News - J-Mod reply API Project Check-In

https://rs.game/APICheckInJune

Hey 'Scapers

We're just over half-way through the year now and we wanted to provide a little insight into a project that has been cooking for most of that time...

the API project!

While this is one of the most anticipated projects of the year, we are keen to ensure that it gets its true hype moment when the time it right, so we're not going to spoil too much today... consider today as more of a peek behind the curtain rather than a preview of flashy plugins!

The idea is that YES - anyone should have the necessary tools and knowledge base to start creating something cool. That's what I want Mod Fable to strongly focus on in the coming period - building out that rock-solid tutorialization.

If we can get to a place where a scrub like me can go through the tech documentation and understand what I'd need to do to make a plugin, then we should be golden.

However, when it comes to bringing plugins "online" and available to the wider playerbase, they will need to be vetted via our dedicated Plugin Moderator to ensure they adhere to our guidelines and principles. That being said, I very much expect that the Moderator will be working with developers to help them understand how to many their plugins safe, effective and useful. They should not be a "computer says no" gatekeeper.

I hope you guys have a team in place to audit the plugins people make. The grass looks green but many other MMOs and MOBAs struggle to regulate cheat plugins and things that aren't healthy for the game

That's the Plugin Moderator position that we're currently hiring.

their job is going to be a tough one. dozens of cheat ones already being begged for in this thread alone. anything the boils the game down to a "click here" now game is not something that should be allowed.

quest helper and clue solver. these are literally a quest and clue bot.

If you consider

  • displaying extra text on screen

  • highlighting specific entities and tiles.

as cheating, there's literally nothing that any plugin will ever be able to do that doesn't break one of those rules.

That's all quest helper does. Calling it a "bot" is hilariously hyperbolic.

There are plenty of actual concerning plugins that straddle the line of what should be permissible, but if this is the line you're drawing in the sand you're never going to be happy.

I mean, quest helper is fine.

And a plugin version of cluetrainer would also be fine, otherwise we'd just keep using alt1.

Just the other day on OSRS we had a plugin that minimizes the client when you click get removed due to a high level player using it to abuse alts during sailing, to the point it looked like multiboxing and led to his temp ban.

Yeah I just saw some follow up posts about the incident. My point still stands though that OSRS gets some plugins that slip through the cracks from time to time that are definitely way too up (like the one that would call out prayers a while ago).

The best way I can see this working is that you host a permanent testing server, akin to a beta server, where players can sandbox plugin development before submission into the store.

We currently are using a beta environment for our existing community dev partners to do just that.

I'm unsure whether that will be maintained in its current form for full launch, but it would make sense.

I cannot emphasise enough this will literally make me play RS3 as an OSRS player, bloody love the initiative to make this better!

I think it's obvious we need moderation when it comes to publishing plugins! I just want to make sure that there's nothing stopping a random person from just starting to develop one at least locally. If there's some approval process or permission that needs to be granted in order to develop locally, I think that would put a ton of people off before they even get started.

That's just gonna lead to making botting easier.

6

u/QoLTech Jun 18 '26

That's interesting - how so? I don't think botting is going to get any easier than it probably already is - there's been bots forever and surely it's easier to detect using the official API than it would be by whatever methods they currently use.

However, when it comes to bringing plugins "online" and available to the wider playerbase, they will need to be vetted via our dedicated Plugin Moderator to ensure they adhere to our guidelines and principles.

So could Jagex prevent malicious actors from making bots or cheating plugins and use them personally as long as they never make them public?
