Scamp Family
All right family, I know we so dearly missed each other this summer. Let’s hear your playback of some awesome replacement festivals that you found so we can run it back together next year.
Also, is Goldberg in prison yet?

Secret Dreams has been fantastic the last two years especially this past September at the new location in Marengo, OH. Although the neighbors were none too pleased when they realized what they actually had in store for them so we’ll see what happens with noise ordinances and limits next year.

Went to Nocturnal Valley two weeks ago south of St Louis, first year fest but it gave me major Scamp vibes.

Agreed, need some more jam / non bass in there and it'd be perfect
the production was also insane at nocturnal. for a first year fest, they hit pretty much every note.Only gripes I had was small things. They also def oversold as well. Other than that, its up there for one of my top festival experiences

Totally, they did SUCH a good job with the music, I loved the featured art and the puppets too. They really recruited solid talent.
I had some more major gripes with the way VIP was handled, and the sheer amount of people taking up tons of space at the stages (way more than I’ve ever seen anywhere else) but I still had such a great time overall and I definitely hope they succeed.

u/funkyyyyyyyyyyyyy 9d ago
I heard bad things about VIP…. I feel you on the space of at stages, especially the two smaller ones. They need more conflicts (unfortunately) to keep people moving in the venue

u/novanugs 9d ago edited 9d ago
Yes definitely they really cannot keep Astral stage unused until Friday. If they had split the bigger artists between Astral and Nocturnal on Thursday that whole day would have gone way smoother. We ended up giving up at a certain point and just enjoying ourselves at the renegade by our campsite instead (and they absolutely crushed it all weekend)
And yeah they kind of screwed us over with VIP and are not fully owning up to it, which is a bummer. But, I still think they put together a great product for GA and I would probably go back as a GA attendee next time.
2
u/funkyyyyyyyyyyyyy 9d ago
agreed. they were basically asking everyone to park at nocturnal stage on thursday. also having no conflict at main stage during the headliners made it super easy for everyone to flock to forest right after, considering the long walk to camp for most people. going to acid katz/flintwick was near impossible. wish i woulda caught a renegade!
and sorry to hear that...def save a couple bucks, ga was plentyyyy for me

u/novanugs 8d ago
Did you snag tickets for next year during their presale?

u/funkyyyyyyyyyyyyy 8d ago
noooo ;/ hitting red rocks for mickman so gotta wait. you?

u/novanugs 8d ago
NICE Mickman at red rocks sounds like an amazing time
We are waiting for the lineup this time, and to see how the fallout for VIP pans out. But very tempting to go back!

u/wookape 9d ago
Can you tell us more about it?
3
u/novanugs 9d ago
Absolutely, I think the things that made it feel so much like Summer Camp were that once you’re in, you’re in (no wristband checks anywhere other than the standard Guest/Artist/VIP checks near the main backstage area) so you can bring whatever you like with you and just have a good time - wagons, chairs, drinks, food etc.
The lineup had more hard electronic than Scamp typically does I think but honestly you really couldn’t tell that much of a shift in type of attendees (from my perspective), it was just a little more high energy rather than long stretches of relaxation and music went way later into the night.
There seemed to be a higher focus on highlighting nature rather than production level across the grounds (for example there were creeks and caves to explore and you could rock climb, even if you were a beginner since they had a climbing group there assisting). And there was virtually no cell service for most people so many had to really disconnect from the outside world, which I personally loved.
It definitely did not feel corporate or “trust fund” in the least bit. That Astral Valley Art Park felt really community oriented, it seemed like quite a few attendees had been to much smaller events there and knew the place well. That vibe might change as the festival continues because this year they had a lot of logistical problems and they have some significant pathfinding and crowd control issues to solve BUT it sounds like they’re working on those things, so I think it’s one that’s worth checking out, especially if you want to get away from the outside world for a while.

you should learn who clayton is, but sure....act like you understand
Some of us remember his "proud zionists" post of him on his cousin (nettles) in Israel too; but again, you clearly must have a better understanding of who these people are....

