You can signal you don't support the changes by abstaining from voting.

No voters in shambles.

273

u/TooManyCarrotsIsBad Oct 29 '25

"After careful consideration, we have opted to keep the Treasure Hunter system alive and well. There was a record breaking turnout in this poll, with over 180,000 people voting to remove gameplay influencing MTX from RuneScape. Unfortunately, a staggering 8 billion people abstained from voting, defaulting to a 'no' stance. Their silence speaks louder than any words, and we feel it is our duty to uphold their wishes."

58

u/Embarrassed-Ad-8445 Oct 29 '25

"The 320 million accounts created that hasn't changed in the last (7?) years have all abstained" xD

14

u/Other_Log_1996 Zaros Oct 29 '25

8 billion bots abstained, so Treasure Hunter stays.

yeah people who did vote with opposite views helped get rid of it good for the trolls well played

124

u/Devilo94 Oct 29 '25

Hopefully this plays a part in attracting new or returning players for the game to grow. So yeah.. vote!

Made my account in 2006 and played until 2019. I’d come back.

I stopped playing 4ish years ago. Gonna have to figure out how to log into my account when I get home from work so I can vote for this

Same, stopped after maxing, this would be very welcome

I basically stopped playing because of treasure hunter and other MTX. I've definitely felt like playing again because of this!

7

u/CombinationJunior536 Oct 29 '25

I'm hoping that a future step is making legacy mode something that isn't useless. They would attract even more players by finding some way to make legacy a bit more competitive.

I’ve never played before but I saw this news on IGN. Idk how to even play RuneScape lol. But I spend a ton of time playing games so I may give this a try’

1

u/FeijaoHumano º Oct 30 '25

Maxed sometime between Invention and Archaeology released and dropped the game because of MTX and time gated content. Came because because of Necromancy, got to lvl 100+ but quit because of Hero's Pass. I'm more than willing to come back and overlook time gated content if TH is removed. I owe a fist sandwich to that Necro boss lmao

"I feel it's ethically wrong to vote on something I have no experience with. Who am I to say that Runescape players who enjoy these systems shouldn't have the game they want?"

...

F that, I'm still traumatized from the first and last time I logged in to RS3 and was greeted with that ugly goblin and his stupid wheel.

RS3's MTX can choke on it- I'll play it out of spite once the changes are made, just as vengeance for ruining my childhood memories.

47

u/Vresa Oct 29 '25

They wouldn’t be doing this if they didn’t have a very strong indication that it will hit 100k votes.

It would be a catastrophic PR fuckup if they don’t get the number because it’s clear that they want to remove it too.

18

u/abandonplanetearth Oct 29 '25

Imagine it ends at like 18k votes. It would just show to the world that the game is dead.

The poll will pass. I predict 200k votes.

6

I think so, we get 20k players daily at the min. Think also of all the OSRS accounts, and accounts that people can make, or old accounts that people haven't used in a while. There is a good chance for 100K

8

u/praeteria Main: 22/12/2021 | Iron: 03/01/2025 Oct 29 '25

There is literally no requirement. You don't need membership or anything. Even in the impossible scenario where we wouldn't make it people will write bot scripts to create new throwaway accounts for the sole reason of voting yes.

We're already 11k in within the first half hour. This treshold won't make it through the night, calling it now.

6

u/CJKay93 Oct 29 '25

I'm not sure but it's about to breach 10k and the video is only 26 minutes old lol.

Edit: There it goes.

u/Roskal Pi day Comp cape 14/03/14 Oct 29 '25

100k seems really easy they are basically saying they are fine doing it but I guess the vote let's the community feel like we accomplished something.

8

u/TheDaywa1ker Oct 29 '25

the vote spreads the word through the osrs community and hopefully draws some over, is what i assume the real point of the poll is

Seems intentional. You could have 95000 people who may unanimously all say no and fall short.

76

I have a feeling it's a marketing stunt more than anything with them accepting it will probably pass.

3

u/jfkgoblue February 19, 2017 Oct 30 '25

Yeah people aren’t giving them enough credit, this is an absolutely legitimate risk they are taking on. Marketing this is the right move

19

u/macnar Oct 29 '25

Gotta remember that the whole reason all this is happening is because RS3 wasn't growing anymore. Everything related to this will be heavily marketed.

5

u/Gamer_Fish13 Oct 29 '25

Showmanship has value. Even if theyve already made up their minds or are under some other constraints, like gambling or mtx regulation, this is the way to go. Creating a spectacle and earning good will will directly benefit the playerbase too (those trades frozen in GE). Deception isnt always bad.

