Illness going around?
So I've been sick since literally the 1st of the month. I know it's the fall and with allergies it's not unusual to have a sore throat or feel tired this time of year. And normally I would ignore it, take DayQuil and try to get extra sleep at night to get better. But my lymph nodes have been swollen for two weeks, my throat has been sore for two weeks. And I feel an extreme fatigue that I can't even begin to describe right. Just a feeling like I could sleep for 4 days straight but I'm out of sick time sadly.
Does anyone know if there's something going around? I don't think it's COVID because I can still smell but idk

u/dazed_andamuzed North Side 3d ago
I could still smell when I had covid, thats not necessarily a sign.
But, swolen lymph nodes are often a sign of an infection. Allergies can turn into a sinus infection. It's probably worth a trip to urgent care or a teledoc appointment.

u/frawgster SE Side 3d ago
Facts. My wife is plagued by allergy driven sinus infections.
10
u/dazed_andamuzed North Side 3d ago edited 3d ago
Using a sinus rinse changed my freaking life. I use a NeilMed bulb with their pre-mixed packets and distilled water and I don't even remember the last time I've gotten one.
I resisted for years because the thought of it grossed me out, I'll never go back.
Replace the bottle as recommended and don't use tap water...or you'll be in for a whole new assortment of problems.

Watching the gunk come out while you gain the ability to breathe is so satisfying

u/drained_validity 3d ago
swollen lymph nodes for two weeks is past the point of hoping it resolves on its own, you need antibiotics or at least a strep test before that turns into something nastier
urgent care isn't that expensive with most insurance and they can swab you for all the usual suspects in like ten minutes

u/HikeTheSky Hill Country 3d ago
How do you know it's a bot?
2
u/LePfeiff 3d ago edited 3d ago
Less than a month old account, comment has that LLM generated tone and pacing, and they comment on totally random subreddits + never reply. These new bot accounts have been swarming recently to build up comment karma off subreddits with no karma restrictions
Oh and they reply underneath a top level comment but their text is in direct reply to the OP, ignoring the context of the comment they are replying under1
u/HikeTheSky Hill Country 3d ago
We probably have to add a reporting for bots besides all the bot protection we already have. And it banned dozens of accounts from the last post that went on th frontpage of reddit.

There’s massive amounts of covid going around. But also, other viruses and people are going to work while sick so this shit just perpetuates ad infinitum.
6
u/UCantSeeMe2025 3d ago
Yup... Covid is hitting our area hard. I was diagnosed 4 weeks ago and don't test positive anymore but I've still got really bad chest congestion. Had to have my doctor call in an inhaler prescription for me yesterday. 🤒
2
u/FreeKatKL 3d ago
It gave me asthma that I’m now stuck with. Good luck and don’t be afraid to ask for a course of prednisone.

u/suspicious_atbest 3d ago edited 3d ago
I know that you mentioned that you do not think it’s Covid because you can still smell, however, based on this week’s numbers we are very high and in the red. For awareness, the newer strands of Covid symptoms don’t always include the loss of smell. It’s mostly respiratory and extreme fatigue. I hope you feel better soon!
2
u/Pretty-Foundation481 3d ago
Ah well that's good to know for the future. I should get some tests to take at home if it happens again. I went to an urgent care and they didn't bother testing me for anything. She seemed pretty certain it was either strep throat or a sinus infection so she gave me amoxicillin.
5
u/suspicious_atbest 3d ago
Amoxicillin will definitely have you feeling better in about 2-3 days as long as it’s strep and possibly a sinus infection. If you have a sore throat (I can’t remember off the top of my head) but gargling warm salt water can help kill the bacteria too and help you feel better.
1
u/AccomplishedBuddy394 2d ago
The at home rapid Covid tests are estimated have have about 30% accuracy for current strains. I would suggest getting a PCR test at a doctor's office.
13
u/morejosh 3d ago
Your typical viral respiratory infection should be well on its way out 2 weeks after first symptoms. Your initial throat pain and node swelling tend be most intense 48/72 hours after first symptoms and then taper off slowly. By this point you should be left with congestion and mild cough. If I were you I would see a doctor as it sounds like you could have a bacterial infection, possibly secondary to a primary viral infection.

