Discussion Missing a place that no longer exist

Post image

Sorry. Just feeling nostalgic. Used to come here alot with a relative that passed away some time ago. Remember when you can order a chicken teri don for $7. The crew was great. Chinese owned but the sushi chef at the bar was Japanese had great memory of remembering customers names.

Went to sushi lovers on same area last night and it was ok. Just reminded me what this whole area used to look like. That great one supermarket next door was packed all the time.

Ahh, back when Happy Day was good and cheap.

I went to this Happy Day with my mom every Saturday morning growing up, got the "Spanish" omelette, some beef satay instant noodles, and ice lemon tea. What a core memory, I still remember my order lol.

I live in (downtown) Toronto now but every time I'm back in Richmond visiting my parents I always still go to the Walmart Happy Day lol. It's no longer that cheap but the portion sizes are still very generous.

I sit here in Toronto and think about Richmond food all the time lol.

Back when it was still called Happy Date!

Another place I miss is Bob's Sub. Me and my friends used to go there all the time in high school for cheap as hell food after school.

Not having Bob's Sub now is actually PAINFUL.

Yes! The owners were always so nice.

I went to high school in Vancouver but had some friends that we all lived along #2, we'd go home together but every time we missed the Canada Line to 402 connection (back when the stop was on Cook by the Staples) we'd stop in at Bob's.

u/jobin_segan 3d ago

Is Bob’s the one that was just beside the staples? The entrance was just hidden from view due to a little sheltered area right?

3

u/pilotharrison 3d ago

Yea Bob's was facing the the parking lot and was next to that sheltered pathway

Bobs subs moved to imperial st in burnaby but the prices went up a lot and they weren't as popular. They closed after a while. Pretty sad. Nothing like it anymore anywhere nearby.

Man I haven't been on Park Rd in years especially since I live in Toronto now, but I went to this strip mall many times growing up. Doesn't help that Park is now all bland condos so no point to swing by every time I'm back.

My mom and I used to go to Happy Day Cafe (they're at Walmart now) every Saturday morning. One of my elementary school classmates' mom used to work at Great One...

The Szechuan restaurant in this mall was really good too and a few times I've been to the noodle/congee place...

I've never been to Toraenbo though, they always had their kitchen back door open to Buswell and the grease smell gave me an ick...

Happy Day is great too. Love their beef brisket on rice. I only went few times when they were on park road but love the Walmart location.

u/pilotharrison 3d ago

I'm married to Mui Garden's curry beef brisket on rice and I would never cheat on it lol.

Salted fish and chicken fried rice is my usual go to at Happy Day, and they don't skimp out on the salted fish

u/ill_diddy 3d ago

yoo mui garden is the bomb. yes to their curry beef brisket. That sauce is something else. Its so good and soo rich, i usually have one to go so i can eat it with more rice at home

2

u/pilotharrison 3d ago

Yeah I'll get it in the afternoon tea set and get an extra bowl of rice with it. Love Mui Garden, it's on my must stop by list every single time I'm back in BC.

I think they have an East Van location on Victoria (?) but the Minoru one is the OG and tastes better there.

We frequently visited that mall when I was a kid. The grocery shop, the original Kam Ho fam restaurant, the congee place, happy date, good times.

And that video rental place

There's a new sushi restaurant in its place in that area now

Just going to butt in... Tai Hing Congee House in the same block for affordable congee combo

6

u/acergum 3d ago

They were cheap and good but then they raised prices and decreased portion size. But they were really good back in the day. Full congee breakfast for $5.

1

u/boipinoi604 3d ago

Alternatively, Bobs sandwich around the same price for quick and greasy breakfast

4

u/verifqueen 3d ago

Loved that place and (not much) their original sticky carpet.
Tai Hing was my family’s goto breakfast place. I am so welled up now missing my parents and their favorite orders.

u/TOPEC 3d ago

Oh my totally forgot about this place, u just brough back some forgotten memory lol.

u/jwongathon 3d ago

i think the successor of this place is Ajishou which also recently closed at Central at Garden City

Random question but similar vein of question. There used to be an ayce hot pot place either on park or cook that I enjoyed but can't remember the name. I remember it was on an upper floor and not ground level. Does anyone remember the name?

2

u/Caspartius 3d ago

You might be thinking of the original Ninkazu? It was on Browngate and Hazelbridge, upper floor. Goated ayce place, now merged with Richmond Sushi and quality plummeted.

