If you hit a sudden significant traffic slowdown some people will put on the hazards for a few seconds just to give the traffic behind them a heads up. It’s not really supposed to be something you leave on or routinely use once you’re already in traffic, though.
I’ve also seen people use them as a quick thank you for letting them in as well.

Ive been aware of it maybe 10 years? Hard braking unexpectedly? Give the guy behind you a heads up so you dont get rear ended. Pretty straightforward... People are so damn distracted behind the wheel these days and so willing to kill other people. I dont object to a little bit of extra safety/cation.

Maybe because I grew up rural, I’m cool with flashers being used while driving more slowly than would be expected for the road you’re on.
I would expect this to look like “I am having engine trouble and looking for a safe place to pull over” or “I do not want this mattress I am hanging onto by a pinky to fly off” or “I am a tractor, actually.”
Like if that guy last year who stopped on 35S to pick up a dead dog off the road and proceeded to drive 45mph onto 10W with an unsecured dead dog on top of his jeep had put his blinkers on to let people know he was stopping (to pick up a dead dog) and driving slow (to avoid dislodging the dead dog), I would have appreciated it.

Some cars automatically turn on flashers during hard braking.

That's for emergency braking and not normal braking.

Considering how little attention many pay to driving, I wouldn't be surprised that they activate the emergency braking more often than they should.

I want to say some cars do it during a hard brake even without the cars emergency braking activation. But I could completely be wrong.
Either way, I think it's more likely the car activating those lights on its own, than the concept of someone turning that on/off themselves as they drive.

Dunno, but I've noticed more people are using their flashers for bullshit reasons.

That person probably got rear ended and now has ptsd from it

Me, im that person. The dude who hit me was 35, and had a passport from when he was 16 in Guatemala. His truck hadent been registered since 1998. No insurance. Literally everything about this dide was illegal. Crumpled up the rear of my car like a beer can and pushed my infant sons car seat in between the front driver and passenger seats. And now I have to pay extra on my car insurance the next few years because of that illegal SOB.

I do this if I’m at last in line of a sudden stop, especially a highway where you’re doing 70+ then coming to a complete stop.
I’ll put then on until someone is behind me, then it’s on them if they want to do the same. I wouldn’t do it if I was already in stop and go traffic though

This is why I do it. Driving around you see nothing but missing back bumpers and I don't want to end up being the next messed up car on the road.

Got behind one this am. Is he turning left, right, going forward, backwards. Wtf is he going to do. It's just a really stupid thing to do.

Hitting the flashers for a few seconds when encountering sudden, rapid slowdowns doesn't bother me. Driving with flashers because you have something in the bed of your truck, or because you're towing a trailer is asinine though. Just secure your loads and drive normal.

Especially considering some cars blinkers don't function normally through hazard lights. I was in a really long funeral procession that had to navigate through downtown on the highway, so many of the cars didn't have functioning blinkers with their hazards on that it felt dangerous as we had to move completely across the highway to exit.

I don’t mind flashers being used if it’s foggy or in any really bad weather event.

If I hit sudden stopped traffic I'll hit my flashers for a second if an 18 wheeler is behind me and can't see it, so pretty rarely. I learned it from 18 wheelers doing it to warn the people behind them 20 years or so ago and I see it when I'm traveling still

Who calls them flashers? Are you talking about your turn signals/hazard lights?

Well it’s illegal so maybe they’ll do it in front of a cop and learn a lesson
