I've lost confidence in myself
27k in student loan debt, homeless, no job, no savings, two SWE internships on my resume, useless cs bachelor's degree from 2025.
My parents kicked me out when I approached a year post graduation with no job. I wasn't getting any interviews, at all. I was working as a part time barista for $16/hour to bide my time but I abandoned that job when I was kicked out. I'm in a city where rents are 2000+ for closets. No reason to stay at that place.
My loans have obviously been defaulted on by now, I don't even have an active phone number for then to contact me with. No money.
I've been staggering, stumbling around gagging on nothing like a drug addict in the last week or so. I had a bike but someone broke the lock on it while I was sleeping outside one night.
Idk what I can do now. I can't get a tech job or use my degree for much of anything. I've been diving into trash cans for plastic bottles. I feel uncomfortable in my skin, I have no pride in myself, in my existence. I have no confidence anymore.
I'm sitting near a Starbucks curled up on a bench just watching the night go by. My life is over. I have no control but my future any longer. I want to end this.

Weâre about to have homeless shelters for people with bachelorâs degrees.

u/JairoHyro 1d ago
Well we did devalue of being "in college" these past decades. I'm not saying it's not a fruitful effort but the prestige is somewhat gone when someone says "I went to college" . Only IVY league schools retain that prestige

u/Training-Context-69 1d ago
What kind of boomer bullshit is this? A more educated populace is never a bad thing. Corporate greed, pointless wars, and bad fiscal policies are the reasons we are in this mess. Not people getting educated.
Besides wasnât in your generation that told everyone to go to college and not work in jobs meant for âTeenagersâ if they wanted a livable wage?
3
4
u/Turbulent_Escape4882 1d ago
The educated populace canât solve housing crisis. Was probably a softball issue on other planets, but on this one, we see it as more money for the people who control housing should work one of these decades, just not the current decade, or the 50 decades before that. Just need more money and then the educated populace can resolve this super challenging puzzle.

u/Training-Context-69 5h ago edited 5h ago
Housing is expensive because the dollar is rapidly losing value. Sure certain places in areas like New England and Coastal California have strong Nimbyism that make housing construction difficult at best, impossible at worst. But 90% of the US doesnât have âexpensive housingâ. Itâs the interest rates and stagnant wages that have caused housing to become unaffordable to wage earners. The primary factor driving up housing costs is the devaluation of the USD. If you price housing in gold, theyâve pretty much been flat for years and years now.
No amount of education could stop our government from printing more money because no one holds them accountable and people making 45k a year with mid benefits have been convinced that taxing the rich is a sin akin to murder. And fiscal responsibility with both parties but mainly republicans is an afterthought.

Where is this statistic cited?

Schools all publish their acceptance rates and info about incoming freshman classes (GPAs, test scores, etc). Just look it up.

I have. I couldn't find it to support your reasoning. Maybe you have one that does?

Will they be nicer than the regular homeless shelters?
5
u/kylelight40 1d ago
Dude, no, those are for people that are really struggling. These will be below livable standards for the people who did what they were told would make it the least likely for them to be living in this situation.
85
u/InSignificantEnTitty 1d ago
Thereâs this company that pays you to move to a new town that they need people to live in. https://www.makemymove.com/ I donât personally have experience with it but maybe with a degree youâll have luck. Nothing is permanent. Iâm sorry youâre struggling and the world can be a hard place but things can change for the positive very quickly.Â
15
u/olivegardengambler 1d ago
As someone who looked into those programs, there are a bunch of caveats.
First thing is you have to basically prove that you are a remote worker that is very unlikely to get let go in the next 5 years, or you're planning on opening a business there that isn't going to grow the population too much but will still be profitable and open in 10 years. They absolutely do not want homeless people. You also must live there for usually a few years at the very least before you get anything substantial. Thirdly, the amounts they're offering are actually not great in most cases. Best case scenario it's like 3 months rent at a decent place there.
5
u/InSignificantEnTitty 1d ago
They are always updating the offers. I could have moved to a random town in Indiana for $4,000 without a job but I donât drive so it wouldnât work. There are many cities listed with up to $8,000 in cash and some cities offer jobs because they want to grow the population. They donât have any reason to know someoneâs current living situation and if he has a tech degree it opens more doors. Positivity is difficult but negativity keeps you stuck in more long term problems. Thereâs no reason not to give every option a try.Â
34
u/InSignificantEnTitty 1d ago
Also, if you have access to WiFi, you can use Scrambly to make money from playing games, and you can cash out to Cash App instantly. Itâs worth it even to make $1 and get an apple or something. I have made $20-30 in a day with their promos at times. Usually itâs more like $3-5 but when lifeâs got you in the chokehold, that little bit can help.Â

