Sunday, however, brought a crisp slap in the face and a hard jolt back to reality. A desultory 13-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field was every bit as regrettable as any of the other 16 league-high defeats since 2018 in games the Ravens led by double digits, perhaps even more so.
The Ravens led 10-0 late in the first quarter, looking on offense like they were going to get whatever they wanted all afternoon and on defense as if they might not let the Browns score. They then spent the next three quarters doing everything they could to present the Browns chances to win.
Finally, thanks to an Andre Szmyt 37-yard game-winning field goal with no time on the clock, the Browns accepted the visitor’s generosity and are now in first place in the AFC North as a result.
“That’s one where we definitely should have won,” said Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton. “In this league, you let a team in the game, especially at home (in) this division, you let a team stay around, they’re going to find momentum. We got to go out there and get some stops and ice the game at the end.
“It’s about playing complementary football, and we got to pick our offense up when something may happen. It was a team effort today. It was a team loss.”
However, Hamilton, one of the most thoughtful Ravens, didn’t have an answer to why these avoidable losses keep happening — and he’s long tired of fielding the question, understandably so.
“I’m not going to sound like a broken record,” Hamilton said. “It’s ‘Groundhog Day’ with this question. I’m not going to give you an answer. I really don’t know. Sorry, that’s the best I can give you, but we’ve had this conversation so many times. I don’t feel like addressing it again.”
