Afghan Chopan Bakery & Diner

The couple's combo feeds us for days, and we always think we can be civil and split a ferni for dessert, but end up fighting over who gets the last bit because it's so goddamn good.

sitting on the YVR skytrain next to a stranger

Stranger: Have any exciting plans?

You: Yeah! How about you? Where you headed today?

Stranger: Chicago. And you?

You: Wendys

u/JauntyGiraffe 1d ago

Used to do this for Harvey's when it was at YVR

u/Fun-Region-1576 1d ago

u/Parkingstealer 1d ago

2

u/Fun-Region-1576 1d ago

So just the location makes it special?

1

u/Dazzling-Rub-8550 1d ago

Banzai Sushi

Massive portions, good value, their salmon is always fresh and on point due to very high turnover, tuna can be a mixed bag as occasionally it's semi-frozen (you can bring it up when ordering).

I especially like the imitation crab + mayo mix that they use for rolls, as well as the amount of masago they put in their chopped scallop.

My go-to: House roll (half), chopped scallop roll, negitoro roll, appetizer sashimi (salmon + tuna)

If you're looking for a slightly less casual sushi experience while retaining very good value, Sushi Lovers (Park Rd) is excellent

Honorable mentions: Matsuyama for their late-night menu, Gami Sushi for their spicy tuna and alaska rolls, Sushi Mura for their 'Tune On Fire' roll and ambiance to value ratio.. All of the above are in the $-$$ category.

I was hungry when writing this!

6

u/tyrwlive 1d ago

They started charging tips for takeout which is kinda crazy

11

u/Parkingstealer 1d ago

I’m also a fan of banzai but IMO kind of overrated now. There rice are so tangy or something, it’s so different from before. And their rolls are rice heavy so the taste is very noticeable.

I found Samurai on Fraser, Kamura across from Oakridge, and Sushi King House on Granville (Marpole) to be comparable. Unfortunately all in Vancouver but Marpole is closer to me than Steveston area so 🤷‍♂️

They’re all fist sized Banzai style sushi

1

u/Necessary-Status-553 2h ago

If I remember correctly Banzai and Samurai are related.

1

u/Fun-Region-1576 1d ago

Fairly cheap?

15

u/kain1218 1d ago

Taco Luis but don't think its underrated XD

6

u/Dazzling-Rub-8550 1d ago

Richmond is such a foodie destination. It’s hard for a good, cheap restaurant to stay underrated and under the radar for long. Word gets out.

Yah yah ramen is my fav for decent, inexpensive ramen in Richmond. No lines whenever I go. I prefer it over Aberdeen’s Ramen Takanotsume which is also good but never hit me with the wow factor, despite its high rating on the ramen tier list.

御牛堂
Uno Beef Noodle (Blundell Rd) at 8180 No. 2 Rd #128, Richmond

9

u/Windscar_007 1d ago

No, the line's long enough.

3

u/Ohmystory 1d ago

Register via the website first before heading out ( say 30 min ) / or go right away when they open …

2

u/tempest_zed 1d ago

My wife and I have dinner between 5 and 6 pm, which is outside of the usual East Asian dining hour of 7 pm, so we rarely have issues with waiting. This routine typically helps us secure seats wherever we go, including Uno Beef.

6

u/Competitive-Ant-6668 1d ago

tian shi fu no.3 road (the one near walmart has completely different menu, not that one)

1

u/mreyebags 1d ago

I actually prefer the walmart one a lot more. But i might have had a one off experience 🤷🏻

3

u/TheOtherSide999 1d ago

Typhoon, their boiling pot is worth imo.

3

u/Rare-Source5240 1d ago

Nobi Nobi straight fire, very good Japanese food with fresh veggies and meat deliveries every day

5

u/onewaycheckvalve 1d ago

President’s Plaza Food Court, new place that only has signs in Chinese.

0

u/Fun-Region-1576 1d ago

Name?

u/onewaycheckvalve 1d ago

When you walk up the stairs, on the right, second to last stall.

I’m a white looking person, she was surprised when I whipped out Alipay.

“0hhhhhh. Alipay!!!”

2

u/__Mike__Hawk 1d ago

I got worried when you mentioned "whipped out", but nevermind.... 🤣

1

u/siriusfast 1d ago

How do you have ali pay. I thought it all govern by the Chinese phone number, which only can be bought when you are in China?

Kari house in Steveston, and the concession at Garry point park.

1

u/AdditionalQuote4844 5h ago

Nyonya house in steveston. Really good and authentic Malaysian food. Probably the best Malaysian/Singaporean you can get in Richmond since Johhn3:16 in near Richmond centre is renovating

Bob's Subs

4

u/Parkingstealer 1d ago

Didn’t they closed down years ago?

-9

u/__Mike__Hawk 1d ago

Yep, but a 6" Super Sub hot off the grill would blow any competition today if it was in the here and now.

5

u/stevieraygun 1d ago

I always got the 12 incher so I could have half the next day.

-2

u/Smittenkitty43 1d ago

Firehouse Subs is way better imo. But not in Richmond.

2

u/__Mike__Hawk 1d ago

Have you ever had a Bob's Super Sub? That place was so niche and the Korean couple that owned it were good people. It kinda reminds me of Bon's Off Broadway in Vancouver, only less messy.

-4

u/hirokidude 1d ago

One Cafe Lansdowne

3

u/Freshbread06 1d ago

Definitely not underrated 😂

1

u/Parkingstealer 1d ago

Ohhh what would you recommend from there?
