hat she is giving up her kitten. It might not hold up in court, but it sure as hell cemented it in her mind

I have heard of kangaroo courts... but now kitten courts?

ALL animals deserve fair legal systems!

Tell that to all the murdered spiders of the world.

As a representative of Bird Law I whole heartedly agree.

Hey, you guys where on The Simpsons in the episode where Bart accidentally killed a bird. You guys are harsh but fair. I fully support you.

I'm pretty sure it would hold up in court. This sort of situation would end up in small claims. Basically, there are no lawyers and you don't need to have the same amount of proof/evidence as you would in many other proceedings.

It might not hold up in court

I doubt it will. Chances are OP wrote something like "[Roommate] freely agrees to give up kitten to [friend]", in which case it doesn't fulfill the requirements of a contract. A decent lawyer can argue for Roommate's case that there is no consideration in the contract.

That said, it sounds like Roommate's life is a colossal mess anyways so it's highly unlikely she'll ever figure that out. Chances are if she'd ever want the kitten, she'll remember what she signed and will think the law is against her. Which I'm okay with, because the kitten doesn't deserve an owner like that.

But it would probably end up in small claims, which doesn't use lawyers, and the paper indicates that the roommate had intended to give up the kitten. It wouldn't be like "well that's open and shut she gave up the cat," but it would be a piece of evidence in the whole of the case.

Yay! Not your circus not your monkeys! Congrats on it mostly working out. Sorry you're out some money but just chalk it up to the jerk tax.

Can't believe she was just going to get rid of the kitten. What a monster.

Yeah, I feel sorry for whatever and whomever Jane is responsible for in the future.

Exactly. When kids or animals get involved in theses messes, that's when it stings for me. Adults can make whatever hash of their lives they want, and can ask for help if need be. Kids are limited in the autonomy they have, animals have none.

I drove 2/3 of the way across the country with my 2 cats. A 15 year old and a then-7 month old. We put up with cat chaos in motels, stress pukes, statement poops, and had to pay for a set of clawed curtains.

I got asked why I didn't give them up and just get 2 new cats when I got here. Because 2 new cats aren't Piper and Darwin. Two new cats are strangers, these gents are my family. I don't have any obligation to two cats I haven't met yet, I promised these guys forever.

You don't just throw animals out like an out of style sweater. This is just further proof she's a terrible person.

Just give them up and buy new ones?!?! Fuck off.

Seriously. Makes me sick that so many people have that mentality towards pets.

Hey people!! Don't get an animal that will be 100% reliant on and dedicated to you for YEARS unless you're going to honor that agreement. Getting a pet is like taking a vow to care for something for a decade or more. That is not something to be taken lightly.

We recently got a puppy (back in april), she's a beautiful blue pit that just can brighten your day at any time. Unfortunately, in May, we had a housefire (she was not inside, don't worry), meaning living in a two bedroom hotel until... this weekend (whoo). It's been fairly rough with a family of four, a cat (who was inside, but is perfectly healthy still (: ), and a high energy puppy in a much smaller space. A couple of more events made four into two (everyone is alive), meaning a very rough time splitting the work of the new puppy. Despite everything that changed, I could never rehome her. I feel bad for putting her through so much, but somehow she's still happy, carefree, and healthy as ever. It's hardwork with literally half the caretakers as expected, but well worth it.

I just got two kittens and I already can't imagine giving them up for anything. I'd do anything before letting them go because it was inconvenient. =/

Pets are family!!! I couldn't give up my little ones for anything.

My husband and I got our cat when he was 6 months. He has moved with us from France to NJ, to Mass, to Toronto and now to central NY. He's almost 8 yrs old and despite him peeing and pooping on our furniture we still love him. I don't blame him too much, we were living in 2 bedroom apartments with 2 small kids. Now we have a house and he can hide when he wants and come for cuddles when he wants.

So she went from pity me to you are envious of me? Jane need help, but that is not your problem. Bravo to you on how you handled this.

u/sn34kypete Aug 11 '15

Update 3: Jane broke up with her boy and is currently drunk and crying outside of my apartment, help!

Calling it

I'm so glad the kitten is OK and loved! I'm glad you are OK too and out of that situation, but I get so upset when animals pay the price for humans being assholes.

u/Throwaway03309 Aug 12 '15

Which is why I couldn't leave her. It's wasn't the kittens fault but janes.

13

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '15

Oh nice.

Well done for looking out for the kitten too.

13

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '15

You handled this superbly, OP. I just have one question.

This woman is 28???!!

3

u/CHODE_ERASER Aug 11 '15

Right?! All jokes aside, I think she may have an emotional problem or be mentally ill.

9

u/TheTableDude Aug 11 '15

Awesome update. Buy Matt something cool. And after you move in, send Mark a nice thank you note.

My last place used this system. I think the mentality is that people with money troubles are unlikely able to come up with the amount. Sort of like a financial hazing process.

I suppose that's not their problem.

6

u/akestral Aug 11 '15

Hooray for the kitten! I was really rooting for the kitten. I mean, I was also rooting for you, OP, of course. I just love happy endings where all the ancillary characters also get happy endings.

6

u/wishforagiraffe Aug 11 '15

I know you're happy, and I'm glad it worked it so well, but I fully expect that this isn't the end of the story. One of the common terms of a lease is to maintain electricity to the unit. I think when Mark goes after Jane for being a giant waste of space, you'll be hearing from Jane again. Keep all your documentation for at least a few months after your original lease term would have been up

2

u/Throwaway03309 Aug 12 '15

It wouldn't surprise me, that is a good idea :) thank you

6

u/MoonshineExpress Aug 11 '15

I love it when things work out like this. Well done for handling it all so well.

I blocked her on social media, just as a precaution but if she does and any of my friends (not that there are many who are friends with her too) believe her shit, well they aren't really my friends are they?

3

u/BeesForKnees Aug 11 '15

She is crazy as hell. Thank god you got out basically unscathed. Think of the damage if you spent even another 6 months there.

2

u/Slumpt Aug 11 '15

Good on you, OP. You handled this situation perfectly. On the downside, I'll be looking to find a roommate soon and all these reddit horror stories are freaking me out a bit.

u/Skellum Aug 12 '15

Rachael?

1

u/DRHdez Aug 11 '15

Good riddance to her. Yay on the new place!

1

u/BlatantBravado Aug 12 '15

It's amazing how things work out. Congrats on getting a new start.

If we deleted every post in this sub when someone said it sounded fake, we'd have no posts in this sub at all. Some stories are over-the-top obviously fake, but a lot of this is real. It's amazing how selfish, arrogant, and/or unaware some people can be; I've had enough life experience to know a lot of this shit is the real deal.

Bait and switch you fell into it since Mark is a sweet talker. Rule number one Never and I mean Never trust a leasing agent/owner. You just signed blindly for an apartment that you have never seen. Google the complex you are moving into and read the negative reviews. He will put you in an apartment that he never would show cause no one rent it. Good luck to you.

3

u/Throwaway03309 Aug 12 '15

Actually I didn't. I did go see the apartment, he did show it to me. I have a written agreement for the payments we agreed on and the lease has the apartment number on it. I walked away with a copy. Not everyone is evil.