Smaller fest, but the Pines in the Park music fest last year and this year blew my fucking mind. SCI, Eggy, Dogs in a Pile, Lettuce, Leftover Salmon, and some DJs and activities filling the whole days up this year. Worth the price of admission and then some. The music was unreal and the community is so full of love and joy. And it's in that same Midwest bubble, it's about the same drive for me to get there as it was to SCamp. I'll be hitting it up every year

u/twincities612 9d ago
Both Blue Ox and Campout in the Pines are awesome; Pines Music Park is a great venue. Also, check out the festivals at Driftless Music Garden— Bonfire, People’s Fest, and Boogiedown. I actually met the owner at Cheese which is how I ended up there. Absolutely amazing, locally owned festivals that are on an incredible farm and really well run.

I heard Goldberg left the states. Word from some people who are integrated with shoe fest Illinois. But idk how reliable that information is.

u/ltrain_00 10d ago
He's been spending most of his time in Mexico for years now.
3
u/Accurate-Sleep-1906 9d ago
That’s not entirely accurate. Since the SummerCamp failure he has fully retreated to Mexico. Prior to that he wasn’t in Mexico that much until the last year or so.
2
u/ltrain_00 9d ago
He started a brewery down there like 3 or more years ago and was living down there full time when that was happening and he was having concerts and stuff down there he was promoting as well.
3
u/Accurate-Sleep-1906 9d ago
Again that is not entirely accurate. I’ll give you the backstory as I know it. I’m not saying this is 100% factual but I have had a front row seat to the gossip.
He purchased Mundo Maya Brewery in Playa Del Carmen during Covid. At that time Mundo Maya was operational for 10+ years. A Canadian guy started it and he made solid beer. At the time of purchase Ian spent zero time in Mexico and had no operational involvement with the brewery. He had a partner that was the one running the operations. His partner bailed on the project about a year into it due to difference of ideologies of a brewery. The partner wanted to make and sell beer, Ian was focused on seltzer. Beer was an afterthought for Ian and it started to show. His first partner did actually have an extensive background in selling and making beer which is ultimately why they bought the brewery in the first place - and why he finally bailed. After he left the brewery has been all downhill run by people with no clue. So Ian brought in a new partner with corporate experience but no beverage experience. The new partner bailed on Ian about 6 months later and also the head brewer left. I use the term head brewer loosely as they were technically the hired helper for packaging then was promoted to brewer when they had no other option. Ian then placed his nephew in charge of operations (working illegally from Argentina with absolutely zero experience in the industry). That lasted less than a year when the nephew bailed on him and ran back to Argentina. That’s when Ian started asking Founders Brewery for assistance and then finally Toppling Goliath. Both were previous sponsors at Scamp which is how that connection formed. You may have noticed a collaboration of TG and MM at one of the SummerCamps. Anyway, those breweries also backed out of further assistance and that’s when Ian made the move to Mexico. At that time Mundo Maya was a flailing brand and making shit beer - but still making beer. It’s been about two years now since Ian has focused on the brewery and it’s only gotten worse (sound familiar?). He did bring in a new Mexican partner to assist him. He had worked previously at a brewery which failed. But now that partner bailed on Ian due to difference of opinions about two weeks ago. When Ian started to focus on the brewery he was flying back n forth extensively and slowly that adjusted to most his time in Tulum. Post SummerCamp collapse he has now been in Tulum full time. The brewery is on its last leg at this point as restaurants and bars that were selling the product are currently unable to purchase the beer. Although it’s still technically “operational” it presumably will be completely shut down in the very near future. Ian has no cash and is hanging on by a thread. Despite what gets posted here, he is not doing well and is quite desperate. He does have a restaurant / bar and a beach club in Tulum, both of which sold the beer of course. Tulum as a city is in a world of hurt. It survives on tourism and right now it’s basically a ghost town. Most businesses in that town are hanging on by a thread. So many have closed already. I can’t imagine Ian’s places are any different.

