No Q's too Dumb Weekly Dumb/Newb Question Thread

Do you have a question and are:

  • A novice and basically clueless by default?
  • Completely incapable of using google?
  • Just feeling plain stupid today and need shit explained like you're 5?

Then this is the thread FOR YOU! Don't take up valuable space on the front page and annoy the mods, ASK IT HERE and one of our resident "experts" will try and answer it. As long as it's somehow related to powerlifting then nothing is too generic, too stupid, too awful, too obvious or too repetitive. And don't be shy, we don't bite (unless we're hungry), and no one will judge you because everyone had to start somewhere and we're more than happy to help newbie lifters out.

SO FIRE AWAY WITH YOUR DUMBNESS!!!

Is it true that you can drop height from squatting heavy? Or is it just a myth? Everyone seems split on this topic

It's a myth. I don't think anyone is split on it.

I do have a friend that is 50+ who says he shrunk like 2 cm because of it

Don't believe everything you hear. After 40, you shrink just over 1cm each decade on average. Squatting with weight improves bone and muscle density which is protective against this process.

Dumb question - can you compete in equipped and not wear a suit/shirt?

And why do meet directors tell me I can’t wear grip socks (like soccer players do to prevent slippage INSIDE the shoes)?

I’ve competed without a shirt back in the day. Briefs and knee wraps. Try a shirt though if you want to try equipped

You can. Occasionally equipped lifters might hit a raw bench 1st attempt to prevent bombing out if they hit a record squat, say.

I don't know if all federations will have that rule (or care) but it's an IPF one. Why? Difficult to say.

Trying to apply logic to anything IPF does is an exercise in futility.