COVID is going around like crazy right now. I doubt it is just allergies.

u/Overall-Soil3163 3d ago
a week ago i got sick like this too i also had a fever , coughing was horrible , also made me start wheezing bad to where i was choking while coughing 😂 ( i have asthma but it’s been under control for years ) i went to the ER they tested for covid and flu both were negative they didn’t give me shit, went to urgent care the next day cause my breathing worsened they tested again as well for strept came out negative. I ended up getting syrup and steroids prescribed it helped but now i still have the cough

u/SnooSketches4722 3d ago
Getting over covid. 4 weeks.
It's been strong in the area for a couple of months.
6
u/Lizunyan 3d ago
It could still be Covid, you don't always lose your smell. It's too late for this, but if you get sick and test positive for Covid within the first five days you can get paxlovid which helps a LOT and helps you recover much faster. Anyone reading this if it's been less than five days, it's worth it to get a little swab test from Walgreens or Walmart and make sure
3
u/Pretty-Foundation481 3d ago
That's good to know! I didn't even realize they had meds for COVID now.
10
u/Maleficent-Pear-4542 3d ago
I have it. I got it from my husband. It wasn’t the flu strep Covid or RSV. Just a virus gotta ride it out.
-5
u/Pretty-Foundation481 3d ago
Just a virus?? But which one if it's not any of those?? 🤦♀️

3
u/Maleficent-Pear-4542 3d ago
That’s what I’d like to know. I’m wondering if it’s a new strain of covid. I’ve had a sore throat, runny nose 1/2 a headache and the fatigue is off the chart
4
u/ninde_inglorion 3d ago
It's the new strain of covid started in Pennsylvania couple months ago those are all the symptoms
4
u/Ancient_Sea5097 2d ago
Yes something wild going around. I was sick for something like 14 days. Started at the throat and finished with respiratory type symptoms. Tested negative for everything. Glad it’s over and I’m terrified of getting it again.

I’m in Boerne, but we have been having tons of ear infections in kids and surprise it’s COVID. So just get tested to be safe! Lots of viruses though since school started up.
4
u/vhsenthusiast 3d ago
It's likely flu or COVID. COVID levels are especially high in Texas right now and flu started spreading early. COVID doesn't always impact smell. The only way to know for sure is to take a test.
4
u/pink_ee_kitty 2d ago
Sorry you're not feeling well. Something must have been going around since last month. I started getting sick Sept. 8th, tested neg for flu a & b, COVID and rsv 2 times. Had fever, body aches, my teeth hurt too! Most symptoms cleared up except I'm still coughing up a LOT of mucus and having coughing fits that make me feel like I'm drowning. Finally going to see the allergist next week.

Yes, ripped through my home. Get your flu shot if that’s your thing. I was the only one left standing. Wife and I went to the Iron Maiden concert, she fell ill a week or so later testing positive for flu-a. Then daughter. I got my flu shot and they hadn’t gotten theirs yet.
1
u/Pretty-Foundation481 3d ago
I actually got my COVID flu and pneumonia vaccines altogether at the start of September. That's why I'm so weirded out by how bad I feel. I wouldn't think I'd get anything if I got the shot.
4
u/crosscountry58S 3d ago
No guarantees, unfortunately. Should at least reduce your symptoms/duration, but I suppose that’s little consolation right now. You probably had one is those and it morphed into something else. Or if it was indeed strep, you just had bad luck with exposure. I caught strep a few years ago as an adult and was laid out for a few days. Not fun.

