF2kykg
Other Guides already done linked on the wiki, going to try to release one every few days to a week:

General Discussion Iām 24, dealing with chronic health problems after a car accident, and my family keeps pressuring me to work. What am I supposed to do?
Iām 24 and living with my mom in Georgia. I was involved in a serious car accident in 2024 that left me with ongoing back and neck problems, tinnitus, and hyperacusis (painful sensitivity to everyday sounds). Physical therapy hasnāt helped much, and doctors havenāt been able to offer me a reliable solution for my hearing problems. I have an ongoing personal injury lawsuit that could take another couple of years to resolve.
My mom and aunt keep pressuring me to get a job, and my mom constantly reminds me how little money we have. I understand her concerns and genuinely want to become financially independent, but Iām struggling just to get through each day. My physical limitations make working incredibly difficult, and even ordinary environments can be overwhelming because of my hearing.
The hardest part is that Iām incredibly passionate about filmmaking, writing, and art. I want to become a director someday and eventually move to New York. But lately, all I can bring myself to do is watch movies, play story-driven video games, and try to make it through another day. I have ADHD, struggle with depression, and feel like my ambitions are slipping further away.
Living in the US feels increasingly depressing when youāre dealing with health problems and have no financial independence. I feel trapped between wanting to build a meaningful life and barely being able to manage the one I have. I donāt want to spend my twenties like this, and I donāt expect my family to support me forever.
Has anyone been in a similar position? Should I look into disability benefits, try finding remote work, or focus on recovering while my lawsuit plays out? How do you start building a future when your health, finances, and living situation all seem to be working against you?

General Discussion Amscot
I took out a Amscot cash advance back in like July or August. I havenāt been able to pay it back yet. Itās just been one thing after another. Was hoping to do it this pay day but now since Iāve lost my car and only have a 50cc scooter I need winter gear as I get cold very easily and when I am it hurts and I canāt move. Thatās gonna take the cash advance money. My question is at what point will they send me to collections. I just filed for bankruptcy a week ago

Support Request car repo'd, need advice
Hi everyone, I'm in my mid 20s and I don't really have a great support system to ask for advice on this sort of thing. I've been dealing with some major health issues over the past couple years, and on top of it my car has broken down twice in the past couple months with expensive fixes. Due to that, I wasn't able to pay a couple of my car payments and my car was repossessed last night. It's gonna cost me about 1500 bucks to get my car back and I think I'll be able to pay most of it, but I'll likely be a couple hundred short by the time I absolutely have to pick it up. Does anyone have any advice on how to make some money over the next week? I've been looking into plasma donation and I might do a couple donations if I can. I also don't have a ton of things so selling stuff probably isn't super possible. Any advice helps, thank you so much.

I'm a uni student and I don't know how to get by
I'm a university student in my second year currently living off of £15 a week. I genuinely don't know what to do because I don't have a macbook which I really need for my course (music) to be able to work outside of university open times. I need to get a macbook (minimum £320 for a used one), macbook charger (£10-20) and Logic (£200). How do I do this...
I'm not asking for money, I just want advice on what I should do cause I also want to go out with friends (which I don't do often) from time to time. The little money that I do have all goes to groceries.
Is there some way that I can save some money?

General Discussion I don't like holidays because I have them off and it means less money for me.
I know some people might raise an eye brow and say "I hate working"!! Or something of the like. But Monday was a holiday so we had it off. So all I can think about how that's missed time and money for me. I'm a temp so I don't get holiday pay. I don't even have the money to do anything fun away.

General Discussion Is there any poverty to success stories? I'm losing hope
Seriously feel like i'm all alone, I have my bachelors degree, & it's been 2 years and still no damn luck with my degree.. I'm 24 and I feel like it's just been useless retail jobs here & there. In debt, Pretty much unhoused, and going to programs to help me get a "job" with no luck. I feel like retail is just killing me at this point with inconsistent hours... i feel like im just destined for failure at this point and have no hope at all. The only thing keeping me going is the fact that I have food stamps for now until i get a "full time" job and even then it will not be enough... how are you guys managing? Is there anybody who got themselves out of situations like
this? I'm just fkn depressed man.

Cats Are Fed
Spent my last 5.00 on 2 cans of cat food. On the way home I found a fresh loaf of Oroweat Whole Grain Oatnut bread. Wish I had some mayo and a can of tuna.

I feel Hopeless
I don't know what to do anymore. 22 F.
I have a restricting mother, who values her money on Hobby Lobby, than actually spending it on true necessities. She says that she is always paying bills, but it's my aunt that does all of it.
She has been draining every aspect of my energy and empathy for her, with the choices she's made in the past that have targeted me. Especially ever since the day she tried to restrain my access to metformin, since I have high insulin, but she believes she knows better than me. Then saying things about my weight almost every single day, when metformin is also an aid for that.
And now, with me, I don't have a job and can't afford to have stability for my basic needs. I don't have a laptop to attempt remote jobs and schooling, neither can even bother access to go out far. Since I live in the countryside (Amish territory), my mother isn't willing to take me out far, when there are so many more opportunities out there.
I'm really scared at attempting college. Since I don't want my life to end up worse than it already is. But I wish to be independent.
I'm really trying everything that I can. But I feel so hopeless and really scared that this is all there is for what I can do to progress.
I don't even know how to afford therapy, when my mother doesn't even bother getting me the access to get there either. I'm tired of being a broken and running faucet that others have to prepare bowls for in hopes that it doesn't overflow with burdens.
Does anyone have advice for this, please?

I rather have no power than no where to live
UPDATE TO MY POST
Thanks everyone for commenting on my post. Ok short story, I finally spoke to a live person from National grid. The rep was extremely helpful and had great info regarding my bill $1,236.00
I was able to get on another payment plan,
I now have to call the supplier of the electric town square energy
I am paying .19 cents per kilo
And national grid is only .15 cents
But all could change,
anyways I paid the amount to start payment plan.
I also managed to pay my rent , but still have a big balance, anyways , I am doing much better
Oh get this during the call I told the rep, ā yeah about my balance, I am not sure how to get the balance down, and I canāt work anymore hours, so to be honest with you, I rather be able to pay my rent instead of having the power turned offā. She agreed but told me pay what I can thatās all you can do
Thanks again have a great weekend
