Discussion - J-Mod reply So... Plugins are launching on Monday! Who else is HYPED for plugins?
This is 1 feature I have been wanting for many years, and I think it will revolutionize the game in so many ways. Seeing agility spots hit boxes, helping with clues and quests, and even the potential for whole new game modes (tileman, brozeman, etc.). I know all anyone wants to talk about right now is ReIgnited, but plugins are going to be such a gamechanger!

A very interesting part of the plugin system: When a community developing wants to debug a plugin, they will not be using the live game, but instead connect to special servers specifically made for plugin testing, with imported character (this will basically prevent abuse of non-approved plugins).
In order to help debugging, Jagex will give plugin developers JMod-like powers on those servers. This includes setting your levels to whatever you want, teleporting via the minimap and worldmap, and presumably more. This was all mentioned at the plugin session at RuneFest (Wazzy recorded it).
So not only will plugins be awesome for the community in general, but we'll also be able to examine the game on a technical level in far greater detail than ever before.
3
u/Special_Road6603 13h ago
My only worry is that jagex might be too strict on approving plugins, but I have hope it’ll be good
3
u/zenyl RSN: Zenyl | Gamebreaker 13h ago
Yeah, we'll have to see. But so far it sounds like they are pretty reasonable.
It sounds like Jagex intends on limiting plugins as part of the review process, rather than limiting more strictly on a technical level, and provide suggestions for how community developers can change their plugins to be within guidelines. So it'll be more of a discussion with Jagex, rather than functionality just not being available.
One of the guidelines seem to be that plugins aren't allowed to tell the player what to do ahead of time. A plugin that adds tile markers to older bosses is apparently already in the works, but it sounds like it won't be allowed to tell you what to do before the mechanic actually takes place. Which seems fair.

Launch game. Open menu entry swapper. Change bank left click to load last preset. Life good.
7
u/Bretski12 22h ago
Menu entry swapper is the best osrs plugin and it will 100% be the same story for rs3
-2
u/Kazanmor 20h ago
that will be massive assuming it's not blocked by jagex for some dumb reason

u/Cilfaen More quests 19h ago
You can log on to the beta servers right now and see that menu entry swapper is already functional and implemented?
3
u/Kazanmor 18h ago
yeah but you can't even put buy all at the top in shops, nor a myriad of other actually useful features
17
u/cueballkev2 1d ago
i think im most looking forward to the menu swapper. Will allow me to do bank standing processing such as herb cleaning a lot easier without having to constantly right click to load last preset

Quest Helper will be really nice
5
u/Kieithegreat 1d ago
do we know which quests will be available monday?
14
u/JustMeHiHello 1d ago
I think there were 69 quests in the beta version, so probs around that for now. Whether they add a load more on release is a mystery.

-4
u/Letsrockinroll 1d ago
Its a little wild they've been working on this since seemingly early in the year and the quests available are rather lackluster.
6
u/FloppingLobstr 1d ago
If it is anything like the OSRS one it requires manually inputting the steps. Maybe they figured out some fancy automation for something but I would imagine not likely since there are only 69 quests so far.
1
u/Kazanmor 20h ago
they're mostly f2p quests IIRC which makes sense, they're shorter, easier and more accessible (also great for newbies)
1
u/alilingvano 23h ago
I forget where I heard someone say it, it may have been about the old school version, but essentially every quest is its own plugin. It takes a tremendous amount of work and testing for each quest to be implemented.
0
u/vulturecornbreadbass 22h ago
It's a couple of people max who are working on this plugin. They essentially have to do each quest, coding the steps into the plugin as they go. That's a hella alot of work. Maybe when plugins are released the Quest Helper plugin may become open source so the community can help add quests.
But for now I am just happy we have a decent chunk of those done! Especially Broken Home... I still need to do this on my GIM, so that will be interesting to see how that works.
1
u/Letsrockinroll 12h ago
I'm not blaming the people who were working on it. I'm blaming jagex for not putting more resources into it. Plugins are a major selling point for a lot of people and if people come back to play because of them, they will be disappointed that its only a select few quests available for quest helper.
1
u/Late-Explorer512 1d ago
I would assume a good bit of the older ones. They have not changed from what osrs has.
6
u/Audioworm 23h ago
I am sure it was because I was playing RS3 on a laptop, or had my display settings wrong, but a decent level of frustration when I was doing quests was not being able to see or correctly click the thing that was a required step. I was looking at the guides and just being unable to find whatever the hell I was meant to interact until eventually my mouse hovered the exact pixels that are valid. The colour palette and design in some areas does really not vibe with my eyes or brain, and anything that makes it not feel like an accessibility nightmare would be nice.
5
u/alilingvano 22h ago
I have to turn on high contrast mode all the time to find where I'm supposed to be clicking for a lot of things.
2
u/MMAgeezer 20h ago
I had similar issues and like the other reply said, high contrast mode is what you want for these situations. Annoying that it feels necessary though.

