***New Here? READ before posting***

Before you go posting and asking if you should get checked for scoliosis: yes. If you think you have scoliosis because you have uneven ribs or hips or legs, get checked by an orthopedic surgeon as soon as possible.

We have a huge problem of people posting images of their bodies here asking for a diagnosis. First off: we can’t diagnose. We aren’t medical professionals here. Secondly, you might not have scoliosis. It’s very hard for those of us with scoliosis to see a near perfect body complaining about their body in a community that’s supposed to be a safe place to vent.

We are not saying you aren’t welcome here; what we’re saying is be mindful. What isn’t often talked about is the mental battle of having an asymmetrical body. Because when your body is asymmetrical, it doesn’t even look like your friends who also have asymmetrical bodies, because each curve is different and each body is different.

So before posting, read our sub rules. Get checked by an orthopedic surgeon. Then if you do have scoliosis, come back and post about it. Your feelings, your thoughts, whatever questions you may have - except don’t ask if you have scoliosis (it’s seriously the only question we cannot answer).

Discussion is it okay that i prefer bags on my left shoulder while having levoscoliosis?

my thought is to wear bags i’m comfortable with. at the beginning, i thought i should wear bags on my right shoulder since it sticks up due to my levoscoliosis but it’s very uncomfortable. it makes my left side curve more especially when the bag gets heavy.

with backpacks, i just never felt comfortable with them. my back arches a bit inward, similar to my sisters. i’m not diagnosed with lordosis at all and both my sisters don’t have any spinal issues so i think it just runs in the family. anyway, i feel like this is a factor to my discomfort as well.

with bags on my left, i feel least uncomfortable. even when the bag gets heavy, i feel like it somehow shifts the curve to the right as opposed to what it does when the bag’s on my right.

throughout college, i wore bags like this, but now i’m asking if backpacks are actually better now that i’m going to work at a corporation in the future?

thank you for reading!!

Questions about the Operations/Surgeries People who had spinal fusion, did it help with pain?

Diagnosed with 40 degree scoliosis at age 12. Had to wear a brace for a couple years. Never had pain until my mid 20s. Im now 34 and have chronic nerve pain and it limits physical activity and job opportunities a lot. Anytime I try to be more physically active i get severe pain the next day, to the point I can barely move and have to lay flat a lot until it heals.

I’ve heard a lot of mixed reports whether or not surgery helped with pain. Im concerned as it’s gotten a lot worse with age. Some people have worse pain from surgery, im now at 44 degrees but usually people don’t get surgery until the 50 mark so it’s never been suggested.

People who got surgery, did it help? Are you glad that you did? Would you suggest others to get it in my scenario? If I’m sedentary I don’t get pain but that’s not an ideal way to live.

The last couple of months have been tough, being unable to train properly and ultimately having to pull out of @prosportgrappling Tanto 4. 💔
But we’re back! 💪🔥
It feels so good to be back rolling on the mats and putting in the hard work in the gym again. Taking it day by day, rebuilding, and getting stronger both physically and mentally.
Here’s a little clip from my latest S&C session. The setbacks are part of the journey — time to get back to work! 🥋💥
The comeback starts now. 👊❤️

Question about Physical Therapy NHS Scoliosis Diagnosis

This is a question for people who have been diagnosed with scoliosis as an adult in the UK under the NHS.

I am finally being seen next week after an MSK physiotherapy referral was made almost 6 months ago. My question is, will I only be able to receive physiotherapy, or will they be able to investigate for scoliosis?

Discussion What has actually helped you with scoliosis without surgery?

Hi everyone, I'm 21 and I have S-shaped scoliosis. My CT report from 2024 says grade 2, but it doesn't mention my exact Cobb angle.

I'm wondering what has actually helped people improve their posture, reduce pain or move more comfortably without surgery.

Have physiotherapy, scoliosis-specific exercises, swimming or strength training helped you? Were there any exercises that made things worse?

I'd also like to stay active and hopefully do MMA one day, so I'm trying to understand what I can work on safely before making any big decisions about treatment.

I'd really appreciate hearing about your own experiences. Thanks!

