I know a dude from gaming that routinely causes international incidents with the Japanese population of a video game that like 3000 people play. I chronicle his exploits to my buddy at work who thinks its fucking hilarious

Well this game has a very fierce competitive leaderboard thats shared globally. Because of the dogshit peer to peer netcode and weapon design, being laggy provides a massive advantage. This guy lived in a fucking shack in alaska for mutliple years and played a build that happened to make absolute full advantage of his gargantuan amounts of lag. He is also just an extremely good competitive player.

Basically, he would routinely wipe japanese players off of the leaderboards with a build they referred to as the "evil lag boat." He and others using the build then began to play into it by making all their characters neon green and shitposting glorp memes of bright green alien cats with antennas.

There was also an incident in which they ascended a dude to the top of the leaderboards who was playing a character with a massive torso, so they began spamming the pregant man emoji on twitter to taunt the japanese.

Basically this lasting legacy results in leaderboard wars every few months and results in categorically insane twitter crashouts between US/Southeast asian (nebulously allied) and Japanese playerbases.

Your friend who knows your friends then goes β€œwait what buddy is this?”

Then you can either just say β€œwell it’s an online buddy I talk to” or avoid it more with β€œmy buddy out in [wherever they live]”

Ive met so many of my irl friends online..it's a shame some people are so cynical about, i know there are different risks/issues with online friendship but irl friendships can go wrong, too. The conversations i have with people online don't have any less value than the ones irl, if you're talking to a person you're talking to a person

Sometimes you can't tell people are fucking sociopaths because you can't see their facial expressions and body language.

Online friend groups can be really fun, and can lead to in person friendship too sometimes. But as long as they're not your only contact with the world I think online friendship is good