Is there an afk warden plugin? I know quest helper was rather limited (i do not envy that backlog)

I was informed that it was in the works. Who knows if it will be available on release day.
2
2
u/PhoenixB1 21h ago
There is, the plugin is called “watchdog” but it won’t be released on Monday.
2
u/Kazanmor 20h ago
I can imagine it's gonna be so much better than afk warden (no hate to afk warden devs) just from the fact that it can actually interact with the game to know when stuff is happening

Personally, I've been waiting years for these plugins, back when it was just a rumour.
I'm VERY lazy when it comes to some quests. Especially if they're not Experienced+.
I feel they're too much filler and take up extra time I could've spent rushing.
And sometimes the quick guide is really confusing and I have to go back and read the full guide.
(my confusion is mainly because there aren't many guides in Portuguese, my native language)
9
u/mrfoxman 1d ago
Even as a native English speaker, some guides just SUCK or are too vague. It's not an English comprehension problem.
5
u/JunkoGremory 1d ago
There's just so much these guide can do without much visual aid they can provide.
3
u/Kazanmor 20h ago
I feel they're too much filler and take up extra time I could've spent rushing.
the entire reason they made quests was to be enjoyed as quests lol, they're filler by definition because they're only there to fill out lore and give an enjoyable play experience

6
u/ProlapsedPuppy Zaros 1d ago
Ive actually never wanted to play more than when they announced plugins.
5
u/Next_Error972 1d ago
IIRC, Clue Plugin won't be out on Monday. There are some issues from Rs3 API side and those need to get addressed first.
8
u/identifyasadragon07 1d ago
So what kinda of plug-ins can we expect other than quest help and clue helper. Havnt been in the game in a long time and I'm trying to find a good time to return
7
u/Genociderain 1d ago
I mean, some Ui tracking for combat. Being able to swap around left click and shift click options for everything. Tile markers. And im sure many more to come as it gets stuff added
2
u/SpinScape 1d ago
with it launching, it means people outside of the chosen ones can start to make their own stuff too, which is huge

u/Taurenkey Best Comment of 2015 1d ago
I’m gonna do something as a learning experience. I’ll look at what is there and see what’s missing and probably create a little QoL thing. I’ve been looking at the code for the plugins in beta and I do think there’s a potential gold mine that can be tapped into.
2
u/SpinScape 23h ago

u/Sikletrynet Ironman | CA Grandmaster #222 1d ago
Tile markers, menu entry swapper, i'm sure there's more that will be coming soon after depending on the availably of the API or what that process is.
I know i have a few ideas that i'd to implement for example.
6
u/ShaanOSRS 1d ago edited 1d ago
My #1 hope is that they are planning on implementing some sort of sidebar similar to Runelite with subtabs of config/settings/information for every plugin. I don't think it's going to go well if they introduce even more menu bloat on top of the game, which is exactly what they've been trying to get away from. I haven't been keeping up with the plugin development and conversation, so I'm unaware if they've addressed that already
3
u/SmurfRockRune Old School 1d ago
Pretty sure it's just another menu but maybe someone can make a plugin that turns it into a sidebar.
2
u/Oodeledoo 20h ago
I was thinking the same, but my UI shits and throws up if I resize my window at all based on how I have things set out. I think a sidebar would make a ton of sense making this new system feel familiar to those who’ve seen Runelite but I’m excited to try the RS3 solution to this problem
2
u/Kazanmor 20h ago
for the past week my menu started deciding to randomly close the skills tab that I have permanently open on my screen, the menu code must be an absolute nightmare
1
u/Wizado991 18h ago
I was planning on making a plugin that did this, but it doesn't seem like that it is possible. I don't have access to the docs yet but the source that I have from the other mods, it doesn't seem like it would work.
6
u/NintenPyjak64 1d ago
I've been waiting for this since they revealed the plugin API on the RTR Roadmap. I'm definitely hyped and excited to come back

Great timing for clue helper, too.
Throughout Harvest Hollow, completing Hard, Elite, and Master Clue Scrolls will reward you with special Spooky Reward Caskets, each offering a chance to contain a Soul Dye!
-3
u/LordSackticklerz Ironman 1d ago
Don't get too excited. They have been working on the plugins since early in the year and the list of quests on it is pretty lackluster.
8
u/Affectionate_Pizza60 1d ago
Are we able to make custom plug ins for our own personal use or is it just that we can use the several official ones?
5
u/RainyScape RainyScape 1d ago
The plugin has to be verified by Jagex before getting sent from the plugin testing world to live game. Then everyone can use it, so you likely won't be able to use private plugins on your actual accounts.
5
u/Afraid-Inside-9205 1d ago
i wouldn’t care if everyone else can use it, would they verify it as long as there’s some generalizable niche use case?
2
u/RainyScape RainyScape 1d ago
I believe so yep! Requirement for approval is that it meets the guidelines they posted in the plugin beta newspost: https://secure.runescape.com/m=news/api-plugin-hub-beta-out-now#Tab3
2
u/IPV4clone 17h ago
Yeah I have a personal game I play with friends around opening clue caskets and had an idea for a plugin would track the rewards and assign points based on a set of rules that we normally calculate outside of the game. I started building it for alt1 but it was very difficult to do item recognition with just screen cap. The API would make this trivial and the plugin wouldn't break any guidelines but I'm curious if it would be approved since it's not really useful for the general player base.
3
u/nayfaan Clan Quest | the Wikian 1d ago
I'm hyped in a different way.
As a programmer, I'm itching to code up some plugins of my own. I wonder where we can find documentation for that though
3
u/Kazanmor 20h ago
I'm assuming they'll release a design doc on the API call and stuff on monday, right? they'd have to
3
u/BlueyLewie Buyin RNG! 19h ago
Same for me, really excited to get my teeth into the API and see what I can do with it! I have so many ideas but don't even know if they are viable yet.

