There's specially-made binding tape now. Idk if Babs cares about her wellbeing enough to use it, but it is a thing.

you don't wrap it around like that, it's one to two pieces per breast pulling them down and back towards the armpits - no safe binding method is done with wraps like that around the chest/breasts.

Good to know, thank you for the correction. I personally just use a regular binder so I didn't realize there was a specific method to it.

You can use as many pieces as needed, though it's hard to get above four per. The main thing to avoid is binding around, all pieces of tape should land under your armpit (or shorter, for those with larger chests this is what guides mean about layering, getting most of the tissue pushed to the side first, then a larger second piece to go over and fully reach the desired binding effect), never wrapping around to the back. I would highly recommend looking at the Trans Tape YouTube channel as they have many guides for all different chest sizes.
Another big thing to keep in mind is skin tension, the skin in the center of your chest shouldn't be stretched out. All pieces of tape should be in a position where they're catching mostly tissue with the first "adherence point" and this should be a completely flat and unstressed inch or so of the tape (rub it as well to heat up the adhesive and make it stick better) then you can stretch it to bind, then the last inch again should lay flat and unstressed.
The adherence of Trans Tape is top notch, and as such you really, really, really, need to use oil for removal. I almost ripped off my entire nipple because I was going too fast once, not that I skipped the oil- I still have the scar. Someone told me once and I'll never forget it now "you aren't taking the tape off, you're taking your skin off the tape." I prefer baby oil because it's gentle on my pretty sensitive skin otherwise and it helps moisturize your skin. Quick hot shower with a rough washcloth to get any remaining adhesive off, and then take at least two to three days to rest before rebinding with TTape, longer if you have any blisters, which are to be expected from time to time.

I see on trans tape that if you have a particularly large rack you do bind it around the chest, but it’s just for that singular case afaik

u/piglungz 8d ago
I still don’t think you’re supposed to wrap it all the way around. For a bigger chest you may need extra strips across the middle and you’d need to pull the tape further back past your armpits than normal but it shouldn’t be around your back.

u/catshateTERFs 8d ago
You’re not cuz it’s gonna compress the ribs and chest too harshly if you’re taping like that
Yes to needing extra anchoring and longer tape, no to going all the way around.

Forgive my ignorance but uh...wouldnt this help the back issues for the more well endowed? I feel like itd lend more support? Or is that still dangerous?

u/Skitty27 8d ago
One to two if you have a small chest maybe. I have to use 3-4 4 inches large strips.

u/FoolOfASquirrel 7d ago
You can also use sports tape instead if you don't want to order specialist stuff. Get some strips, start near the centre of the chest, have an inch or so that isn't stretched, then stretch the tape pushing the chest back, and end of with another inch or so of un-stretched tape. If the tape is too thin, use multiple next to each other.
Before applying it cover up your nipples to avoid that hurting - you can cut a circle of tissue and put that over while applying the tape, or stick it down before hand with a plaster, or just cover the nipples with large-enough plasters. (Plaster in American English is bandaid I think?)
If the tape comes in a roll, cut the corners to be round first so their won't be corners to peel off.
Using oil (baby oil or vegetable oil) can help loosen the glue and get them off again.
You should do a small test or your arm or somewhere to see if your allergic to the adhesive before applying any tape to your chest for the first time.
(I realise we're just talking about a fictional character, so my advice won't affect them, but thought I'd put it in case other people who would find it useful come by)

Paisley has so much emotional caretaking to do hanging out with Bingus and Babs.
And poor sweet Babs... so much trauma in this character, I love her.

Poor babs :(
I wish I didn’t get it, not that extreme but still, wearing baggy clothes and a tight fitting sports bra to hide still a couple years into transitioning because I was diy at the time and doing it in secret even though I was sorta already out

u/QuestingKola 8d ago
I used to do this. It suuuuuucks but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to be taken seriously.