38

u/Vresa Oct 29 '25

They want a number that’s they know they will hit. Same reason there is not an option to vote “no”.

It seems clear that they already made up their mind to remove it based on the structure of this, and this “poll” is just community engagement / goodwill marketing.

10

u/Ultimaya Oct 29 '25

It can also serve as a bulwurk against shareholders attempting to oust the CEO after the inevitable temporary hit to the bottom line, as a thing they can point to and argue that the playerbase overwhelmingly demanded this change of course.

5

u/Vresa Oct 29 '25

Share holders usually want to see actual market research that shows that this is better in the long term for their investments. Which they almost certainly have already decided if they put a phony poll like this without even a “no” option

2

u/Lyfeoffishin Oct 29 '25

But does it show that? I would argue that the lack of a no feature goes against that.

If it was a yes/no poll and 80% said yes and 20% said no that shows the player base wants it. If it goes closer to 51% yes 49% no then it shows that the player base is undetermined on what they want as a whole.

IMO, I say it's absolutely fair game to market it way out of proportion. If it gets us the game that we want, cherish, and deserve, and if they heavily market the change, then it has a chance to bring in the new blood that the game desperately needs.

2

u/Pink_her_Ult Oct 29 '25

They'll fake the votes if need be. These kinds of polls/petitions are just for marketing.

1

u/QuantumWarrior Oct 29 '25

The marketing campaign to promote the removal of TH has already begun it seems.

Personally, I think 100k was a low threshold.

44

u/macnar Oct 29 '25

Of course it is. They've already made the decision to do this. This poll is for hype and publicity. They put the poll on the website and you don't need any requirements or membership to vote, just a free to make account.

8

u/vincentkun Oct 29 '25

This plus the lack of no vote and the lack of screening to only allow rs3 players to vote clearly signals they have their minds made up. Not complaining.

2

u/JustTrawlingNsfw Oct 29 '25

There's new EU regulations in the works that would force the removal anyway. This way gets them some positive PR, and I'm all for it

4

u/Azecine Oct 29 '25

I'm firmly against all MTX, but I am hoping they revisit xp progression in some skills in the integrity roadmap, especially with eventual 120 alls. Newer skills like necro are fine, but others scale horribly

I can see where they are going. You can use cash to speed up your process in game. I guess that is why they want bonus xp

1

u/Bandit_Raider Oct 30 '25

I am all for removing mtx but I am not happy with removing all those progression items in general. I see no issue with having alternative ways of earning xp for skills you don’t like if you have to earn it. Having a cap for bonus xp also doesn’t make sense to me.

6

u/RawrRRitchie Clue scroll Oct 30 '25

Your choices are vote yes, or vote yes

Great players "choice"

4

u/OsmiumOG Oct 29 '25

So to preface im voting yes to removing this. With that being said this is a VERY skewed poll. Removing the ability to vote no makes no sense. Lets say 99,990 players would have voted no, a simple bot can be setup in like 20 mins to create emails + characters and vote on them then dump the acc. 10 people running that 24/7 could hit the threshold even if 99.9% of the playerbase doesn't support it.

Even not counting bots, say there's 500k votes and 100k were yes. In this situation that means passing since 400k just didn't vote, but in traditional voting there's no way a 20% yes vote would win.

I'm only saying this because this is how a company manipulates polls by saying "either vote yes or don't vote". So while this poll doesn't really effect me since im voting yes, this is a VERY slippery slope to go down as a company.

3

u/Stephs_mouthpiece Maxed Oct 29 '25

It’s obvious they want to remove it, otherwise set a real threshold, not 100k

4

u/Miss_Aia Oct 29 '25

Exactly. They're hoping this gets as much traction as the original osrs one did. That's why it's styled the same way

4

u/OsmiumOG Oct 29 '25

I agree 100%. That's literally the ONLY reason to change the voting style this game has been built on like this.

At that point, just remove it and say you made the executive decision. don't lie and try to say THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN. This is unfair to the integrity of the game.

6

u/Iciee Oct 29 '25

This is such a lame take on this situation. Obviously this poll was going to pass, its all a marketing gimmick.

Its not a "slippery slope of poll manipulation"

4

u/OsmiumOG Oct 29 '25 edited Oct 29 '25

That's irrelevant though. I also agree this is a marketing gimmick. They should have just said "we made the executive decision to remove it finally". Instead they're changing the voting style the game has been built on in order to force an outcome under the guise of the people have voted. It's a marketing gimmick to force a narrative of the players desires because there's no way the people against it can have a say.

