Discussion On going serial killers
Are there any serial killers active right now ? I really haven't heard of a mainstream killer since the " BeltWay Sniper " . I know there are tons of documentaries of newer cases , but no one has really got the spotlight like Bundy or Denise Rader ( B.T.K ) .

There's that mess happening in Philly right now. Think this sub has a master post for that one?

Yeah, the Horsches probably killed a few dozen women at least and law enforcement’s only just beginning to uncover all that they did.

There’s one active in Lansing, MI right now. Surprised you haven’t heard of that case because it’s made national news.

u/Wolfpackat2017 2d ago
I haven’t either. Any links?

Law enforcement even said they suspect it to be a serial killer. Very sad for the victims. One arrest for one murder but they don’t know if that person killed the others too.

I have several family members that live in Lansing

I live in Lansing as well!! These past few months since it’s broken into the mainstream have been truly heartbreaking. Shit like this makes you look at your own city differently. Not so much in a negative or positive light, but it makes you so much more skeptical of everywhere you go.
“Could this person in the booth behind me be him? Not sure.” Etc…. Such a horrible situation.

People in Australia think there is one currently around Bryon Bay but the police won’t acknowledge it. I am unsure as I don’t know too much about it but they think about 60 or so people. It has been spoken about in Parliament.

Some of these are likely victims of domestic violence that police just completely neglected. There is a mention of this in the Bronwyn podcast by Hedly Thomas.

Little Rock Slasher back in ‘21, I think. He’s still at large. Very recently, suspected serial killer in Michigan (I believe) killing homeless people. Those are the American ones I know of, there are more internationally

u/Euphoric-Leg4874 2d ago
Can’t believe they still haven’t caught the Little Rock guy. I know the surveillance of him isn’t very clear but you’d still hope someone out there might recognize him.

Yes and the Michigan one is targeted Caucasian homeless males. It’s terrible

There is an active serial killer in South Africa.

Don’t think he has been caught yet.

I remember reading about some of these cases and it's crazy to me how many of them happened in the same area but no one has been caught yet

I'm pretty sure there is more than 1 serial killer active in SA

There’s a suspected serial killer in Lansing, MI right now - looks like they’re preying on the homeless.

u/Jdghgh 2d ago
There are likely a great number of active serial killers. Dozens at least. If you consider how many unsolved homicides occur each year and the number of years many killers wait between kills, the true number could be considerably higher.
My suspicion is that new serial killers are emerging at a precipitously shrinking rate due to the effects of modernity, at least in wealthy nations.
10
u/Jdghgh 2d ago
Apart from the definition of ‘serial’ being two or three homicides, the real variable here is what is considered ‘active.’ Some killers go many years between murders. Others desist and wouldn’t be considered active, though they could still be alive and capable of homicide.

I live in Houston and we definitely have an active one here. I base this on the fact HPD completely denies that there is an active serial killer.

The book 'The Long Haul' states that there are at least three serial killers currently operating along America's highways.
There's also the Lansing River Trail killer in Michigan.

u/Hedgewizard1958 2d ago
Several years ago, a Chicago PD spokesperson said that they'd identified the #3 pattern killer in a particular neighborhood. That implied that there were at least 3 serial killers in that neighborhood alone. I'm pretty sure there are a good number active, just that no one is talking about it.

Not sure if the local police and government would confirm any possible serial killers in certain areas because they don't want to freak out the public

u/UnusualAbalone3453 3d ago
the serial killer in the chillicothe, ohio area is still tbd and semi recently went “inactive” (this is speculative, but no other murders have been directly linked since they went into hiding…)

We had a serial killer in Philadelphia back in 2021. The guy was named Keith Gibson. He killed at least 7 people in Delaware and Philadelphia, including his mom.
DShawn Crawford was a budding serial killer who killed 2 in Philadelphia. There was another guy who killed 4 people, but he didn’t scream “serial killer.” He later escaped jail and I would be damned if I could remember his name.
I’ve been obsessed with the Frankford Slasher for close to 40 years. My neighbor was the third victim of him. This went on when Philadelphia had three active serial killers in 1985-1990. The suburbs were active in the 1990s. They had two separate serial killers. Both were active in Bucks/Montgomery Counties.

RC Horsch, the sadomasochist photographer who lived in the “Philly House of Horrors,” also lived previously in Bucks County. Having only been to that area, I can attest to how creepy it is.

These cases were in Bensalem and Huntington Valley, I think. The Tinicum Murders of the 1970s were in Delaware County, although they weren’t committed by serial killers.
Chalfont was weirder without RC. He got the house in Philly by his aunt who died.

Highway Of Tears. Canada.
Ongoing since the 1970s, most recent presumed victim was in 2023. There have been many gaps in the killings through the years, this may just be another pause. Total victim count could be 80 or more, but it's hard to be definitive with this one...it's possible that not all of the victims are related crimes.
I think Mexico has a similar ongoing case as well.

i came here to comment this! very sad. i believe a lot of the victims are indigenous women.

I feel like our generation of serial killers are also just school shooters

Israel Keyes and LISK might be the most notable ones in recent memory. Currently active ones? It’s all speculation. Remember the Smiley Face Killer theory? I know they are currently investigating the possibility of a SK responsible for deaths along a walking trail in Lansing, MI.

Low effort posts generate little to no meaningful discussion. Examples of low-effort posts include basic queries that can be answered from a simple google search or generic questions with no context.
Low effort commenting includes responding with emoji(s), one word, or a short phrase that doesn't add to discussion (OMG, Wow, So evil, POS, That's horrible, Heartbreaking, RIP, etc.). Two in my area:
In Willowbrook, California (near Compton) several people were killed in or near the same homeless camp and police have publicly stated there may be a connection. Last murder was early this year. One victim was former professional football player Kevin Johnson. The way cops and media work around here, these murders likely would get little to no press if not for the high-profile victim.
San Bernardino, California: a few years beck there were several random shootings attributed to a gang of serial killers. Whether these killers are actually members of a criminal street gang is unknown as they have not been apprehended.

Just Want to say thank you for all the resources and responses. I REALLY think maybe we have alot of homeless deaths all around the country. Someone should make a sub and let's investigate

Hello! We have one here in Lansing, MI right now. It’s actually super, super saddening and heartbreaking. My heart aches for our homeless community and I hope others will continue their activism for our local unhoused community.
A lot of this internet/mainstream shit doesn’t seem real/gets romanticized until it hits super close to home. We are all demanding an answer on a perp soon. I can’t live peacefully, despite me being grateful for housing. Ugh, what a shitty situation.

There’s probably a ton amongst the homeless and low income neighborhoods due to lack of care for the folks in those in communities.
2
u/Mitchford 21h ago
There is lots of care in those communities there has just been an increase in volume due to opioids but that part is turning
1
u/jokerazazellucifer 1d ago
I agree with this . A lot of people go missing in the homeless community. All the normal people care about is getting them out of the town or city .

Posts about writing to or interacting with serial killers are not allowed.
Personal anecdotes are impossible to verify and are thus not permitted.

There's been nothing confirmed yet as far as official connections, but here in Albany Ga we've had two bodies that have been discovered after being set on fire behind abandoned buildings this year. So on the one hand, a little worrisome. But on the other hand, the true crime fan in me is a little excited.

Surely you must’ve heard of the “Long Island serial killer” who got arrested in 2023.