Questions about the Operations/Surgeries Selective thoracic fusion + thoracoplasty

Guys what on gods earth is a thoracoplasty...

Um im shocked. So i saw my surgeon and he said we'd be doing a selective thoracic fusion (around t5 to t12) and then out of no where he mentioned we'd also do thoracoplasty.

He said i can opt of of the thoracoplasty on the day of the surgery. But he is saying its to help with my big hump and to help derotate my spine.

I dont really give a shit about cosmetic outcomes of having a smaller hump. I dont know if i should opt in or opt out. Does anyone have any thoughts? Pros cons? Did it cause ur more pain or residual pain? My worry is chasing cosmetic goal can leave u stuck with more pain... srsly this thoracoplasty came out of nowhere. Please share ur thoughts. Im 26 and have a thoracic curve of 50+ and lumbar in the 30s.

Discussion It’s crazy the difference scoliosis can make on your body shape

I can only speak for myself but prior to surgery I had very severe scoliosis (100°thoracic and 80°lumbar). And being only 4’10” at the time and 120 lbs, it made a huge impact on my body and made me appear chubbier than I should have been before.

But after surgery, I now have a spine of less than 10° and grew about 3 inches and woah I have a waist. And I can fit into cute tops I had before that made look and feel big but now fit me so well. Of course my body isnt perfect now— my ribs still stick out and ive got loose skin from my thoracic curve but overall? It’s better than I could have ever imagined. But now I have a cute waist and I feel more confident in my body now

Questions about the Operations/Surgeries After surgery, when I think something is going to hit my back I feel it even though it doesn’t hit me

I probably sound crazy but does anybody else post surgery experience this? I’m almost a year post-op and doing generally very well, but I’ve had something weird happen to me a few times now. if there is a swinging door, someone pretending they’re going to hit me, etc., but then it does NOT actually hit me, I still actually literally feel it. like my mind is doing something crazy. the first time I experienced this was when my friend pretended to hit me with a ladle, and I felt it like the exact sensation of being hit hard with the ladle and I screamed and got like really hot and I was like “WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU WHY WOULD YOU HIT ME???? YOU KNOW I JUST HAD SURGERY” and everyone else was like he did not even come close to actually hitting you 😳 and if I didn’t 100% trust my friends and family, I would have thought they were all lying for him because of the way that felt. and since then I’ve had other things come at my back without ever actually coming into contact but I feel it happen

Question about Pain Management Abdominal pain and discomfort 6 months after spinal fusion?

Post image
2 Upvotes

My son is almost 6 months post-op from posterior spinal fusion for scoliosis. He has cerebral palsy, is nonverbal, and has several other medical complexities, so identifying exactly what he's experiencing can be challenging.

Since his surgery, I've noticed him frequently grimacing and reaching toward or grabbing at his abdominal area. Because he cannot verbally describe what he's feeling, it's difficult to determine whether he's experiencing pain, pressure, muscle tightness, or something else entirely.

We've been looking into possible gastrointestinal causes, but I'm also wondering whether some of his discomfort could be related to the spinal fusion itself, especially with the changes in his posture and alignment.

For those who have undergone spinal fusion:

- Did you experience abdominal pain, tightness, pulling, or pressure several months after surgery?

- Did the changes in your spinal alignment affect how your ribs, abdominal muscles, or internal organs felt?

- At around the six-month mark, were you still experiencing pain or unusual sensations that weren't necessarily located in your back?

I'm particularly interested in hearing about sensations that might be difficult for someone who cannot communicate verbally to express.

I'm not looking for a diagnosis, just hoping to better understand what he might be experiencing through the perspectives of people who've been through this themselves.

Thank you for any insight you're willing to share.

Question about Pain Management Corsets as Back Support

I've got a curve in my upper back, about 40° to the right (no xray, just an estimate from my doctor) and I've been getting worse pain than ever recently. I've never been braced but I owned a corset for a short while and it felt amazing - I could sit upright and stand still for WAY longer than usual. I've been wondering if anybody on here has any recommendations for support corsets or anything similar.