Something definitely going around, my spouse and I are just recovering from it. I took a home test for COVID, Flu A & B and all were negative so I’m not sure what it was. Could’ve been RSV I suppose

u/Certain-Passion454 3d ago
girl i have THE EXACT same symptoms since the first as well. Don't let anyone tell you its a cold and get checked. If dayquill or nyquill stops working on you, go to doctor asap. I wnt to urgent care yesterday because my throat was closing, couldn't eat couldn't speak, hurt like i was being choked. NOBODY gonna tell me that's just a sore throat. Go get checked queen, exaggerate your symptoms if that's what it'll take to be taken seriously but 2 weeks IS NOT OK. Advocate for your self !!!

u/SmallzisSmallz 2d ago
Me and my family had it. We all needed antibiotics. Tested negative for flu Covid and strep. We sent a culture out I’ll update when I get results
•
u/Pretty-Foundation481 14h ago
Glad you got the antibiotics! Hope you're feeling better now? I know I am! Almost back to normal! So it must have been bacterial.

u/Pretty-Foundation481 3d ago
So I went to the urgent care near me and they said with my symptoms I either have a sinus infection or I have strep throat. But she didn't wanna run the test because she said it'll probably come back negative since their test only checks for strep a but I could have strep b or g or the five other streps there are. She gave me amoxicillin and said it'll treat both strep and a sinus infection depending which one I have so it doesn't really matter. And she told me I should feel completely better by Saturday but still take the whole dose of meds. And if I don't feel better Saturday just com back. So glad to have some answers about it 🤔
5
3
u/crosscountry58S 3d ago
Why didn’t you take a home Covid/flu test initially? You could have gotten on paxlovid or Tamiflu. Also odd to me that the urgent care cant sufficiently test for strep.
•
u/Pretty-Foundation481 15h ago
I don't have any tests. Mine all expired back in 2021 I think. Honestly I've been getting my COVID shot regularly so it didn't even occur to me that it may be COVID. I literally just got my updated shot last month. But yeah like I said earlier I went to urgent care and they didn't even mention COVID or test me for it so...

This such terrible, nonsensical, lazy medical advice. It hurts my heart.
•
u/Pretty-Foundation481 15h ago
Why? What do you mean?
•
u/Pure-Tension6473 12h ago
There absolutely is a test for strep. Strep B is in the genital and intestinal tract and in a non neonate/non immunocompromised person isn’t going to the cause of a sore throat. There are things like centor criteria that tell us as physicians the likelihood of strep and clinical symptoms of sinus infections (sinus pressure, purulence, fever, clinical resickening, etc) you may have needed the antibiotics but what she said tells me she was shotgunning it. She also should’ve tested for flu Covid and didn’t. My guess is that it was a NP that you saw but at any rate, the visit was terribly medically unsound. I hope you feel better 💜

I’m about 150 miles southeast of San Antonio, near Corpus Christi… about 4-5 weeks ago my people had something flu like… my older son fell ill on a Monday… my sister said she had the flu that Wednesday… I fell ill the next night Thursday (we haven’t been around her in over a month btw) The next week my younger son got it… I had minor congestion and sore throat with a demon of a headache the first day… the headache persisted… I was EXTREMELY lethargic! I slept a lot but didn’t feel well rested… sweating then chills… I took 2 ibuprofen and 2 acetaminophen every… who knows really… ~ 36 hours in, I was so hungry! I ate… didn’t stay down… then diarrhea… 🤢 I was miserable… no energy and there was no getting comfortable… the headache was intense… Anyway… it could’ve come from my nephew that visited the weekend before my oldest fell ill… he’s living in New Braunfels, but neither he or anyone living with him have been sick…. So… hope everyone here is on the mend and feeling better very soon!!!💙

I have been aick since the start of September. It was Covid -> long covid -> asthma and now it seems like it's allergies and asthma again. Respiratory illnesses trigger my asthma. It's really bad.

u/coralynncoraa 3d ago
It’s Covid. We saw my child’s pediatrician at the beginning of September and she was wearing a mask when she came in. Said Covid has been rampant because this strain’s symptoms are much more mild than what we all experienced back in 2020. She said people were testing positive without fevers, without loss of taste or smell. The biggest indicator that it’s likely Covid is the fact that it has lasted as long as it has. My child had been sick for over a week and it lasted for another week after we saw the pediatrician. You’re right around the two week mark as well. It’s Covid.