u/Accurate-Sleep-1906 9d ago
Oh and regarding the concerts… yeah not really. He was trying to use existing music events as an opportunity to promote his beer. He probably did a few of his own but they were extremely small and most certainly all lost money. Mostly he just did events on the Tulum beaches he was able to weasel his way on to sponsor card by giving away free beer. It didn’t work. In his brilliant business mind ALL the music events he sponsored were Argentinian musicians. (His now deceased wife was Argentinian.) literally not one single Mexican band or musician was sponsored. The irony here is Argentinians are HATED in Playa and Tulum because they go there and work illegally. Mexicans are to Argentinians as MAGA is to Mexicans. So Ian quickly alienated all the local Mexican beer drinkers. It made no sense at all because the ilegal Argentinians are extremely poor and have no money for craft beer so he was promoting to people that couldn’t afford his product while pushing away what should have been his actual client base. It was comically poor business management. But what’s new with Ian?

u/davidmj59 10d ago
If I’m not mistaken, which I could be. I heard the other brand is his brother jay, who split from Ian to continue to keep setting up shows. Ian is the shady one from what I remember. My memory is dog shit though

Ian is living in Tulum Mexico. He has a failing microbrewery in Playa Del Carmen and failing (failed?) beach club in Tulum.

So they actually rebranded and still throw shows on the peoria river front as "gold ent"
I wish people understood that this didn't stop them; they had the liquidity to rebrand and continue operations as they were essentially. I kind of lost all that was left of any respect to sean kenny when I saw how much he has continued to do business that (from a distance) looks like he still fw them as well.
This is why there were so many preaching the importance of single-room headliner events needing support; these festivals are not ran by the most passionate people and boy does it show with every single goldberg event I attended (and even played). Once you see it from the inside, it really changes the perspective I believe the public has still.
If someone ripped me off hundreds of dollars for an event that kind of proved itself to not be happening, yet was still selling tickets for it: I would be doing a bit of due diligence to make sure I wasn't supporting a rebranded entity of the same person that ripped me off previously...
4
u/wabashcr 10d ago
They didn't rebrand. Jay Goldberg is the one currently promoting shows at Kenny's and FVT. Ian has nothing to do with it.
7
u/dogglife6 10d ago
Homie Jay Goldberg had nothing to do with what happened last year. Jay is 💯 guilty of raising a self entitled self centered narcissist piece of shit but he didn’t pull this bullshit it was his son Ian and Ian’s company. Jay has his own business and has been a successful promoter in Peoria since way back when. Matter of fact this would have happened years ago but Jay kept stepping in and saving Ian’s ass. Word in the know Was Ian was hoping his dad would step in and save his pathetic ass once again but Jay finally said no more son

u/ltrain_00 10d ago
I'm pretty sure Sean has been booking all of the shows at his places himself. I know when he first moved down town the goldberg's were booking but I don't believe that's happened for several years at least now.

This is the answer. Scamp was the only fest I’ve ever been to that gave me the same Midwest vibes the ledges provides. Happy trails fellow quarry rat, and a 4am big boom for you!

Nocturnal Valley this year was exceptional. I wouldn’t pay for any upgrades if given another chance but the festival itself was amazing.

Any word on a lawsuit over unpaid ticket refunds yet? I bought early bird and was not able to charge back. Would be amazing to get my money back.
1
u/Entire-Ground-8373 7d ago
Same here, bought two early bird tickets and my bank has refused the refund twice now because it had been too long. If I stole that much bread from people I’d be in prison. Why isn’t that POS? How do we make something happen? It infuriates me this mf is just walking around like he did nothing wrong?!!

u/PopDowntown2662 5d ago
Same, the bank refunded me half the ticket price but I got screwed out of the 2nd half. Bought early bird super deluxe vip.

Man, when I first saw this post, I thought it was the summer camp organization trying to talk some bullshit about they know they fucked up and we’re gonna try to do something to make it better. I was gonna go grab my popcorn and get ready for a good ride. 🤣

Shangri-La was pretty cool, had a decent variety of music. It was my first time, and I had a broken foot in a boot, so I didn't get the full experience. Definitely plan to go back next year....

u/funkyyyyyyyyyyyyy 9d ago
I realllllly wish some fest would jump on three sisters. Such a good spot for something magical. Hoping something cool wants to find a new venue and they end up there.
I would say Secret Dreams is pretty comparable. More focus on heavier electronic music, but a good mix of jam in there. They had Andy Frasco last year, which to me, is a scamp staple.
Not sure about the new location (ive heard good things, went in 25) but production and vibes are immaculate. Sucks that im gonna have to pick either nocturnal or secret every year cause they BANGIN