u/ImprovementFar5054 1d ago
My parents kicked me out when I approached a year post graduation with no job.
Remember that, even after you get on your feet and start making money. Remember it when they start needing your help as they age.
That's the time karma bites them in the ass.

u/PicklepumTheCrow 19h ago
Stick them in the nastiest nursing home you can find!
10
u/ImprovementFar5054 18h ago edited 7h ago
Let em starve in the street.
I mean, that was their attitude when they kicked out their kid.
Leaving them in a shitty home is a form of caring for them. And there is no need for that.

im a dead ended software engineer myself, 1.5 years unemployed now
i keep asking where we are supposed to go if nobody will hire us for a software engineer job and nobody seems to know lol
gonna be massive unemployment when the roughly 1 million software devs in the US have their career go away and suddenly realize their skills dont qualify them to do anything other than write software
5
u/FuHaifeng 1d ago
There are videos on YouTube of ex software engineers becoming chefs, private tutors, investors, gig workers, etc.
16
u/olivegardengambler 1d ago
Gig work is barely a job. The problem with it is it's only worth doing when few other people are doing it. When a bunch of other people are, it turns into a joke where you don't make money.
8
u/Training-Context-69 1d ago
Yep the gig apps are all oversaturated now. Youâll run your car into the ground before you can turn any kind of profit.

I know you're not asking for advice, and I don't have any to give. I just want you to know that you're not the only one who's been in a situation like this.
Twenty-odd years ago, I was a fresh graduate with a useless BA in philosophy. The only job I could get was at 7-Eleven, and after i lost that i couldn't afford my rent or student loans. (I still haven't paid them off.)
I left my country and taught ESL abroad. I know those jobs are harder to get nowadays, but I was homeless and couch surfing when I got my first teaching job in South Korea.
I know it probably doesn't feel like it right now, but there is hope. I'm not going to pretend things will magically get better overnight, but being in a terrible place in life doesn't mean your life is over.