I'm pretty sure, from what I know, that it's not wise to use it all the time due to muscle weakening, and of course I will take days off and stick to my physio routine. But right now I'm looking for short-term relief as I spend a lot of time sat up and stood up (uni student) and I'm relying on painkillers.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Discussion my story of scoliosis and your advice please

Post image
35 Upvotes

I am now 49, female, in hong kong. i was first diagnosis scoliosis when i was in teenage 14-15. The angle was approx 17 something. my doctor did not give me any treatment, no brace, just asked me to do some home exercise, very general one like situp, legswing. i was also told that after grown up there will be little risk of progression. then I completed ignored the scoliosis in my lifetime. i often carry very heavy massager bag, i often buy grocery with 16cans of cola, carrying back home. there are often some pains at the back, yet i thought it is common among people in city.

since a few years ago around menopause, i felt like my spine is 'bent', and i often can't lift up my body, and it is getting severe. i went to see the doctor this year, and i was told the cobb angle is 44, and my option is surgery.

indeed my doctor did not give me much info. i am guessing i have lumbar curve or S? can someone tells me more info.

also i am so afraid of surgery. i would like to try some exercise or other ways to avoid surgery. i heard schroth exercise but i don't have much money to join. i would be grateful if you guy gives me some advice, any suggestions or i am guessing exercise would not help much.

thanks in advance.

Discussion Scoliosis and my dream of doing MMA — what should I consider?

Hi everyone, I'm 21 and I have S-shaped scoliosis. My CT report from 2024 says it's grade 2, but it doesn't mention the exact angle.

I've always wanted to do MMA, and I don't want to give up on that dream without finding out what might be possible for me.

I'm not sure whether surgery would be the right choice or whether I should try to improve my condition without surgery first.

For those who have been through something similar, what would you recommend? Can people with scoliosis train in MMA, wrestling or other contact sports? Are there certain movements or sports I should be careful with?

I'd like to understand my options before making any big decisions. I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks!

Question about Pain Management Should I just quit my brace atp?

Scoliosis is the worst thing that's ever happened to me. I'm one degree under severe scoliosis in an s curve for my thoracic and lumbar spine. I've had a Scolibrace for one year, its extremely overcorrective and there has never been a time where its gotten better. Everyone has told me "it gets better the more you wear it" which might aswell be one of the biggest lies ive ever heard. Its gotten worse, not better. The pain doesnt go away when i take the brace off. Im meant to wear it 23 hrs a day but i've had to stop wearing it at night because it got to the point where I was so sleep deprived I began to hallucinate. I routinely wasn't getting over 2 hours of sleep each night, and whenever I did i would wake up to find my brace thrown acorss the room, as i somehow took it off while sleepwalking- I'm in constant pain every day. i cant focus in school. i cant breathe without a searing burning pain in my sternum. everything hurts and my skin is bruised and red, and one of the nerves in my hip tp my thigh is permanntly numb. despite telling my orthoist all of his, he does nothing and says to keep wearing it or I'll need surgery. Suregery is never happening. i would rather die.

Should i just give up on trreatment altogether and live my life free of endless pain while i can? it will only get worse from heere, and i dont want to sopend my young life in pain, trapped and caged by my own body, i miss sport, pe, hangouts, everyhting. i dont want to live like this.

It's been developing with noticable pain for me since I was around 16, I'm 21 now. It felt like it did at 17 until I turned 20. And now it feels like the worst days I had when I was 20.

1: how fast does the pain progess for you guys?

2: how do people with a more developed curve deal with the pain?

3: how has it effected your working lives?

General Questions Seeking advice

Here’s my story. 31y male diagnosed at 16 after losing 50 pounds. 56 degree thoratic right and 28 degree lumbar left. It has gotten progressively worse for years and my sciatic nerve gets pinched regularly which leaves me walking with a cane for 2months at a time. Im always in pain and have tried everything to feel normal. Therapy, chiropractor, drugs. Its been a rough ride to say the least. What is your opinions on getting a spinal fusion surgery? Is it worth it? Multiple docs have said it is risky. Im tired of being in pain.

Hello everyone, I’ve been going to the gym recently and tracking my back, and I feel like I have scoliosis. I want to know if I do or not before I go to a doctor. I’m 23 years old currently.
