Really changed the vibe when you think about it

Never thought I’d like vibe coding but now that you put it in those terms…

That’s literally what it is, I tried these coding tools and all I did was just sit there and watch, it feels awful

It's such a weird issue. In concept I want to like these tools but in practice I simply don't.

They do so many things that leave a bad taste in my mouth and in my experience they just make more work rather than reducing work. Like sure I can have it generate a 10k LOC crud app in 30 minutes but I could get the same functionality out of 600 LOC and have it be faster, more maintainable, easier to read, and easier to extend to new functionality. Not to mention the amount of bugs.

If given a very narrow and explicit scope they seem to do better but at that point it's simply faster to write the code myself so like what is the use case of these things? You know?

so like what is the use case of these things? You know?

Pointy hairs sucking each other off to get their bonuses.

As you allude, giving an LLM explicit instructions can get you something resembling what you might want, but not exactly and not in any way that's worth using. The thing is, there's enough "training material" (read: human works) fed into these quantized models that a pointy hair can do one thing: placates their ego - worst part is people in really shitty situations are being forced to keep feeding the machine.

It's easy enough for them to say "give me this Photoshop clone" and for the model to spit out a web-based alternative. In fact that's what generally happens 99% of time; a web-based clone.

Is it something they can actually put into production? Is it something they can monetize? Is it something that will work on an OpenBSD system? Is it something that has multi-factor authentication in place? Is it something that X, Y, Z, A, B, C, or any other thing that an actual Engineer would know?

You know the answer to that - Hell no, not even remotely close.

But it gives them something they can do right away: talk and see - it's the adult equivalent of the Speak & Spell).

They say "I want X" and it nearly "immediately" gives them something approximating "X" enough they are happy - on the flip, they tell an Engineer "I want X" and the Engineer might say something as simple "Do we have a legal license to do that?" .......... hard stop for them and the Engineer; said Engineer is fired and a "cheaper" alternative is brought in to do what they want without question, legal, ethical or otherwise.

A more apropos example (before AI) for those who know: how much time have you spent making the WebSocket connection or C++ driver just 10% more efficient, or made those SQL queries 5% faster so that the 5000 people who rely on those queries can save 10 seconds each (which equates to 13 man hours per query saved, which is a shit-tonne of money!!) ..... ??????? How many of you?????????????

And what did the pointy hair congratulate?!!???!?

"My man made this icon cornflower blue!! Bonus for you!!!"

😳

This AI apocalypse isn't one because the machines can do anything better in any way - it's one because the pointy hairs can simply "chat" with it and get what they think they want - it's something they already do every damn day; they just won't shut the fuck up and won't stop mollifying themselves and each other.

ive never used vibe coding, just claude. And i have never seen claude do anything for me that i didnt already know how to do in order to walk it through what to do. otherwise it gets it wrong, changes all your stuff just to do something in that run, or just lie about whats wrong. In order to use it in any meaningful way not only did i need to already know how it all should work, id have to describe it in great detail and predict what claude is going to fuck up as well and tell it not to do all of those things on top of what to do. and then if it dont understand it will just do what you told it not to do anyways. Can it be useful to speed up small tasks or quick prototyping menus and stuff, yes, but i dont see how everyone gets it does it for you from all of that. maybe i should try vibe.

This has actually not been my experience at all. I have it ripping through both embedded C and Python desktop app creation with very little intervention. The shittier models did suck at programming, and then they got better

Read the documentation during generation and get ready to debug.

So effile towering

So you don't need to give instructions to vibe code now?

Im gonna refer to that the same from now on xD