Now i do agree you're right that i think this poll would have passed regardless. But now we will never know. Imagine if say federal school grants went to vote and said if 10k people vote to remove the funding, it passes. If you want to vote to keep it, just don't vote. What about the other 90k that were wanting to keep school funding? It makes no sense and shows the true integrity of the system forcing an outcome.

Even if i don't agree with the people wanting to keep it, they should still have a voice.

15

Just purchasable bonus XP they said

8

Limiting purchases to bonus XP (with a cap on how much you can have banked on a single skill from these purchases), and cosmetics (with a more RuneScape aesthetic and not the random goofy sparkly stuff they've been pushing for a while).

7

u/jtown48 Ironman Oct 29 '25

Buyable bonus xp but with a caped amount, they did this for one of the experiments too.

1

u/wily422 Oct 29 '25

Where is the vote no button? Just having a vote yes is biased. I've played this game 21 years and it's getting ridiculous.

1

u/Ahayzo Oct 29 '25

I'm disappointed they're lumping the cosmetic toggle into this poll, but the fact this poll even exists is awesome, and I do think we'll hit the 100k fairly easy.

1

u/TriLink710 Oct 29 '25

For this. Curious what the full removal of the 225 xp related items will look like. I'm sure I have stuff thats been laying around for years. The one that will sting the most is portable. But I always felt like they could be reworked into a construction item.

I still think a client similar to runelite would be amazing tho. Makes quests so much more painless. Also not having Rune Metrics pro included in membership or premium is odd.

1

Why does it need 100k votes instead of just players yes or no to get rid of it?

1

It's a marketing technique, it's being removed anyway and they wanted the attention by making it need 100k votes.

Removing them from being obtained through MTX (or any other way,) is fine, but I really wish that we at least had the option to keep them, as opposed to forcefully removing them. I have a LOT, and I don’t think that even with their “amnesty period,” that I’ll be able to use a significant portion of my proteans.

u/InsistentRaven Oct 29 '25

It's probably more of a code thing. I wouldn't want to support ensuring that functionality still works a decade after it was no longer possible to obtain, especially ensuring that it doesn't have weird interactions with future items. I suspect the amnesty period will be enough time, even for those with 10k protean in the bank.

Haven't played in over a year, came and voted.

1

u/Money_Manager Oct 29 '25

So I think I voted on all 3 of my characters, but anytime after when I clicked vote yes and signed in again, it still registered as vote successful. So idk if I voted once, three times, or 8+ lol but you got my vote.

u/Embarrassed-Ad-8445 Oct 29 '25

But if.. what.. where... mhmmm... What's going to happen with this? /jk btw (although real)

Did they give a date for this if it passes? I’m assuming it’ll be new year and they’ll do a go big or go home Christmas promo this year but couldn’t find a date anywhere in the post.

1

u/tacitus23 Oct 29 '25

I hadn't logged in in 2 years because of treasure hunter. I logged in just to vote.

1

u/Quotidian_User Oct 29 '25

The skilling outfits can be earned ingame, iirc, why are they taking them away? The requirements are good. Level 70 in the respected skill and then hell of amount of hours getting fragments to get random pieces with lvl 22 invention skill (with level 80 in 3 other skills)... In the eyes of a FE.

2

u/Pork_Sword3 Completionist Oct 30 '25

They aren’t taking them away. They are removing them from being able to be obtained from treasure hunter. If you already have the outfits you will keep them. If you don’t, then you need to skill to acquire them.

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '25

"Remove Treasure Hunter? Vote YES now"

I guess they want to remove TH. As a relative noob, I never really understood the various promotions anyway or why I should/shouldn't care about them, but I'll miss silverhawk feathers and lamping my least favorite skills.

1

u/Macaron-kun Oct 29 '25

Nearly half way there already.

1

u/Komek4626 Oct 29 '25

I haven't played the game in 2 years and I voted.

I'm doing my part!

1

u/B4rberblacksheep Oct 29 '25

Up to 48k votes already

1

u/Efficient_Ad5644 Oct 29 '25

I feel like with as many people that play 100 thousand votes it nothing and its bs and its trickery because I bet you half the people who clicked on it thought it was gonna give them an option to vote yes or no not automatically count it as yes.

u/ObscureLogic Oct 29 '25

Membership is about to be so fucking expensive omg

1

u/Voltov Oct 29 '25

Has anyone seen anyone wanting to vote no to this ? I'm in a Facebook group and I am convinced it's a group full of whales at 3/4 of people are saying this is a terrible idea

1

u/The_Crazy_Cat_Guy Oct 29 '25

Once these changes are made I’m so keen to restart a fresh normal account. Played Ironman but got bored of the progression after a certain point.

