Question Coming back to runescape
Hey all,
Played runescape over ten years ago. Coming back to game now starting as new player with my partner. And have some questions.
- do you have separate characters for rors or Rs3?
- which do you recommend to start playing? We currently started Rs3 but been wondering if worth jumping over to osrs?

Hiya and welcome back! You can login to both rs3 and osrs with the same account but.. your character/stats/quests etc (progression) is separate on each game
Which one you should play is hard to say, both games have their charms (to me osrs feels slower and more grindy vs rs3 which feels more laidback and casual) i’d say have a few days playing on each game and see which one you personally like the best
Happy scaping!

hey welcome back,
your runescape character is linked between both games so if you decide to become a member your membership is on both your osrs and rs3 account.
you cannot multilog however sadly in to both at the same time.
if you like a bit faster exp rate and a modernised overall game i reccomend rs3
if you dont mind a slower exp rate but prefer a bigger community i would say osrs

Is that really the case? I was under the impression that it was one membership per one game/character.

no it really is like that you have it on both games using the same character

A single character can be used on both OSRS and RS3, but they're separate games so they are progressed separately. You can only play one at a time though.
I'd recommend playing whichever seems more interesting to you, both are good games. Tbh, I'd recommend just playing a bit of each and seeing which one clicks. That's what I did when introducing my wife to the game, and she ended up preferring RS3 because of the graphics.

We're currently on the modern Runescape subreddit. I prefer this version because I can either choose an active grind or a method that's much more afk in the background for nearly every skill. I also prefer the combat here and having action bars with a ton of personalization options for settings.

So with your account you get a separate character for each under the same account/membership.
Both games have their own things that draw people in.
Osrs has the old style combat and has had lots of updates to it that don’t exist in rs3 including a sailing skill.
Rs3 has a newer ability focused playstyle and more modern graphics and its own content as well. Rs3 has gone over a huge overhaul in the past year and will definitely be changing the new player experience. (December will make it even better)
My advice is try them both out. Play each for a day or 2 then talk about what you like and don’t like and go from there on making your decision. Best part is you can always hop back and forth between them! As a veteran player, I mainly hop onto osrs with the limited time league event comes out so I can get extremely overpowered and try the different content osrs has to offer. I hope the two of you have a good experience and find yourselves on an amazing journey.

Ironman are separate characters but afaik you can play your OSRS character as your rs3 character by logging in as the same username and password
But this means you can’t login to both games at once

one name, both games, one membership. play either or both, just not at the same time. some swing between them playing one till they get bored then hop over to play the other.

You can play both with one account just not at the same time.
Both have the same gameplay loop at the heart of train skills and progress levels and gear. They are obviously built from the same theme.
However the quests, activities and stories have greatly varied over the years.
The main point of difference is the combat. OSRS combat is centred around point and click movement and at the higher levels gear and prayer swapping. RS3 has abilities you can keybind and press in the same vein as WoW, so the combat at the higher levels is more centred around executing ability rotations and/or using the right defensive abilities (and more recent bosses around movement too), although the game can do combat for you similar to OSRS.
Skills are slightly faster in RS3 (although can still take dozens to hundreds of hours to max) so in OSRS you get more “satisfaction” getting a 99. But either game it’s going to take 1000s of hours to max your levels.
OSRS has more players so you will generally see activities more populated in OSRS but RS3 has many social hubs to do group content.
RS3 has a more modern aesthetic and art style, OSRS has tried to stay true to the art style at its conception.
I would have said OSRS has runelite with many features to enhance gameplay and help but Plugins are coming to RS3 in the very near future too.
On top both have collection logs and achievements to chase. Also both have a healthy roadmap looking through 2027 with lots of good updates coming to both games.

Character profiles are separate, but you use the same login/account for both. Both games have pros/cons. Best way is to play both F2P for awhile and see which one you like more as a main.
I choose RS3 as my Mainscape because my account is from 2006 and I like watching the same game grow and change overtime.
OSRS is very nostalgic, I'll jump over for Holiday events and whenever I'm in the mood.
But I enjoy embracing the future too and the graphical updates have been phenomenal for RS3. You can switch between EoC combat and Legacy combat. Functionally the two games play pretty much the same. Fletching is a F2P skill in RS3 (up to Acadia wood now) but Mem only in OSRS. RS3 has the Mining and Smithing rework which I find to be superior, personally. The Holiday Hubs are great your first time experiencing them, but I will admit they leave much to be desired every year after; hoping for a change there. But overall, I like the aesthetics and the character customizations and cosmetics in RS3 more. Makes it easier to "FashionScape" and make my character feel like mine.
Unlike the sort of comments you find in OSRS' subreddit, I refuse to tell you to play one or the other, and specifically to play ours. I'm obviously biased. At the end of the day, whichever game speaks to you personally is what matters. Especially if you are to eventually be a paying member. Jagex getting more revenue is never a bad thing for either game as it means more content across the board and a longer lifespan.

if you want ur progress to actually matter in a growing world and growing playerbase i would recommend playing osrs over rs3. rs3 is unfortunatly a declining game

So progress in a game only matters when a game is popular and has a growing player base?? That just isn’t true.
And btw, Osrs actually had a slight decline in player base in 2026.. just a FYI.

Still had 155k+ different characters playing this month alone according to the High Scores.. You can call it slightly declining compared to OSRS, but it's far from dead and the game can always turn things around with every new content update. The Road to Restoration is not even a year in yet and there is still time.
By the way, I took the liberty of looking at your account... I found some funny stuff there. You clearly main OSRS and despite you being all for Reignited for RS3... You seemed to have voted no on OSRS's Bronzeman mode.. How very interesting! You said to someone in the OSRS subreddit "Why cant you Bronzeman enjoyers just accept some people don't want this game mode and find it stupid. Stop trying to convince people that its actually good when they don't like it. Vote yes or no and see what happens. its up to the community now", "Bloated game mode, just play main", "I'm not even a Bronzeman hater? I just find it unnecessary to add to the game so will be voting no. Just cause people vote no does not mean they HATE it" - all your quotes.
Now imagine if RS3 players went to the OSRS subreddit and pushed heavily for Bronzeman even though we don't play the game.. And you think we wouldn't notice how the first thing you do on this thread is tell him to go play OSRS because this is a declining game? It's almost like you have a personal bias against our game. Proving that the new mode shouldn't have gotten support in our game just like Bronzeman apparently shouldn't have gotten support in your game, according to you.