Never seen a trans woman binding. I always associated that with trans men. I know boymoding is a thing, but I guess I never considered they'd do something like that.

u/rawdawgcomics 8d ago
Yeah that's true but that's almost for the opposite reason. She's doing it here to conceal her identity not embrace it
22
u/Pretty-Yam-2854 8d ago
Boymoders will do it to hide breast development. I just wear a thick ass large or XL baggy fleece hoodie 24/7 so no one can see, even then the large is starting not to cut it lol I’ve gotten some looks.
Also binding can cause damage to the breast buds that are forming which is the last thing I want to do.

I knew Babs was trans, but thought in the other direction
Edit: I was very confused

u/Xalimata 8d ago
Based on the other comments she is boymoding to hide her transness from people.

Ohhhhhhhh! I get it now! Thanks for the explanation. When I grew up, trans care was heavily gatekept by psychiatrists who thought it was a mental disease, and would only allow treatment if the alternative was suicide (and sometimes not then, either). By the time anyone got gender care. their parents were either helping pay for it (unicorns!) or hadn't seen them for over a decade. I was so confused by Babs taping up. It didn't even occur to me that it would be possible to hide a physical transition.
Sad that Babs is hiding herself to see dad. But OTOH, at least she has access to gender care, and can be herself all other times. Age is a strange prism through which to view the world.
Edit: Typo

She’s a trans woman!

u/VelvetMafia 8d ago
That's what I thought, and now having learned something new, continue to think. This panel is stirring some very old-timey "uphill in the snow both ways" feelings in me, but also young people today have basically had their futures used as collateral for defaulting loans, so...

u/Vampire_Number 8d ago
Honestly, when I see depictions of trans folk online I’ll sometimes ask myself “which direction are we going in” I don’t do that irl because it’s disrespectful, but when a character is called trans and has characteristics of both genders, you might not always know.
12
u/VelvetMafia 8d ago
My confusion was a consequence of my generation. I correctly assumed Babs was MtF, but it didn't occur to me that it was possible to hide a transition from family, so then was wondering if she had a very strange relationship with her dad.
I explained in another reply why I was so confused, but in a nutshell it's because people in my generation didn't get to transition and keep it a secret so they could still have parents.

This hits me in both my dysphoria as a trans-masc non-binary person and as someone who hit puberty early and had to deal with assholes. I swear so many of these characters need a solid hug and shoulder to cry on.

As a Boi moder I hate myself for concealing who i am... Sometimes I spend the nights before the next day mentally spiraling. I relate to this in a way except estrogen didn't give me big enough tits to have to hide... I am bout to switch jobs and will try to socially transition again maybe...

Yeah I'm still boymoding after 2.5 years hrt, it sucks. I can't hide them all the way with a sports bra anymore, they're D cups. As long as I'm dressed like a guy, people just assume I'm a dude with gyno, I've got a pretty manly face. Planning to transition socially if FFS fixes it.

Someone please buy this poor woman a roll of Trans Tape and teach her to use it properly/safely. This is an especially affecting Dawg comic, it’s such a hard thing as a trans person to need to force yourself back into a presentation that both hides and hurts you, just to stay safe and preserve your own peace.
Poor Babs, I’m glad she at least has such a good friend and ally to at least witness and acknowledge the weight of what she must go through.

Not sure why they had to conceal them from dad? I hope they are okay.
I love the patterns and drawings, and want to learn more about the lore of the characters. Is there an easy place to learn about these characters u/rawdawgcomics? Like a fandom wiki site or something along those lines?
Creating one could be a solid SEO boost but I'm more just looking to learn without burdening others with my questions in the subreddit. I'm sure there are others like me. If it helps your comics reach more people, that is your call. I know it can be hard to protect your art and vision so if you're only on Reddit for ease of access– I can understand that.
Thanks for reading.

The spiteful prick in me cannot relate, sorry.
Any time I'd see anything depicting this sort of experience, the only real thought that runs through my head is, "If anyone's got a problem with me, I'm happy to give em an actual reason to be. Family be damned."
Lucky for my folks, I never much cared for the self-discovery business. Always had something more important to deal with.