u/occultCosmos 1d ago
Iâm so sorry, we shouldnât exist in a world where this happens to anyone. I know it doesnât provide much comfort, but I promise it isnât something thatâs your fault and youâre not alone in it. I have a damn law degree and law license and Iâve been job searching for nearly two years now, this job market is just absolutely fucked.
It might be a stupid question, but have you found any resources for housing? I know they can be hard to find at times, but Iâve heard calling 211 can help connect you to area specific assistance. I really hope things take a better turn for you soon.
56
u/SadFruit4900 1d ago
I sleep in a shelter sometimes but I just don't care anymore. I lie down on a bench most days.
30
u/Substantial_Rip_4574 1d ago
Im saying a prayer for you tonight...I remember I used to work a job but slept in my broken down shit car & still completed shifts but I told myself I would do everything not to be in that situation again...you deserve a second chance & you clearly have the skill set to do something great. Don't feel discouraged because something will work out for you if you keep pushing through.
29
u/YellowDottedBikini 1d ago
Hi OP, there are opportunities to work on a farm in exchange for housing with WWOOF, Workaway, and Worldpackers. You don't have to have experience in farming to get selected. There are also shared community opportunities for free housing with organizations like Camp Hill Village if you work as a volunteer.
38
u/roamer83 1d ago
How can parents do this to their own children???? Disgusting. Utterly disgusting.
OP, I hope life improves for you and remember this when they get old and need assistance.
12
u/Suspicious-Swing-455 1d ago
Im so sorry this is happening to you. For what ita worth, you're definitely not alone in the struggle. Its not you, its a system wide issue.
And being homeless makes EVERYTHING 1000% harder. It destroys your confidence in ways no other life experience does. You're playing life on hard mode right now and its not fair. You deserve better.
The 988 crisis hotline is a place to start if youre in the US. You deserve help. I cant offer much as a random internet person, but i truly hope things get better for you soon. You deserve better, you really do.
13
u/Individual-Movie-183 1d ago
Yeah, I feel that, I'd pretty much be the same if my parents didn't kick me out, don't get me wrong they want me out of the house, they just won't kick me out.Â
Have you tried contacting any friends from high school or college and ask to sleep on their couch?Â
21
u/Repulsive-Resist-456 1d ago
Your parents are being jerks. Why would they kick you out like that???
11
u/Inevitable-Flowchick 1d ago
I assume every post is AI or creative writing these days, but for people who may be in a similar situation...don't forget to look into income-based repayment plans for your student loans. If you are unemployed, you won't have to pay anything. That would at least be one less thing to worry about right now.Â
8
u/theneuroscientist27 22h ago
Iâm so sorry youâre going through all of this. I know youâre probably hearing it a lot. Iâm currently on the employment end as well so I sympathize with you. Iâm sending you love and virtual hugs to get through this season. From one stranger to another đŤśđž

Join the reserves to bring in funding of the military for a short term. Youâll have food to eat a place to say and a steady paycheck
11
u/Particular-Finish715 1d ago
You probably qualify for substitute teaching and the pay isnât half bad and is something more fulfilling to do in the meantime.
7
u/Particular-Finish715 1d ago
But also fuck your parents! Do you have any other family or friends to lean on in the meantime? I would also target adjacent/related jobs a small businesses and companies in your area. Data analytics etc.
Something that has helped me in times where I struggled finding jobs was doing some small projects for family/friends companies and calling myself a business consultant but then you have some work to point to. Lean on your network and ask for help.
Remember you are young and nothing is forever in life. You will get out of this. You just have to be creative, ask for help, and try a lot of things to see what will work out. Sometimes life is about throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks. So much in life can change so fast! It only takes one yes. Keep believing in yourself.

U may need to apply out of state or to a big city because your degree is not useless and in a place with lots of jobs you should have some option.
I am sympathizing w u tho I work part time retail cause I cannot find a job as a recent grad yet either, however, Iâm confident I will land something
16
u/SadFruit4900 1d ago
I'm already in a big city that supposedly has lots of jobs and applied nationally
0
u/midKnightBrown59 1d ago
You should apply locally. National is very competitive. Have you gotten interviews?
1
u/Slow_cl_ap 1d ago
I would presume by the statement of being in a big city with supposedly a lot of jobs and applying nationally, OP has been applying locally.

u/Pimpinluigi 1d ago
I am not sure if you wanted to vent or looking for some ideas. I am not in your shoes and cannot imagine what you are going through. I wish you the best and hope to hear some good news from you in a future post. Just hang in there, with some hope, who knows what your future holds.
Nothing wrong with talking to some military recruiters. With a degree you can go officer. And whatâs wrong with just seeing what they could do for you? Plus they will give you everything you need to stand on your two feet. Worst case, you do a one contract(4-6 years depending on job), get some skills that will open up more job opportunities. From mechanical, electrical, cyber security, medical, police, IT and more different jobs. Iâm sure you can find something that interests you. The military set me up in my career (no college just the military experience). I was enlisted and when I got out, we got free recruiters that work with us to help find us jobs. Could even look into the military reservist if you want to start local.
I know the military is not for everyone. But it can give you a leg up and set you up for your future career plus references and help from the people you worked with.
You can also look into post office or maybe blue collar jobs as well. From construction, trash collection, UPS driver , to traveling maintenance crews for power plants. Companies like GE Vernova and Siemens. They are hiring a bunch since the boom of data centers. You could look into data centers as well.
Just donât give up hope. Have some faith in yourself and you will get yourself back on track.