I have had over 5 family members have the same thing. Some have lead to respiratory infections. No covid.

I work in pharmacy- Covid is unfortunately going around 😬 You don't need to lose your sense of smell to have Covid, you could even have Covid and show no symptoms. You should probably at least buy a covid/flu combo test to rule that out :)

I had something few weeks ago, was so odd. Short few hours of fever/chills/body aches and that went away. Felt better besides lack of sleep. These sinuses flailed up, had some throat/cough issues and just tired. Tests were negative but may have been past time. All in all took close to 2 weeks to be normal.

Sounds like you had similar to what I had, go to a doctor to get prescribed allergy meds. I tried to tough it out like you with just some over the counter stuff but I ended up just prolonging it. Took the meds and I was good after 2 days.

Okay, so it's not just me. I'm on the tail end of mine, I came down with a cough and such (some stuffiness + feverish here and there) but also mainly the cough starting right at the first of the month (so this is my third week), either as some kind of upper respiratory thing or bronchitis and/or some kind of infection... And it seems like everyone else I've spoken to ALSO is or has gotten sick in these last few weeks.

Top 3 in-home remedies:
- Orange juice- the good kind, high in vitamin C and they have packets of vitamin C, add it to OJ. Drink as much as you can in 24 hours.
- Water - ass loads of it, so much you think you might drown. This
flushes
- the body faster than anything else, flushes out whatever bug you have.
- Honey and garlic - crush up a clove of garlic, soak in honey overnight, works great for combating flu and cold symptoms.
THE #1 THING TO REMEMBER!
The GI system is the hardest working system in the body and processing food, breaking it down, it requires several organs to process food. Don’t eat. Drink broth. Let your GI system rest and your body will heal much faster.
Good luck.

Here’s a crazy thought. Why not get tested and stop putting others at risk?
My guess is your not wearing a face mask around exposing others and chalking it to allergies

I work from home so exposing others isn't really a big risk in my case. But anyway I've been to an urgent care now and they didn't even bother testing me for COVID so pretty sure I'm good.

Covid has a patent number….no one gets a regular cold or flu anymore. Someone’s always claiming covid. Get over yourselves that was years ago. Look up “SARS-CoV Patent” its made by various scientists from china, france, the US and many more. Anyways…you’re probably feeling the effects of all the preservatives in most foods. If you drink starbucks, dutch bros, energy drinks or eat fast food, or regularly eat processed foods you will always feel fatigued and i’ll. Anything that comes in a cardboard box in the freezer is typically processed. i dont stress enough that most of the food on US shelves are literally killing people slowly, but hey I ain’t a doctor or a nutritionist so my word means diddly squat! Hope you feel better!!!

Sounds like you got wrecked from your vaccines. If you work from home not sure where you could’ve caught such an evil bug. Those vaccines can wreck your immune system. They don’t work in a positive way for everyone. Not all immune systems are alike.
2
u/crosscountry58S 3d ago
Highly doubtful. OP got sick a month after getting vaxxed. Sure, vaccines can make you feel not great for a few days, but let’s not start this kind of paranoia.
0
u/Chimmiii 3d ago
There’s a small percentage of people that succumb easily to other respiratory viruses in the weeks following vaccination. It’s a documented fact not paranoia. This Includes me. I fit that small percentage. I would always get sick with some respiratory bug a month or two after vaccination. Your immune system is working hard at protecting your from the antigens that its meant to protect your from that you end up getting sick easily with something else. After I realized this, I did a trial test run on my body with no vaccines, I haven’t been sick in years. It’s just about getting to know your body. Just like medication. Not everyone responds to medication in the same way everyone else does. Don’t believe me go do the research.

I am not hsppy that you feel bad but I am so relieved to see your post. I have had a sore throat, earache and headache for almost a week, but the worst part is thr fatigue from doing absolutely nothing. I went to bed at 7:30 last night and slept until 11:30 this morning. I get sinus infections from allergies at least once a year but this feels different.
