He has shot like absolute garbage but i'm not like, a believer in cutting someone with a really long track record of being a great shooter because they went on a cold streak. Especially when we desperately need off-ball shooting.
Plus his contract is so cheap you really don’t gain all that much by waiving him - and the version of him that was on the hawks is way more helpful to us than anyone else we could sign at this point IMO

I get it but he's shot like 42% on his last ~900 attempts...unless he fucked up his shooting wrist or something I feel like it's kind of hard for me to believe that he just forgot how to shoot overnight. I feel like sometimes w/ shooting specialists it takes them time to get into a rhythm and get a sense of where their looks are coming from

That says nothing. Look at Kevin Heurter for example. Made 3pt shooting his main thing. Shot around 37% in his seasons Atlanta, and got an outlier year on 2022 season when he shot like 40% for the Kings, but he’s been on a downward trajectory ever since, last season he shot 30%
What we need is either consistency in the 3pt shooting or being able to play defense like your life depends on it, obviously both is much better
Sochan at least seems to defend like he cares

>That says nothing. Look at Kevin Huerter for example
that was sort of my point - Huerter’s bad shooting pretty much coincides with him getting surgery on a dislocated shoulder/torn labrum in the 23-24 season - he’s never shot the ball well after that.
If Vit has no weird injuries he’s trying to play through I’m pretty confident the shooting will come back
>Sochan at least seems to defend like he cares
I don’t think it’s either or - correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure we have the roster space for both Sochan and Vit. Besides, they don’t really overlap all that much positionally as Vit is like a 2/3 and Sochan is a 4/5

His mechanics. I’ve always heard you don’t want to jump real high if you’re shooter bc it can cause more variability. He gets a lot of air on his jumpers and I feel like his release point varies a lot. By the eye test, I would guess he wouldn’t shoot a good percentage.

His Atlanta highlights all looked like lucky shots, for the same reason. He somehow made a lot of them there, though.

He only attempted 89 3-pointers last year, let's give him a chance. He shot 42% on his 239 attempts while with Atlanta last year and shot 39% combined over the 4 years prior. The most recent 2 both being 41%+
I'm expecting some regression to the mean and for him to be back to a 37%+ shooter. I like how he can drive the ball down court too. Not just a shooter

From a hawks fan perspective his shot profile in Atlanta was hardly catch and shoot 3s. His specialty was off the dribble, around screens. Like a JJ Redick type. He’s just being misused in Portland from what I’ve seen.

I’m in favor of at least a full season for evaluation. If he’s still done nothing by the trade deadline, sure get rid of him. But dude hasn’t played that many games with us and preseason is preseason.

So we sign him during last season to add 3 pt shooting. I’ve been watching him closely since then and this dude cannot shoot. No idea how he has a roster spot.

Idk if we still need to release someone, but if we do we should definitely keep Sochan over him