Remove the xp items, leave the pvm itens (notepaper, spring cleaner, aura refreshes, DtD)

1

u/Tapir9662 Music cape Oct 29 '25

The last time I was a member, it seemed like 95% of the community were gathered around portables at Fort Forinthry and the GE (me included). Doing away with those would be a shock to the system, but I'm excited to see what RuneScape would look like without em

1

u/61-127-217-469-817 Oct 29 '25

Please add magic notepaper as pickpocket/rare drop table item instead of removing. Out of every item being removed I see this having the biggest impact on how people play the game.

Take abyssal demons for example, you can't tell me that their drop table wasn't balanced around magic notepaper. The smithing items fill up your inventory in like 30 kills, and you get peanuts per bank unless you are using a spring cleaner. Spring cleaner has an invention requirement to make which means you need 80 crafting, div, and smithing. This seems like an unreasonable change that will make slayer suck for mid level players.

u/Pork_Sword3 Completionist Oct 30 '25

Isn’t magic notepaper made with invention? I don’t think they should be removed since they are not an exclusive MTX item.

I legit thought it meant losing clue scrolls at first, man was I high lol

1

u/oldwisenone Oct 29 '25

Just let me buy cosmetics with actual money. Not "chances" at getting them that would possibly be over priced and not worth it.

Most of us are adults with expendable income. The cosmetics you put out during the trial for direct payment for cosmetics were crap tbh. There is a whole library of discontinued cosmetics that could be fairly priced. Plus anything new in the future.

1

u/CoolCrab69 Oct 29 '25

53k in 5hrs. lmao. I don't think we're gonna need 2 weeks.

1

u/Frequent-Leg-7303 Oct 29 '25

That's a weird way to poll people. Why isn't there a "no" option? What if you get 100k "yes" but would have got 300k "no"? it still passes?

I hope that everyone voting for this gets exactly what they’re asking for.

u/grof142007 The World Guardian Oct 30 '25 edited Oct 30 '25

were getting 10 votes about every 10secs it will take 12 days at this rate to hit it unless my math is off then it 12 hours

i think it the latter roughly 12hours to hit it

1

u/AdmiralDaffodil Oct 30 '25

Does it say anywhere how long they're going to run the poll for? I'm undecided about this. Yeah, people who can just drop $$$ for keys can really rocket levels. BUT I really appreciate how bonus XP helps me level quickly in my limited playtime.

Edit to add a big question here: Are we going to be able to keep these items, or are they being nuked from our accounts? If they're getting nuked, are we getting any form of compensation?

u/smiggy100 Oct 30 '25

A company doesn’t just do a vote for the community to be involved in that directly impacts their profits as a company. What is the consequences of this being taken out is what we need to know.

If whales buying of TH is keeping their profits up. Only alternative is the take up Subscription prices no ? Which then effects everyone

Or am I missing something.

I'm OotL, what's Treasure Hunter and why does everyone hate it so mich?

1

u/SirNikurasuKun Oct 30 '25

"Any votes over 100,000: Every single vote beyond this point acts as a clear signal of how far you think we should take these plans,"

Make ABSOLUTELY sure that they remember these words and we punish them, if they don't.

1

u/pharanth Oct 30 '25

Why do people hate treasure hunter so much? This is a legit question

1

u/UniversityOrdinary96 Oct 30 '25

Don’t even play the game anymore, still voted yes.

I play off and on as my account is from 2004(?). Idk I have a 20 year cape.

I really would love the option to turn off the stupid dress items. RuneScape is dragon armor (or elder rune nowadays) showing how badass (nerdy) you were. It was the true test.

I do like that I could use my random protean nonsense I’ve gathered in my sporadic 1 week returns over the years before it goes away

1

u/eladmir Oct 30 '25

I'm doing my part!

1

u/Zealousideal-Big4588 Oct 30 '25

I don’t understand how that’s gona fix things if anything quest keys are free??? Dumbass community

1

u/Milhound Oct 30 '25

Its 4,000 away from the goal.

1

u/chifton Oct 31 '25

So now that its going away, will we be compensated or get a conversion for the items we lose?

1

u/Burd3l Nov 02 '25

So they finally realized they need to prioritize player retention instead of cannibalizing their player base for a quick buck.

1

u/Horror-of-Fang-Rock Nov 12 '25

"Yes" players will find they weren't being bested by players with a TH advantage, rather, they likely just sucked at that particular moment when they lost.
