People always did love linking her to Madonna, but she was always more Janet Jackson-coded. Of course she had her own bubblegum pop sound, but she definitely was raised in the school of Janet.

This has been a conversation on the Britney sub over the last day in response to the IG post. And someone alleged that Madonna and her team spun that narrative.

I could totally see that being true. This narrative started picking up around the time Madonna started losing relevance. And if we’re being honest, Britney is the type of act Madonna would typically ridicule so the fact that she’s never done that is interesting.

that's a more interesting discussion the more I think about it, they were each kinda provocative but on style and substance I'd say Janet is way closer

id love to see them posted her occasionally; there's a whole genre of music that's basically "stuff R&B fans listen to, as well" and Britney's always in that discussion for me

Anything is possible, but I don't see that it would have been necessary for her to do. Madonna was still supremely relevant on her own from 1998-2001, with Ray of Light and Music. She had a lull with American Life but quickly rebounded with Confessions on a Dance Floor.

Britney was America's sweetheart during that time, though, it wouldn't make sense for Madonna to ridicule her. The optics of that would have been bad. A part of me feels like Madonna legitimately cared about Britney because she knew how the media was because of what she endured. And such was the case.

It's all very interesting, either way.

I mean Janet, Whitney, and Mariah were America’s sweethearts too and she was pressed by them.

And you know good and well she would have never said that mess to any of their faces.

Janet birthed her, so it makes sense. Honor thy father and mother.

I always wondered why they didn’t do a collab together…

I mean it would have been fun if they did a duet of sorts for Boys

She has always praised Janet Jackson and the influence she has had on her.

I wish they would collab

Janet really was something to behold in every way in the mid 80s into the late2000s.. i get what Britney is conveying here

She was always 100% influenced by Janet. I think Janet’s choreographer even worked with BS, right?

Some of the article/post titles I've been seeing today made me freak out that she died. Thankfully not.
