I saw that one. They're really skimping on pay.

what

That pay seems very low.

Really? $100k is a huge amount of money for any job

It seems that in the USA you are expected to make 150k+ for midlevel software developer, going upto high 6 figures for very senior roles

16

u/krum Aug 28 '26

This is not true. P95 midlevel in USA is maybe $130k base and maybe up to $200k TC depending on benefits if they're lucky. You only hear about the outliers. Most devs are not working for FAANG and most probably aren't even working in high tech at all, and a huge number aren't even living in HCOL so they're not even getting that boost.

5-10% of all software engineers in the US work at a FAANG. Not even including faang advacent also high paying companies like Instacart, Pinterest, etc, and they all pay higher than that for mid level engineers

It is true that $140-160k base for midlevel is within the range of normal but p95 is higher than that, which is to say the ptile for $200k TC is lower than that. The original guy is overestimating the p50, you're underestimating the p95. The truth is the range of salaries is a lot higher than what both of you think.

FAANG are by far the largest employers of SWEs. It’s not rare at all to work at one.

And remote dev at mid level and higher often pays more than this role, and rust often more again. I'm amused at this level of consternation at a job opening I didn't even open because they pay was a non-starter.

That's crazy. The average dev salary in the uk is the equivalent of $60,000

11

u/RustOnTheEdge Aug 28 '26

Same in NL, a bit higher maybe but definitely not 100k

4

u/the-quibbler Aug 28 '26

Yeah, I always consider uk salaries crazy in the other direction. You make about twice what you'd get working at McDonald's for one of the rarest and most valuable professional capabilities. Many places in the US, $60k doesn't really get anyone over 30 to "comfortable".

And all of this while US has low grocery, gas prices, and, often, comparable rents. If US would get universal healthcare and more walkable cities it would be perfect for me💫

Americans are traditionally unwilling to pay for more government, since our national register distrustful of government oversight in general. But some states have experimented, and largely failed, with universal healthcare bids.

It's hard in a place that's basically 17 different countries wedged together and every ethnicity and nationality in the world to find a one-size-fits-all solution.

don't you guys have crazy taxes too? or is 60k after taxes?

2

u/Left-oven47 Aug 29 '26

60k USD pretax would make 47k USD after tax, paying ~13k USD in tax

1

u/Vivid-Zombie-477 Aug 29 '26

oh. i’ve read somewhere that you have around 50% taxrate and thought that even 100k salary before tax would not be comfortable to live in london

1

u/revelbytes Aug 29 '26

that almost sounds like propaganda 😭

you do have to remember in europe usually software developer salaries are a lot lower than the US so in general the taxes get lower too

If you made 100K you'd pay about 33-38% in taxes in the UK, like 45-47% in Germany, and usually around 48 to 49% in the nordic countries like Sweden and Denmark

However, since most people make like, around 50K, in the UK that would be about 20 to 22% which is I think lower than what I paid in federal and state taxes combined in the US for a lower salary, Sweden also drops to 22-25%, even the highest one, Germany, is at 36 to 38%, which is pretty high but not 50% high, and it does come with the benefit of no medical debt, or $50K+ student debt, in most of these countries

You guys get the government funded healthcare, we get the big salaries (and usually employer subsidized healthcare that ranges from okay to pretty good most of the time)

Why all the downvotes… it’s true lol

Salty European devs?

This is pretty much only true if you're located in one of the hotspots, eg. SF, NYC, where cost of living is also very high.

Yes and no, USA software jobs market is really several job markets in a trench coat.

Jobs looking to recruit talent at the national level ("big tech" vaguely) $150k is pretty low for someone with 5ish years of experience.

Jobs looking to recruit at more local levels or where software isn't the primary focus of the business, $150k is pretty good (not great but quite good) for 10 years experience.

The first market is smaller than the second but both are big enough that they forget the other market(s) exist.

1

u/riv3rtrip Aug 29 '26

This is within the range of normal software salaries outside of HCOL areas for midlevel roles.

For fully remote? I don't think so

1

u/Balcara Aug 29 '26

You wouldn't want to live in Australia then.

1

u/the-quibbler Aug 29 '26

Well. I certainly would want to live in Australia. But I'm going to do so while continuing to seek remote employment from companies paying US wages (as several of my coworkers around the world do).

u/Balcara Aug 29 '26

You, me, and the rest of the world mate.

For 140k? People will DRESS as a dog, collar and all. He will have no issues hiring lol

1

u/Hot_Paint3851 Sep 04 '26

People? WE would wear collar and puppy ears for 140k

1

u/Kpuku afraid of macros Sep 08 '26

hell I'd do it for much less if they would treat me well (and not make me write gigabytes of slop)