I have astigmatism and certain colour combos cause a smearing effect that makes things incredibly blurry. I have to squint to keep it in focus and keeping up that effort for more than an hour tends to trigger a migraine for me. I am prone to migraines in general but had no issues with the old UI.
Imagine trying to play when someone smeared vaseline all over the text, skill page, bank and inventory. That's what it looks like to me.
Windows night light doesn't fix the underlying issue of the colour contrast between text and background. There is no one perfect colour combo that will work for everyone but at least until the UI change this year we had a couple of options and could play around with settings to find something workable.
That's why I'm hoping for a plug-in - everyone can use the option that works best for them.

At last I can properly crush my clue scroll collection without alt tabbing constantly! Overall, super hyped. Hope there also be some boss aid plugin since despite my gearing, I'm terrible following the timing and cycles of more complicated bosses.

u/sisho88 1d ago
I'm legit holding a bunch of clues to do during the halloween event for the clue plugin. I am already a fairly proficient cluer, but the tile markers will just make it so much more braindead to slam them out to try to get a soul dye or two (Though I'm really hoping more that they do the same thing for aurora dyes, because that's the one I really want).

With that said, I 100% do not expect Jagex to do this without severely fucking it up.

I would be hyped but we'll probably only see the 5 plugins tested in the beta and nothing else for at least a couple of weeks. It's not like we can immediately go ham and start making plugins, Jagex will have to approve them first before anyone can use them.

I've hardly used any other styles since necro came out and now since the combat modernisation, I completely suck at bossing with magic (despite having almost all of the full bis gear now).
Really looking forward to job gauges dropping since I saw it has the other styles linked in it as well - hopefully the magic one will help me get properly good 😅

2
u/PrimalMoose Primal Puppy 17h ago
It's one of the plugins. For necro it gives you an overlay that tracks your soul and necrosis stacks along with cool downs like bloat, t90/t95 spec etc. It's really helpful given how busy the buff bar gets

Not a day has gone by that I haven't missed necro job gauges since the interface update broke it in alt1. The other job gauges also have their uses, especially for magic in helping me notice when my special attack CD on my t95 dual wield weapons has reset, and it's far more responsive than the alt1 version.

I might actually start playing rs3 again. It just feels so clunky compared to the qol provided by plugins in osrs and I’m hoping plugins fix some of that, the menu entry swapper alone would help greatly

I won't be using them and I'll be honest I'm concerned about this warping the meta and culture of the game, such as making people feel compelled to use them, especially in multiplayer settings
0
u/Vyxwop 23h ago
Yup. I personally think plugins are one of the worst things that Jagex allowed in OSRS. It fundamentally changed the way the game is played and changed the expectations of players. It made the game less about the journey and made it more about rushing through content, at least for the average player.
Plugins IMO just gamify the game too much.
0
u/KeyStranger 1d ago
This. It will be just like on OSRS where it'll give a very good advantage using them, simplifying the game.
But is it bad? Most likely not for people trying to jump onto the runescape franchise.

I wish they would have let us have access to the api backend so we could have our plugins already built for the live game. Sucks they didn't. Ive got 5 loaded in the chamber as soon as its available.

I know they bring a lot of qol and I will probably end up liking them but I am concerned it will end up like addons in wow where they have to design encounters and gameplay for people using them and they become almost mandatory.

u/101perry Trim Completionist 19h ago
Honestly speaking, and I think people won't like this take; I'm finding it hard to justify plug ins. Sure they'd be nice, but realistically nothing really huge. Tile markers is the only one where I can go "yeah I'll use this", and it's only for clue steps. Since some dig spots and some coordinates are in very weird spots, especially the god awful Medium clues. As for PvM, I can't say I ever need tile markers for any bossing. The absolute most I could think of is an aggression line for bosses like Raksha can I can pre-build in the room. It's not like OSRS who use tile patterns for mechanics.

Both games copy stuff from each other all the time lol, OSRS from RS3 much more than the other way around afaik. Doesn't matter either way, they're the same company, same universe, same roots, so why wouldn't they?