2

u/TheBarcaShow 3d ago

Nope, not ninkazu, I do remember that place. And Richmond Sushi, it was a place that did hot pot

1

u/jyuunbug 3d ago

Toyotomi?

1

u/TheBarcaShow 3d ago

Yes! That is the one!

6

u/Lanky_Bag_2096 2d ago

I don't know if anyone remember before this place it used to be a pho place, great pho. Unfortunately closed down in the 2000s

6

u/Initialyee 2d ago

It's was my friends pho restaurant....I believe it was called Saigon Star.... One of the only pho places without a number attached to the name.

On a side quest. If anyone can explain why so many pho places contain numbers....that would be great!

Omg you know Wah Gor??? How is he doing? we used to go there all the time 🥺 we go there soon sooo sooo often, we chatted all the time. I missed them and I believe there was a lady there too, they were such the nicest people, I still remember my fav pho there is, quail egg pho there. Please tell them I remembered them and I said hello. Wishing them the best 🙏🏻

2

u/Initialyee 2d ago

Haven't been in touch for a while. I wish I could tell you how they're doing. I remember them talking about how their noodles were freshly made.

10

u/No_Donkey_4710 3d ago

Used to go there all the time growing up. Staff were so friendly and welcoming. Always think of this place when I go out for cheap sushi 😂

u/Xbomdaranox 3d ago

Grew up going to Great1Supermarket and Torarenbo. Heard from the servers there that the owners opened Ajishou at the Walmart mall when this strip mall was getting demo'd.

3

u/ill_diddy 3d ago

What seriously? I never got a chance to check Ajishou. They closed down earlier this year.

6

u/Xbomdaranox 3d ago

I would say they pivoted to a slightly higher class of sushi. Toranenbo was more family style and I used to go every week or every other week. Ajishou was never busy and as the prices continued to creep up I figured they were on the way out.

1

u/ill_diddy 3d ago

Yes, i remember looking inside Ajishou and was like this is too posh for me but had no idea it was same owners. I figured They have too many competition at that Walmart area. Off topic but Nandos there is the best in terms of vibe and atmosphere of all Nandos

3

u/No_Donkey_4710 3d ago

Can confirm, tho definitely doesn't hit as much as back then

4

u/FrequentMinute1197 3d ago

I remember there being a meat store and grocery store that my family would go to when I was young. Tom Lee used to be at the front where I had piano lessons. Honestly missing old Richmond with the original layout of RC too.

6

u/barbrawr 3d ago

Man Torarenbo was sooo good back then! The new place Ajishou is a definite step down unfortunately

5

u/IBGDRGN 3d ago

I miss that congee and soy sauce shop that was in the same strip mall!! Haven’t found anything similar ever since

2

u/cravingnoodles 3d ago

There used to be a AYCE sushi place across from lansdowne. It was in a small plaza which got torn down and replaced with a condo building on Cooney road. Gosh, i wish I remembered the name...

2

u/lamsir21 17h ago

Had my first date here! Married for 15 years now.

2

u/jc77909 3d ago

My mother used to have a beadstore in the strip mall across the street from this one. Would always go to Happy Day and the congee house for food. Good times

2

u/guitar_pic 3d ago

Man.....before that, it was a Taiwanese restaurant there. I used to go and eat $4 meatsauce on rice during my breaktime.

Miss Happy Date as well when they had their $3.99 afternoon menu specials.

2

u/nameless_me 3d ago

Wasn't this on the corner of the original cantonese place Happy Date? Fantastic memories of the late 1980s here.

Missing bobs and newtown in Richmond…also missing the fried chicken they had in happy day 😭

1

u/footcake 3d ago

Man, what a time to have been alive 🥹🥹

1

u/gabe22400 3d ago

I’m surprised no one said Sakura Sushi. It was near Bob’s Sub.

1

u/cl9ud 2d ago

I was looking for this comment! There's nothing like Sakura nowadays. My favourite was their negitoro rolls!

1

u/LarryLeLamJam 3d ago

I miss that complex, I used to go to that Happy Date all the time with my fam and that old guy would always sit by the bathroom. There was that small hole in the hole, I forget the name, had the best xiao long bao…

Rooster's Quarters

1

u/benz05tsx 3d ago

Funny thing is, I grew up here and never went to that restaurant before. Maybe because it looked expensive. My friends and I just go to Richmond Sushi instead, or koto or Matsuyama back then.

1

u/Andykeung 3d ago

I was a part time server for some time back then . Good memories