u/monou95 1d ago
My brother graduated with an engineering degree from UC Berkeley and even that couldnât help him coming out right at the dot com bust. Joining the military made a huge difference in his life and his degree was worth so much more there. He didnât stay in it for life in order to prioritize his wife and starting a family, and it was somewhat difficult still to adjust back as a civilian, but it helped instill him with a level of fortitude and perseverance I think that has made him the wonderful father to my nephews he is today.
4
u/DisastrousWalrus9527 1d ago
Are you handy? Often apartment complexes will provide a cheap or free apartment for a maintenance worker. You could also look into working for disability organizations to be a house parent.
7
u/olivegardengambler 1d ago
Both of those are extremely competitive, and if they live in an urban area with high rent, even more so.

The truth is its hard for all of us. We have different flavours of hard though.Â
Conservatives push this fallacy of people coming from abroad and instantly having a leg up, but the truth is if you're the kind of person you describe:
You will come with a detailed plan and your baseline of success will be much lower (i.e. just being able to save 100 dollars after working 60 hours a week is a great result for these guys. There is no fun or luxury).
You will have or seek a community to support you actively.
No one will talk about the examples where it goes wrong and you fail.
There's a hardship that western people just can not or will not tolerate on the path to success.

As someone in a similar situation to OP Iâm sick of people saying this. I would be homeless rn if it wasnât for my partner and joining the military literally isnât an option for a lot of people if they have documented mental health issues or a disability. I couldnât join the military even if I wanted to because of my medical history. It would be an automatic denial.

The other thing is that they just seem to ignore advice, or will take any negative feedback as the truth. If they can piss clean and write a cover letter explaining their situation, they should be able to find a job.

Don't give up sweetheart. Message your aunts and uncles and see if they'd take you in. Even just go see a family member and tell them. I'd recommend getting a restaurant job, it's social and lots of people just figuring things out there (while making decent money cuz of tips).
Save up for a decent car and you can live in it. Go to a shelter that can take you in til you get your feet up :)

Your degree isnât worthless. You can absolutely get out of this situation.Â
16
u/SadFruit4900 1d ago
It was a computer science degree. It's 2026.
It's worthless.
5
u/neurotic-proxy 1d ago
I know youâre depressed but itâs not worthless. If I could go to school again, Iâd be do compi sci. Iâm looking into transitioning by digital marketing career into business analysis etc and a technical background would expedite that process. Do a full audit of your skills and see what other industries you can target. Also it took me a year to realize but the cold applying method of entering the job market is breaking down. It seems like portfolios go farther than resumes in the eyes of employers. Iâm trying to reach out to small businesses to see how I can help a bottleneck problem they might be having, then eventually put that on a portfolio. That seems to be more valuable in their eyes
5
u/InSignificantEnTitty 1d ago
The degree is a societal litmus test that shows you can stay dedicated to a goal for 4 years. You already covered the first part of the job hunt.Â
2
u/MotorcycleAussie 1d ago

Iâve seen a couple comments here with what Iâm about to say. Look into the military. Iâve been in the Navy for 7 years so far, and itâs kept me stable, employed and allowed me to keep living my life. Plus you get the GI Bill. Helps take care of those student loans. Free college and all. And your VA loan. Thereâs a lot that comes with it. Sure, itâs not for everybody but itâs a sure fire way to keep your head above water. Regardless of what you choose to do, keep your head up. Donât quit, keep grinding. If you have any questions, feel free to message me. I can try to help with any questions you may have about the military. If you think thatâs what your next step may be. Youâve got this.

What kind of parents kick their kids out onto the street to be homeless. Shame on them.
Like why even have kids.
